Arkle 2019

Bit of a worry that Draconien hasn't ran on good ground as of yet, not sure if thats just the way last season panned out or was by design.

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure he'll run faster on it.

Added 2 points on Claimtakinforgan at 33s on 365, a price that just felt too high to me. Nicky's video today suggests he isn't too keen on anything but the Arkle for him and I was a fan of his last year just think he needs better ground, so be interesting to see him on that over fences today!

Did nothing wrong there, slight pitch on landing at the last seemed to be the only error but that may have been good for him. Doesn’t have me racing to back him but would be happy enough if I had the ticket

Reminded me a lot of the River Wylde last year in the same race. It was good but not great.

However, 33-1 for the Arkle is very fair considering what NH had to say today in his blog. And considering you may only get 4/5 runners again come March.

Likewise after watching Nicky earlier got on the 33s. As others have said, with a small field potentially seemed a good price with a named target. Hopefully he comes on after today and sticks to the 2m.

Do we think this years Arkle could actually attract a decent field? I know it's perceived wisdom that only 5 horses turn up but unless a superstar comes out the woodwork it looks pretty open (and therefore winnable) to me

I think this may be the season we see more than the usual 5 or 6 runners. It does look wide open, for now, though we have yet to see plenty of horses still jump a fence, including current market leader, Kalashnikov.

With Draconien, initially after Punchestown I thought I'm going to stick hurdling, but when I saw how much he matured over the summer I said, 'this fellow is a chaser,'. We schooled him over fences the other day; he's very, very good, so I'm going to go chasing with him.

Draconien looks like he could be in the Footpad league. It's a big league to be in, but that is the league we are aspiring to be in at this stage of the season with him, though I don't think he can run as often. He'll have a much tighter schedule

Thanks for that Marty.
I've got plenty on him now after some initial 'any race' bets.
I love the fact he's impressed schooling. He did still win his grade 1 hurdle which I know people have knocked but it's not as important as the step forward that chasing can bring out!

No problem.

Given in and backed Draconien Any Race 22/1 but on the assumption it'll be here.

Impossible not to back when he's that kind of price having seen those quotes from Mullins. It must have been some piece of schooling recently to be getting these sort of comments. Still really like the profile of Cilaos Emery for this as well but the praise Mullins is giving to Draconien is telling.

Bring on the Navan entry

I have added him today, Best price is now 25/1 with Sky Bet. Seems a bit of money has come since the weekend.

I agree Jono. Willie says a lot, connections say a lot, but comments like that aren't worth ignoring, especially at 25/1.

Claimantakinforgan

He was high up in the novice hurdle category last season and was very good over timber but he is one of the obvious ones to take high rank over fences. I think he’s a two miler as he’s very pacey and the novice division is very strong this year over all distances but he’s definitely in the Arkle Chase sphere

That is what NH although the owners maybe prefer the JLT route, who would win that battle?

A tough one Jon. I'd usually say the owners but if, as an owner, you aren't listening to what NJH says then you really should have your horses elsewhere. He is very rarely wrong with his placing of horses, in fact, I can't think of an occasion when he has clearly put one in the wrong race at a Cheltenham festival.

Archie may be able to help??

Any idea when entries for Sunday's navan card will be out?
