Newbury's Betfair Hurdle attracts great entry ahead of Betfair Super Saturday on February 13

The Betfair Hurdle has attracted a tremendous entry of 75 for its 2016 renewal at Newbury on Saturday, February 13 - Betfair Super Saturday. This is the joint-highest number of entries since 2001 and well up on the 65 received last year.

The Grade Three handicap, run over an extended two miles, is Britain's richest handicap hurdle with £155,000 in prize money and was first staged in 1963.

Britain's champion Jump trainer Paul Nicholls was successful in the 2012 Betfair Hurdle with Zarkandar and has six entries this time around, headed by Betfair's 12/1 favourite Modus. The six-year-old, owned by J P McManus, was twice placed in Grade One bumpers last season and has scored on two of his three starts over hurdles so far, including a novice event at Newbury on November 17.

Nicholls' other entries include Grade One Anniversary Hurdle victor All Yours (16/1)and exciting novice Le Prezien (16/1). Owned by the Million In Mind Partnership, Le Prezien was a hugely-impressive 19-length winner at Doncaster on January 8. Nicholls' remaining entries are Some Plan (20/1), Monsieur Gibraltar (33/1) and Emerging Talent (16/1), an eye-catching scorer at Exeter on New Year's Day.

Lambourn-based Nicky Henderson is the most successful trainer of all-time in the Betfair Hurdle, having landed the valuable prize five times, most recently with My Tent Or Yours in 2013. The Seven Barrows handler has four entries this year, headed by last season's Grade One Triumph Hurdle hero and likely top-weight Peace And Co (14/1 with Betfair). The five-year-old lost his unbeaten record when disappointing in the Grade Two International Hurdle at Cheltenham last month and Henderson recently revealed he is considering whether to keep Peace And Co in conditions' company or go for the Betfair Hurdle. Henderson's other entries are Listed scorer Sign Of A Victory (16/1), Day Of Heaven (20/1), successful in a Grade Two novices' contest at Kempton in February, and Cardinal Walter (20/1), a useful handicapper on the Flat who scored twice over hurdles last season.

Another Lambourn trainer to have tasted Betfair Hurdle success is Oliver Sherwood, who saddled Large Action to take the spoils in 1994. The master of Rhonehurst Stable has one entry this year with Rayvin Black (33/1). The seven-year-old is at home on very soft ground, scoring on his latest start in a two-mile handicap hurdle at Sandown on January 2, a race he was winning for the second year in succession.

Another chance of local success in the Betfair Hurdle comes from Royal Guardsman (33/1), trained at Eastbury by Ali Stronge. The nine-year-old was a game all-the-way winner of a handicap hurdle over just short of two miles and three furlongs at Newbury on Hennessy Gold Cup Day, November 28. This was Royal Guardsman's second Newbury success, as he also landed an extended two-mile handicap hurdle at the course on February 28. He is currently rated 132 - the same rating from which Violet Dancer won the Betfair Hurdle in 2015.

The trainer's husband Sam Stronge commented: "We had to make the decision to enter Royal Guardsman in the Betfair Hurdle and will just play things by ear at the moment, as he will be towards the bottom of the weights off his current rating.

"Obviously, it is some time until the Betfair Hurdle but he does love soft and heavy ground and is a course and distance winner so that is why we decided to give him an entry. As things stand, he would probably take his chance.

"He has an entry at Wetherby this Saturday, but I think it is unlikely he will go there. There is an open handicap at Ascot on January 23 over two miles and three furlongs, which he also has an entry for. There are not a huge amount of options between now and Newbury.

"When you look at the last couple of years, he should get in the race and hopefully the ground should suit.

"I am not quite sure why, but when the ground is on the soft side it seems to suit front runners at Newbury, as happened in this race last year with Violet Dancer."

Sparsholt-based Harry Whittington has enjoyed a superb season so far, with a strike rate of 30% and has an interesting contender in French import Affaire D'Honneur, (33/1) who finished second on his British debut in a competitive handicap hurdle at Kempton on December 27.

