New-look bet365 Festival this year

The bet365 Festival has been reduced to two days from this year, taking place on Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26. Over £600,000 in prize money will be on offer, with the 60th running of the Grade Three Hennessy Gold Cup on Saturday, November 26, the highlight.

The feature race on Friday, November 25 is now the £50,000 Grade Two bet365 Long Distance Hurdle over three miles, won last year by Thistlecrack, who became the seventh winner of this race in the last 11 years to go on victory in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham. Thistlecrack is now ante-post favourite for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, 2017.

The bet365 Long Distance Hurdle sits alongside the £50,000 bet365 Handicap Chase over two miles and four furlongs on a card worth £190,000.

Hennessy Gold Cup Day on Saturday, November 26, now includes the Grade Two bet365 Novices’ Chase over almost three miles and the Listed bet365 Intermediate Hurdle over two miles and half a furlong.

Andy Clifton, Head of Communications at Newbury Racecourse, said: “We’re very excited about our new- look Jump season.

“We started earlier on November 3 and, at the end of November, all roads lead to the bet365 Festival featuring the 60th Hennessy Gold Cup, worth £200,000.

“No race has higher advertised prize money than this historic contest until the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham the following March and with a top-class supporting card on the Friday, including the bet365 Long Distance Hurdle which has been moved from the Saturday, the bet365 Festival looks as strong a two- day Jump racing meeting as you will find outside the spring festivals.”

Hennessy Gold Cup Facts & Figures
Background information
First run at Cheltenham in 1957, the Hennessy Gold Cup was transferred to Newbury three years later and has established itself as one of the most prestigious races in Jump racing.

The three and a quarter mile handicap chase boasts a rich history with greats such as Arkle, Mill House, One Man, Denman and Many Clouds all having taken the spoils during their illustrious careers.

Hennessy has been associated with the race since its inception, making the Hennessy Gold Cup the longest running commercial sponsorship in British racing. The 2016 running will be the 60h Hennessy Gold Cup/

Multiple winners
There have been three dual winners of the Hennessy Gold Cup – Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Arkle (1964 & 1965) and Denman (2007 & 2009).

Arkle narrowly failed in his bid for a famous hat-trick when going down by a half-length to 25/1 shot Stalbridge Colonist, to whom he was conceding 35lb, in 1966.

Denman attempted the hat-trick in 2010, coming home third under top-weight.

Most successful owner
Peggy Hennessy (Mandarin 1957 & 1961), Anne Duchess of Westminster (Arkle 1964 & 1965), Trevor Hemmings (Trabolgan 2005 & Many Clouds 2014) and Paul Barber/Maggie Findlay (Denman 2007 & 2009) are the most successful owners with two wins apiece.

Most successful trainer
The late Fulke Walwyn made the Hennessy his own, with seven victories between 1957 and 1981. They came courtesy of Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981).

Among the current trainers, Nicky Henderson (2005 Trabolgan, 2012 Bobs Worth & 2013 Triolo D’Alene) and Paul Nicholls (2003 Strong Flow, 2007 & 2009 Denman) are the most successful with three wins apiece.

Three female trainers have won the Hennessy Gold Cup – Jenny Pitman with Burrough Hill Lad in 1984, Venetia Williams with Teeton Mill in 1998 and Lavinia Taylor with Gingembre in 2002.

Most successful jockey
Willie Robinson has been the winning-most jockey, with three wins aboard Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968).

The three most successful current riders are Timmy Murphy, Barry Geraghty and Ruby Walsh with two victories each.

John Lawrence (Lord Oaksey) has been the only amateur rider to win the Hennessy, having teamed up with Taxidermist to score by a short-head in 1958. He also bred and part-owned Caruthers (half-brother to 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Coneygree) who was victorious in 2011.

Age
The breakdown of winners by age is as follows: 6yo – 11
7yo – 24
8yo – 11
9yo – 10
10yo – 2
11yo – 1

Greys
Six greys have won the Hennessy – Stalbridge Colonist (1966), One Man (1994), Suny Bay (1997), Teeton Mill (1998), What’s Up Boys (2001) and Smad Place (2015).

Field size
The biggest field came in 1962 when 27 runners faced the starter, while the smallest saw Stalbridge Colonist beat five rivals in 1966. The current safety limit is 24.

Betting
The longest priced winner of the Hennessy was Sibton Abbey, a 40/1 outsider in 1992, while the shortest- priced was Arkle who justified odds of 1/6 in 1965.

In the 59 runnings of the Hennessy, 16 favourites have obliged at a strike rate of 27.1 per cent.

