I like all of their eliminators bar Cat 4 and probably 5.

Last year, a wild final round saw Zach Johnson defeat Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman in a three-man playoff to win The Open Championship. Jason Day and Jordan Spieth were just one stroke out of that playoff group.

In trying to find this year's winner, instead of picking one from the entire field, we’re going to find a reason why each golfer cannot win until we're down to one. After correctly picking Dustin Johnson to win the U.S. Open, let's see who "The Eliminator" comes up with for The Open Championship:

Category 1: Experience

Ten of the past 11 winners of The Open Championship had all made at least six prior starts in the event, with the only exception being Louis Oosthuizen in 2010. In fact, nine of those winners had made 10 or more starts. To start, we'll eliminate everybody who hasn’t made six prior British Open starts.

That list includes: Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Danny Willett and Branden Grace from among the top 10 golfers in the world and trims the field down to just 49.

Category 2: Prior Open Success

Of the past 11 winners at The Open Championship, 10 had a finish of sixth or better in a past one. That eliminates 18 of the remaining golfers who have never had a top-six in this event.

Notables among them are Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar, which reduces the field to 31.

Category 3: World Ranking

The past 15 major champions have all entered that event 28th or better in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Of the 31 remaining golfers, that eliminates another 19, including Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els.

Category 4: Recent Major Success

Each of the past three winners of The Open Championship made the cut in each of their previous three majors played.

Applying that rule, nine of the 12 remaining golfers are eliminated, including Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler and Adam Scott.

Category 5: First Time Major Winners

So we’re down to three; Dustin Johnson Louis Oosthuizen and Sergio Garcia. The past three major winners have been first-time major champions, the longest such streak since 2010-12 when there were nine consecutive first-time winners. That stretch included Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen.

From the remaining three, Dustin Johnson and Oosthuizen have won a major, so they’re out.

That leaves Sergio Garcia as the pick to hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday.

I have backed Mickelson - he had decent finish in Scottish Open. I think it fell in DJs lap last time but sometimes these guys can thrive after the monkey is of thir back.

I've backed two so far. Kaymer 50/1 and Mannesero at 200/1, both ew. My last two bets are going to be two of the top 4 in the betting but I'm really struggling to decide which two. At the moment I'm edging towards DJ and Rory but I'm going to wait until the last possible moment before placing my final bets.

My two plays so far have been Lowry 50s and Monty 150s in first round leader market.

I get sucked in to backing far too many for every major and I've found 8 for this week !

Decent hits - DJ, Grace and Fowler
Medium hits - GMac, Kaymar and Lowry
Small hits - Finau and Coetze (both at 600s or bigger)

Have to say I wasn't a fan of Sky winning the broadcasting rights but I've loved watching their previews, analysis and past champions pieces every night, when they commit they really commit.

Breeze looks to be getting up Friday and Sat but with rain around for much of the week I think the track will play easier, buying the number of players under par at 15 is a play I may have.

Good luck all

I have backed Fowler also. He is due one.

I have backed Fowler also. He is due one.

He was awful in Masters and US Open having been so consistent in Majors last few years, he's certainly got the game.
I get the feeling the late starters Thursday will get he better of conditions, Friday looks horrible all day but tomorrow looks to have lighter wind in the afternoon so players heading out at 2pm and after could get lucky, Dustbin, Lefty, Westwood, Kaymar, Garcia, Scott all in that slot....

Added Rory and Day. Also backed Rory to be 1st round leader. I love watching the first two days oh the open, unfortunately i can't get any time off work this year.

Have to agree with Ista - Sky's coverage has been first class, much better than I expected.

Americans burning it up today.

Yep, but not Dustbin ?
Never get better conditions to post a big red number but couldn't break par.
Lefty unbelievable.....

Today will be great viewing. The wind is blowing, a decent round will be 70 I think.

Laid off my Mickleson stake and took some profit - have a felling someone is going to get close this pm.

Stenson looks the only challenger OV, this wind will prevent someone coming from the pack with a 65 I think.
Weather looks fairly consistent over the weekend with no real bias

Lefty and Stenson playing unbelievable today, they could be 10 shots clear of third at the end...

Phenomenal golf. Neither deserve to lose this.

Never seen golf like that, just a ridiculous standard.
Lefty shoots 65 and doesn't get close ?

Managed to get myself stuck on a plane for most of the back 9 :grumpy:

Brillant standard and both seem sound blokes.

I cashed in my lot on Saturday evening for a decent enough return.

Inspired OV, have to say when I saw you post that you'd chopped out I thought to myself I would've rode it, though Lefty was the best player first 2 days and if anything I would have pressed, cashing in then jumping on a plane obviously the way to do it !