A trainer with a fine record in the Betfair Hurdle is Gary Moore, who has landed the prize three times, most recently with Violet Dancer last year. The Sussex handler has three entries this time - Ubak (20/1), a Grade Two scorer at Aintree in 2013, useful mare Flute Bowl (25/1) and novice Clayton (66/1).

There is a significant Irish-trained entry of 23 for the 2016 Betfair Hurdle, way up on the 11 such entries received in 2015. Among this powerful contingent are 14 contenders from Ireland's champion Jump trainer Willie Mullins, headed by Kakir (14/1), a very smart juvenile last season who has not been seen out since disappointing in the Triumph Hurdle in March. Mullins' entries also include smart French import Bamako Moriviere (16/1), Ladbroke Hurdle third Renneti (16/1) and the Grade One-winning mare Petite Parisienne (20/1).

Also featuring among the Irish-trained entries are De Name Escapes Me (16/1, Noel Meade), a very easy winner last time out at Fairyhouse, and Desoto County (16/1, Gordon Elliott), who made a winning debut for his current trainer at Thurles last month.

Betfair spokesman Barry Orr commented today: "As you would expect for the prize money on offer, it is an extremely strong list of entries for the Betfair Hurdle.

"With Paul Nicholls, Willie Mullins and Nicky Henderson-trained horses heading the market, it is a competitive affair and 12/1 the field is indicative of that."

Weights for the Betfair Hurdle will be revealed on Wednesday, January 20. The maximum field size for the race is 24.

The Betfair Hurdle is the highlight of a fabulous seven-race programme at Newbury on Betfair Super Saturday, February 13, which also features the £50,000 Grade Two Betfair Denman Chase, won by subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Coneygree in 2015, and the £50,000 Grade Two Betfair Exchange Chase.

Modus cut to 10/1 already.

Owner Terry Warner admits he may be "clutching at straws" by expecting Sternrubin to win the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury on February 13.

The Philip Hobbs-trained novice was a bit of a tearaway last season but has calmed down to such an extent that he won the Gerry Feilden at Newbury and dead-heated for the Ladbroke in his last two races.

Having set a ferocious gallop in the Ladbroke at Ascot, he was headed close home by Jolly's Cracked It, only to battle back to share first place.

"There's not much more for him to run in, to be honest," said Warner.

"We always thought that he was a nice horse, but if I told you I thought he'd win a Ladbroke at the start of the season I'd be lying.

"He was a bit of a head-case last season, but has calmed down now and Philip has done a good job with him - it was great to see him battle back at Ascot.

"The intention is to run at Newbury and then go to Cheltenham, but for what, I'm not sure.

"He's still a novice, don't forget, so the Supreme could be an option if he runs well in the Betfair.

"He'll also be in the County Hurdle, but to win two major handicaps is very hard.

"I think he'll run well at Newbury as he's still progressing, but it might be clutching at straws expecting him to win another big one.

"His transformation has been incredible."

Modus among 51 going forward for Betfair Hurdle at Newbury on Betfair Super Saturday

Modus (trained by Paul Nicholls and 7/1 favourite with Betfair) leads 51 horses going forward for the £155,000 Betfair Hurdle, Britain's richest handicap hurdle, which takes place at Newbury on Betfair Super Saturday, February 13.

The J P McManus-owned six-year-old, runner-up in the Grade One Weatherbys Champion Bumper at last year's Cheltenham Festival, has won two of his three starts over hurdles this season, including in a novice event over the course and distance on November 26, when he was a neck too strong for Charmix (11st, Harry Fry).

Modus is currently scheduled to carry 10st 8lb in the Betfair Hurdle. Charmix boosted the form by winning another Newbury race, the British Stallion Studs EBF "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle, easily by 17 lengths on December 16.

Nicholls, the champion Jump trainer, who landed the Betfair Hurdle with Zarkandar in 2012, has also left in All Yours (11st 2lb, 16/1), a Grade One scorer at Aintree in 2015 and Some Plan (11st, 20/1), who was fourth in a competitive handicap hurdle at Ascot shortly before Christmas.