Weights
A total of 30 winners have carried 11st or more to victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup, with the top-weight being defied eight times.

Those to carry top-weight are as follows: Mill House (1963), Arkle (1964 & 1965), Diamond Edge (1981), Burrough Hill Lad (1984), Trabolgan (2005) and Denman (2007 & 2009).

Ten winners have carried bottom weight of 10st, most recently Diamond Harry in 2010.

Winning margins
15 lengths is the longest winning margin - Knucklecracker 1960, Arkle 1965, Spanish Steps 1969 & Teeton Mill 1998

A short-head is the narrowest winning margin witnessed, when Red Candle got the better of Red Rum in 1973.

Did you know?
The Willie Mullins-trained Be My Royal was first past the post in 2002 but was subsequently disqualified after testing positive for a banned substance.

Four horses have captured the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season - Arkle, Bregawn, Denman and Bobs Worth.

Many Clouds is the only horse to have won both the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Grand National at Aintree.

Hennessy Gold Cup – 10 of the best winners
MANDARIN (1957 & 1961)
Mandarin was successful in the first Hennessy Gold Cup at Cheltenham in 1957, when he defeated the Gold Cup winner Linwell. Mandarin was also victorious when the contest switched to Newbury, following up with a second victory in 1961 and thereby providing trainer Fulke Walwyn with the first two of his record seven winners. Following the 1961 triumph, Mandarin went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and France’s greatest Jump race, the Grand Steeplechase de Paris. The small but admirably tough horse was owned by Peggy Hennessy, from the family of the sponsors.

MILL HOUSE (1963)
Winner of one of the most famous renewals, Mill House scored as a six-year-old under 12 stone in 1963 to become Fulke Walwyn’s fourth Hennessy scorer. He had won the previous season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup and followed up his Newbury victory by taking Kempton’s King George VI Chase. This was the only race in which Mill House beat Arkle (11st 9lb), who finished third after slipping badly three fences from home.

ARKLE (1964 & 1965)
Arkle’s two Hennessy Gold Cup victories are the greatest seen in the race’s history. “Himself” won under 12st 7lb in both years, defeating Ferry Boat by 10 lengths in 1964 and Freddie by 15 lengths in 1965. The greatest chaser of all- time, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup thrice, attempted a hat-trick in the 1966 Hennessy Gold Cup. Making his seasonal debut, he went down by half a length to the very useful Stalbridge Colonist, who was in receipt of 35lb.

BREGAWN (1982)
Bregawn gave trainer Michael Dickinson a Hennessy Gold Cup victory when victorious under Graham Bradley in 1982. Carrying 11st 10lb, he got up to beat stable companion Captain John by three lengths. Bregawn went on to lead home the trainer’s “Famous Five” in the 1983 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

BURROUGH HILL LAD (1984)
The great Burrough Hill Lad made light of his 12st burden when taking the 1984 Hennessy Gold Cup by four lengths under John Francome, justifying 100/30 favouritism. Trainer Jenny Pitman’s best-ever horse had won the Cheltenham Gold Cup the previous season and followed up his Hennessy Gold Cup win by taking the King George at Kempton Park.

ONE MAN (1994)
One Man carried the minimum of 10st to victory in 1994 when an unexposed six-year-old. The grey, trained by the late Gordon Richards, became one of the most popular chasers of the 1990s, taking the King George VI Chase twice before dropping back to two miles for a famous victory in the 1998 Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

TEETON MILL (1998)
The horse that put trainer Venetia Williams on the map, the grey Teeton Mill rose from the hunter chase ranks to win the 1998 Hennessy Gold Cup impressively 15 lengths under Norman Williamson. He was subsequently successful in Grade One company in the King George at Kempton Park and the Ascot Chase.

DENMAN (2007 & 2009)
The best winner of the current century, Denman twice defied top-weight when victorious in 2007 and 2009. He followed up his 2007 win by defeating stable mate Kauto Star in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup and was also runner-up in the Gold Cup in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The Paul Nicholls-trained chaser made a gallant attempt to win a third Hennessy when third under top-weight in 2010.

BOBS WORTH (2012)
Became the latest of four horses to win the Hennessy Gold Cup and Cheltenham Gold in the same season when successful in 2012 for trainer Nicky Henderson. Bobs Worth went straight to Cheltenham following his impressive Newbury win over Tidal Bay. He also scored at the highest level in Ireland in the 2013 Lexus Chase at Leopardstown.

