Gold Cup 2027

I've never made a full book but like you, I do partial books on certain races but also try to maximise profit on those races only rather than dabble in other races. For example, my main race this year will be the Champion Chase and I've been chipping away at IET, KDB and Kargese since this years festival finished. I'm not interested in anything else and looking for a 40pt profit(with target for whole festival being 100pts).
Funnily enough, the only times I've ever had a full book is in the Arc! Was chipping away at Daryz after last year's Arc so found myself in a very decent position on him so decided to cover a few dangers and then just ended up covering everything else on the day.
I reckon you'll be onto a winner with one of those 3. Cant see beyond them also.

@ Lobos I can tell you with absolute certainty none of those three are winning the Gold Cup....;););)

As someone who doesn't make his own book, I think that the key error made by those who do is that they feel compelled to make a book on every race. Sometimes it's simply not worth it. If he stays sound, Gaelic Warrior wins, simple as that.
Different strokes for different folks! Like a few on here, I am a partial book builder, where I may have anywhere from 3-8 horses backed for one race, depending on who makes it and who doesn't. However, I would always look to have cover against an 'unbeatable' horse as you never know what can happen in the course of the season. This year I think Lossiemouth and Gaelic Warrior are the prime examples. Obviously we have had the discussions on the chances of a horse making it to the Festival as to not. However, I would say there is more chance one of the pair doesn't make it, than both to make it to the Festival. That means there is at least one good potential betting opportunity as the market collapses if they are ruled out. I do try and get the strong favourites covered in multiples (Usually Free Bet doubles and trebles) in the hope I get the right ones there. However, I would rather have small stakes at bigger prices in the hope they can step up for the Championship races, yet interestingly, I tend to hold back as much as possible (FOMO) when it comes to the juvenile and novice races. I think that is because I can envision the Championship horse whereas a novice is largely on hype and you have no idea what trip will suit.

Yeah, using shorties in roll ups/multis and having singles on the value horses makes sense at this stage, of course if a fit Lossie arrives in the form of her life I’ll happily get stuck in on the day…

….Caldwell Potter;

‘He went to Newbury at the end of last October for their public gallops morning as part of his preparation for a return in the Betfair and worked fine but when we checked him in the evening, we discovered he had done some damage to his off-fore tendon. We knew immediately he wouldn’t be going anywhere for 12 months but he was scanned in July, and everything is A1. He will be back in full training in mid-autumn and could possibly run around Christmas. We haven’t decided where he will start off but idea is to run in the Cotswold Chase at the end of January and then the Gold Cup. It’s just fantastic to have him back with us.’

I really fancied him last season as a Gold Cup horse. Hopefully he'll come back as good as new. Exciting horse.

….Jango;

‘He won the Arkle two seasons ago over two miles, but we knew he wanted further and he turned out to be one of our stars again. He won the Ladbrokes 1965 Chase at Ascot over two miles and five and then went to Kempton for the King George and in a nail-biting finish he was beaten less than a length into fourth. We went straight to the Cheltenham Gold Cup after that, and he ran another cracking race to finish second to Gaelic Warrior and then ended the season with an easy success in the Bowl Chase. Let’s hope we can see more of the same this season, but he won’t be ready in time for the King George and the long-term aim is another crack at the Gold Cup. He has given us an immense amount of excitement, and I hope he will continue to do so for his owner Tony Barney.’

Had a nibble on Affordale Fury in this today at 100/1. It was no fluke how he destroyed a star studded field last Christmas. Granted, the ones chasing him weren't fully wound up and Affordale Fury was probably in peak condition but with that form in the book, Noel Meade will surely have to prioritise this race now. He is not an absolute 'no-hoper' at 100/1 in relation to others at that price and a good few shorter. Squad filler.

Forgot all about him Yosser, backed him last year, and obviously didn’t make it. Definitely no 100/1 ew shot if everything falls into place.

He was one of my first bets in the race, 100/1 plays 10/1 a place and you'll do well to find a better value across the whoel festival. Cheltenham form and I've no concerns over his staying ability up the hill. As long as he gets there he should be a live one in what is potentially a weak race outside of GW.

20/1 a place isn't it?

I think they set his season up without the Gold Cup in mind but he proved he can serve it up to them at least. I won't take the fitness difference for granted but he ran really well and won the top Grade 1 chase behind the Gold Cup

I assume HF is taking in to account you have to place two bets to get the EW odds so £10 EW costs you £20 and he places at 100/1 you get a return of £210 divided by your original £20 stake equals 10/1. I think.

Think HF just means return for place is same as backing a 10/1 winner in view of the losing win stake