An interesting contender is Pearl Castle (10st 9lb, Karl Burke, 25/1). The six-year-old was last seen out on the Flat at Lingfield Park on Saturday, January 22, when he was a staying-on fifth, beaten two lengths, in a competitive conditions race over two miles on Polytrack. The son of Montjeu was a very useful juvenile hurdler two seasons ago when trained by John Quinn and shaped with promise on his most recent start over hurdles when chasing home the progressive Aristo Du Plessis at Musselburgh on New Year's Day.

Burke, who is based at the historic Spigot Lodge in North Yorkshire, said: "Pearl Castle is definitely under consideration for the Betfair Hurdle. He will either go to Newbury or to the Musselburgh County Hurdle which is four or five days before. A lot will depend on the ground as he doesn't want it too soft.

"He is in good order and ran very well at Lingfield on Saturday. If the ground came up decent, I think we would probably look at going for the Betfair Hurdle because of the money on offer at Newbury.

"He is a horse with a lot of ability. He probably saves a bit for himself - he is by Montjeu and they can do that. The only run over hurdles he has had since joined us was at Musselburgh on New Year's Day behind a horse who is a big improver.

"I think he can be competitive in a race like the Betfair Hurdle, although there are obviously some very good horses in there. He has a high cruising speed, stays well and 10st 9lb is a good sort of weight.

"He jumps well enough, but his jumping is probably something which might let him down in a big handicap with all the hustle and bustle. Before he joined us, he did hit a couple of hurdles which may have dented his confidence a bit, but is a horse with plenty of ability when everything goes his way."

The weights are now headed by Sempre Medici (11st 12lb, Willie Mullins, 16/1) following the defection of original top-weight Peace And Co. Mullins, Ireland's champion Jump trainer, still has nine entries remaining including Kalkir (11st 2lb, 14/1), who ran well on his seasonal reappearance to finish runner-up in a valuable handicap hurdle at Leopardstown on January 17.

Of the remaining entries, a total of 14 are trained in Ireland including Desoto County (10st 6lb, Gordon Elliott, 12/1), who was a staying-on third in the same Leopardstown contest.

No trainer can boast a better record in the Betfair Hurdle than Lambourn-based Nicky Henderson, who has won the very valuable contest five times. The two remaining entries from Seven Barrows are Days Of Heaven (10st 12lb, 20/1), a Grade Two winner last season but a disappointment on his seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham in November and Cardinal Walter (10st 8lb, 20/1), a useful novice last season but not seen out so far in the 2015/16 campaign.

Other leading fancies going forward include the highly-promising novice Affair D'Honneur (10st 1lb, Harry Whittington, 16/1) and Swinton Hurdle victor War Sound (11st 3lb, Philip Hobbs, 8/1), plus Sternrubin (10st 11lb, Philip Hobbs, 16/1) and John Constable (10st 8lb, Evan Williams, 16/1), who filled the first two places in a Listed limited handicap hurdle over the course and distance on November 26.

Betfair spokesman Barry Orr commented today: "Modus continues to head the ante-post betting at 7/1 but War Sound has been the horse punters want to be with in recent days and at 8/1 he is closing in on the Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old year old at the head of the market."

Betfair Hurdle, Betfair bet: 7/1 Modus; 8/1 War Sound; 12/1 Desoto County; 14/1 Kalkir; 16/1 Affaire d'Honneur, All Yours, Charmix, John Constable, Sempre Medici, Starchitect, Sternrubin; 20/1 Agrapart, Buiseness Sivola, Cardinal Walter, Days of Heaven, Dicosimo, Holly Bush Henry, Petite Parisienne, Rayvin Black, Some Plan, Waxies Dargle, Whatsforuwontgobyu, Zarib; 25/1 Aminabad, Cheltenian, Flute Bowl, Francis of Assisi, Ivan Grozny, Mad Jack Mytton, Matorico, Noble Inn, Pearl Castle, Qewy, Winner Massagot; 26/1 Champagne At Tara; 33/1 Baby King, Blazer, Flying Angel, Forest Bihan, Fou Et Sage, Galizzi, Hawk High, Kayf Blanco, Montbazon, Royal Guardsman, Three Kingdoms, Vercingetorix, Whiteout, Zaidiyn; 50/1 Chieftain's Choice; 66/1 Clayton

The next acceptance stage for the Betfair Hurdle is on Monday, February 8, when the entries for the other races on Betfair Super Saturday will be made.

blazer smashed up - could get a run of 10 4 now with a 5lb penalty and only needs 4 to come out.