MANY CLOUDS (2014)
Although a number of Grand National winners have run in the Hennessy Gold Cup, most notably Red Rum who was runner-up to Red Candle at Newbury in 1973, no horse had managed to win both until Many Clouds in 2014/2015. Oliver Sherwood’s charge, a hugely popular local winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup, was one of the best recent victors of the Grand National when defying 11st 9lb at Aintree four months later, with Leighton Aspell in the saddle both times.

bet365 Long Distance Hurdle (Grade Two)
The bet365 Long Distance Hurdle usually goes the way of the top staying hurdler in training. Record-breaking stayer Big Buck’s reeled off four successive victories at Newbury during a four-year winning streak that spanned 18 races, including an unprecedented four World Hurdles.

Inglis Drever also made the race his own between 2005 and 2007. He captured his first World Hurdle in 2005 and recovered from a career-threatening injury to regain the crown in 2007 and 2008.

French raider Baracouda (2003 & 2004) was a regular on these shores for Francois Doumen. He won 14 of his 19 starts in Britain, notably a record four Long Walk Hurdles and two World Hurdles.

Thistlecrack was imperious last season. A six-length victory at Newbury on his comeback was followed by a string of facile displays, culminating with totally dominant victories in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham and Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree.

Fuller’s London Pride Novices’ Chase (Grade Two)
Three subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winners – Denman, Bobs Worth and Coneygree – have won the Fuller’s London Pride Novices’ Chase since the turn of the century.

Denman took the two and a half mile contest in 2006 during an unbeaten novice campaign, and began the following season with victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup under top-weight. Trained by Paul Nicholls, he galloped stablemate Kauto Star into submission in a memorable 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup, after which he recovered from a heart problem to win a second Hennessy Gold Cup in 2009.

Bobs Worth defeated the very talented Cue Card by a short-head in the 2011 Fuller’s London Price Novices’ Chase. Like Denman, Bobs Worth captured the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, plus the following season’s Hennessy Gold Cup and Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Coneygree became the first novice since Captain Christy (1974) to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2015. He debuted over fences in the 2014 Fuller’s London Pride Novices’ Chase and warmed up for Cheltenham with a seven-length demolition of his rivals in the G2 Denman Chase back at Newbury the following February

bet365 Novices’ Chase (Grade Two)
The bet365 Novices’ Chase has proved a reliable source of high-class staying chasers. Last year’s winner Native River ended the season with a front-running victory in the G1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree’s Grand National festival. He is a leading contender with this year’s Hennessy Gold Cup.

Run over just short of three miles, the bet365 Novices’ Chase is a good trial for the G1 Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day. Darkness (2005), Joe Lively (2007) and Grands Crus (2011) have all completed the double in recent years, while several other Newbury winners have placed.

Harry Topper (2012) outstayed subsequent Cheltenham Festival hero Benefficient at Newbury and the following season captured a pair of G2 contests, the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby and Denman Chase back at Newbury.

bet365 Intermediate Handicap Hurdle (limited handicap 0-155) (Listed)
The bet365 Intermediate Limited Handicap Hurdle has been used as a springboard by some great hurdlers. Comedy Of Errors opened his account at Newbury in 1972 on his way to the first of two Champion Hurdle triumphs in 1973. He was runner-up to that season’s bet365 Intermediate victor Lanzarote in the 1974 Champion Hurdle but returned to Cheltenham the following year to regain the title, making him the first horse to do so.

Legendary Flat trainer Sir Michael Stoute was victorious in 1988 with Triumph Hurdle hero Kribensis. Carrying the famous colours of Sheikh Mohammed, Kribensis went unbeaten through the 1989/90 season annexing the Fighting Fifth Hurdle, Christmas Hurdle and Champion Hurdle. He remains the only horse to win those three races in the same season.

Rock On Ruby completed the bet365 Intermediate Limited handicap Hurdle-Champion Hurdle double in 2011/12. He turned over a top-class field at Cheltenham that included former champions Hurricane Fly and Binocular.

Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase
The first Sir Peter O’Sullevan memorial race took place on Hennessy Gold Cup Day at the bet365 Festival last year. The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase, worth £40,000 and run over two miles, six and a half furlongs, was won by the Warren Greatrex- trained Aloomomo, with Gavin Sheehan in the saddle.

The final commentary of Sir Peter’s long and illustrious broadcasting career was on the Hennessy Gold Cup of 1997, won by Suny Bay. O’Sullevan commentated on 40 of the first 41 runnings of the great race; the only one he missed was in 1983 when covering the Japan Cup in Tokyo. The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase has been backed by the friends of Sir Peter.

Great info OV, will take some time out later to digest...

I'm being drawn to Un Temps Pour Tout in a big way....

ew good thing ? Tom Scu positive...

You've got to respect the race and respect the others but we certainly think Un Temps Pour Tout can do it," said Scudamore.

"He's straightforward, has jumped around Newbury before, handles big fields, and is very versatile regarding the ground, so he hasn't got many question marks."

A Cheltenham Festival winner last season, Un Temps Pour Tout looked to have the Newbury highlight on his radar when reverting to hurdles for his seasonal reappearance at Aintree 18 days ago when he left fellow Hennessy leading hopeful Vyta Du Roc in his wake as he highlighted his wellbeing with an all-the-way success.

Scudamore added: "On a strict line of form we've got it to do to try and turn it around with Native River, but we'll give it another go. I still think Un Temps Pour Tout has got improvement in him, and I was pleased with him at Aintree last time."

Good job OV, im interested in Vicente if he turns up, he has beaten vyta du rock and un temps pour tout , distance no worries but may prefer better ground but will go on soft and I would imagine harry Cobden would take the ride takin a few lb off his back. With 3 giggs very doubtful of running and the market changing 25-1 looks decent. Bets so far.
Henri parry Morgan - 20-1 ew
Vicente 25-1 ew

I've got an horrific record in this race but every year I think that's about to change !

On strict form UTPT shouldn't finish ahead of Native River but that Tuesday h'cap chase is the most competitive 3m chase on the calendar and he hacked up putting 16l between him and third, and connections believe there's improvement in the horse, plus I can't imagine any of these apart from Saphir Du Rheu was rated higher over hurdles.
Prep run over hurdles (as did Native River) is key for me as a good performance would have burdened the horse with another 7lb.

Strong money for Henry P Morgan yesterday and Blaklion today...

One of two runners for JP McManus and seemingly the second-string based purely on jockey bookings. Caught the eye with a fair fifth in the first-time blinkers at Cheltenham last month and it's no surprise to see the headgear retained. From a handicapping point of view he's only 1lb higher than when a good second to Sausalito Sunrise last November so certainly not out of it and his stamina is assured.

Not the second string - Bazza cant do 10 stone. 50s gone quickly.

Two runners I like tomorrow, the first of which is OUR KAEMPFER who will be looking to get off the mark at the third attempt over fences at Newbury (1.35). , I think this horse can do well over fences but it is interesting that connections have decided to stick to 2m4f for the time being as I think he will improve a lot for going up to 3m. Perhaps the presence of a certain Thistlecrack in the 3m novice on Saturday discouraged them from going down that route and he will also be given a mark after this, so handicaps will be an option for him. In terms of tomorrow’s race, he could find things tough with both Grade 1 hurdler One Track Mind and the smart Protek Des Flos rated as exciting chasing prospects by connections. We do have both chasing experience and race fitness on our side which should make the difference and he also wears a tongue-tie for the first time, in a bid to eke out further improvement. In truth, I think that handicaps is where this horse’s future lies but this race could be run a bit quicker than his last race which should suit and I think he is worth a small win bet with experience on his side.

Advice

OUR KAEMPFER – 1pt win @ 8/1 (bet365, BetVictor)

THE second runner of the afternoon is one of our newest additions to the list, BEHIND TIME who bids to follow up his Cheltenham success at Newbury tomorrow afternoon (3.20). Harry Fry’s five-year-old is due to go up 13lb in the handicap but with his success having come in a conditional riders’ race, he escapes a penalty in this contest. The step up to 3m should hold no fears for him and he should step forward a good deal from his first run of the season. He takes on some smart rivals including Grade 2 winner El Bandit but Paul Nicholls gelding does concede the best part of two stone to our horse. The runner-up from Cheltenham Solomn Grundy also returns for another crack but it is hard to see him reversing the placings here. All in all this looks a good opportunity for him to win again before his mark goes up and it is hard to see past him tomorrow.

Advice

BEHIND TIME – 2pts win @ 11/10 (Betfair Sportsbook)

Behind Time / Jenkins / One Track Mind / Three Musketeers in trebles and a 4 fold for me tomorrow. A bit of a mugs bet at the prices but really like the first three.

Following Hendo tomorrow.

Following Hendo tomorrow.

Protek des Flos novice chasing, got told at Sandown when he won there he was JPs best chance in Triumph !
They rate him highly, never a fan of 4yo jumping big fences but the French breds are a year ahead of ours so not an issue for them, 3/1 could be a play tomorrow....