I like John Constable here, just the three hurdle races and ran well behind Sternrubin in a listed event last time out, now has a massive weight pull from that rival and set to carry just 10st 8lb and it's reasonable to expect improvement as he gains more experience.

Used to be easy this, just Dutch the Pipe runners, more difficult now

Heavy ground a negative ?

Mayo put him up on the whispers thread at 33s http://www.fatjockey.com/forum/showthread.php?5932-Whispers-etc so good luck to you both.

I like Zarib e/w at 20s - 5 places with Betfair. Well backed for the Ladbrokes last time out and big pull in the weights with the likes of Sternrubin. Also like he's a course winner and some good form in the book as a novice last year. Should get in without needing some not to run & the right end of the weights. Think it's worth a few quid e/w at the price - just wish Skelton's we're winning as regularly as they were at the start of the season - but then it wouldn't be 20s - so you can't have it all !

Big ask for Blazer to turn around in 6 days but He will probably get put up 10 lbs or more for the win on Sunday so they might be tempted. Another race in him regardless.

Harry Wittingtons horse and Modus are my two main plays.

Ista welcome on board - I have him in a bundle on accas at 33s.

I also have a lot of Modus supreme bets ( with and without min) so if he wins that will suit me just fine. Nicholls horses seem to be running a bit better but still worried they will save Modus for Imperial Cup/ County and go with Blazer as their main dart in this.

John Constable an entire horse :D

John Constable is that rarest of beasts: an entire running over jumps. He’s very well bred (brother to Leading Light) and showed useful form on the Flat for Aidan O’Brien before joining Evan Williams, for whom he’s won two of his three starts over timber. John Constable improved further when four lengths second to Sternrubin in the Gerry Feilden over C&D in November and meets that rival on 12 lb better terms here; he’s one for the shortlist.

Should be John Constable using that smiley face ov.
Have a sneaking fancy for Starchitect in this, won't be watching though coz I'll be on me hols

Taken from RP website:

JP MCMANUS'S two leading fancies for the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury were subject to contrasting vibes on Tuesday, with Barry Geraghty suggesting caution over Blazer but Paul Nicholls enthusing over the chances of Modus.

The duo, along with War Sound, are 6-1 co-favourite for Britain's richest handicap hurdle on Saturday, though Blazer is not yet guaranteed a run.

'A far more competitive race'

Geraghty, who rode the Willie Mullins-trained Blazer to win at Leopardstown last Saturday, said in his At The Races blog: "He enjoyed conditions and Blazer won well. It just may not have been that good a race. The form may not be very strong.

"The Betfair Hurdle will obviously be a far more competitive race. If he gets into the race and if he takes his chance, he will be carrying a 5lb penalty in a far more competitive race, so that will obviously be more difficult."

'Well handicapped'

Nicholls, meanwhile, said of Modus: "He was a good bumper horse and we bought him in the summer and sold him to JP.

"He's a much more mature horse and is getting better all the time. We like him a lot and it's good race for a novice in that you might be well handicapped whereas in a year you might not be.

"He's got a lot of ability, but one thing I think is he'll be a lot better on better ground. He can cope with the soft ground. He just lacks a bit of experience, but one thing he does do is jump well."

The champion trainer added: "I think there's a lot of improvement to come from him because he's learning to settle. I'm very happy with him and he's a high-class horse. He's a horse who's going to get two and a half miles in time, but he's not slow. "

Market mover

The main market mover on Tuesday was Richard Johnson's likely mount Sternrubin, who was cut into 10-1 (from 12).

Coral's David Stevens said: "Philip Hobbs is enjoying a great season, and his Sternrubin has been backed to continue his good run this weekend with more big handicap hurdle success."

Sternrubin & Starchitect are the tips of Gary Nutting in his ante-post column - hence the blue with those two.

RECOMMENDED BET (SCALE 1-5 POINTS):
