New Horses for Jumps Season

Three from Tizzards yard

ASKED to nominate three horses to be his leading lights this season, Colin Tizzard named Gentleman Jon and Thistlecrack alongside the obvious choice Cue Card.

Gentleman Jon

The Milborne Port handler said of six-year-old Gentleman Jon: “He had already won a 2m2½f bumper for Jo Hughes at Fontwell in March, 2013, before we bought him at Cheltenham Sales. “He is a class horse and a big chap who will be a better chaser than a hurdler. When he won his maiden hurdle at Wincanton this year he looked the business and stayed on so well.

“We then went to Aintree in April for a Grade Two hurdle where he only got tired going to the last – we thought he deserved his run in a championship race for the season. We schooled him in the spring and he jumps correctly – I’m sure we haven’t seen the best of him yet.”

The Beat All gelding runs in the colours of jovial John Romans, a regular Tizzard supporter

Thistlecrack

as are Thistlecrack’s owners John and Heather Snook who have had horses at Venn Farm for a decade.

The six-year-old Kayf Tara gelding impressed when winning a Wincanton bumper at 14-1 in April on his first start for a year. Tizzard said: “Thistlecrack bolted up that day. He’s got a big engine and looks a great prospect. He’ll be back with me when he’s three parts ready and could have another bumper around Christmas before going hurdling.”

Unnamed one

Another Snook youngster to excite the trainer is a three-year-old full brother to Voler La Vedette, the mare who chased home Big Buck’s in the 2012 Ladbrokes World Hurdle.

Tizzard said of the unnamed King’s Theatre gelding bought in Ireland: “This is a cracking horse who has done nothing but impress since being broken in. He is very progressive and is moving up the gears towards running in a bumper.”

This is one of 16 untried youngster in the yard and though the trainer thinks it invidious to single any one of them out as their progress changes from week to week he did mention Bramble Brook, a four-year-old Kayf Tara gelding purchased at Doncaster and owned by Garth and Anne Broom.

“This is a beautiful, big, strong boy who just feels so right – Nicky Henderson was the underbidder at the sales.”

Venitien De Mai, Moon Racer, Ma Du Fou are 3 that will hopefully pick up prizes this season

I said Graham Wylie had bought a new horse to develop into staying hurdler, it's called Nichols Canyon and is with Willie Mullins, came from John Gosden and had decent form, apologies if the group already knew

Hi Paz and welcome.

Looking forward to West Wizard this time round.

A few pointers made big money

It would be no surprise to see Potters Point end up favourite for the Cheltenham Bumper is the quote I have read so let's see what happens

Alisier D’Irlande made £300,000 and went to Roger Brookhouse which I presume means gone to Pipe.

Adam Du Breteau made £280,000 and Has gone to Jonjo O’Neill. Jeweloftheocean also bought by Jonjo for £175,000 and Champagne Present for £210,000. Also Minella Rocco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVU6uDLsPdA

Potters Point went to Willie Mullins for £260,000.

Birch Hill, was purchased for Nicky Henderson for €160,000.

other buys

110,000gns paid by Donald McCain for Starchitect in July , who was second to subsequent Listed winner Table Rock last time out.

Hi Old Vic, Potters Point may well end up as favourite for the festival bumper by what I've read 😄

Great info paz !

From OJA...

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has done tremendously well with his recruits from across the Channel with household names Big Buck’s, Kauto Star and Master Minded winning 34 Grade 1 races between them.

LE MERCUREY has a long way to go before he can be mentioned in the same breath as that trio but hopes are high the four year old will make a big splash over hurdles this winter. A dual winner for Augustin Adeline De Boisbrunet in France, the Nickname gelding registered two victories at Auteuil towards the backend of last year.

Another trip to the Parisian track in November for a Grade 1 hurdle could be on his agenda before being aimed at conditions hurdles over here. Long-term, chasing will ultimately bring out the best in the Chris Giles and Colm Donlon owned Le Mercurey.

It is early days to be thinking about the Triumph Hurdle but Nicky Henderson will be seeking to win it for a record sixth time next March. The head of Seven Barrows has taken charge of the lightly raced HARGAM, who won over 12 furlongs at Longchamp in May for Alain de Royer-Dupre in France.

Beaten half a length by Group One-placed Teletext on his debut at the same track on his debut, he was almost certainly inconvenienced by the drop back in trip at Maisons-Laffitte last time in Listed company. With Champion Hurdler Binocular now enjoying his retirement, Henderson and JP McManus may have found a ready-made replacement. His jumping bow is eagerly anticipated.

Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Vautour was trained in France by Guillaume Macaire. Rich Ricci and Willie Mullins returned to the Les Mathes based handler in the summer and purchased the once-raced KALKIR.

A well-bred gelding by Montmartre, he finished three lengths fourth behind a stablemate on his sole outing over hurdles at Auteuil in April. The form looks sound, too, with the third Bonito Du Berlais winning three Listed hurdles since. He could emerge as one of Ireland’s leading juvenile hurdlers this campaign.

The Irish pointing scene has been a good source for Andrea and Graham Wylie over the years with Back In Focus, Briar Hill and Shaneshill all winning Grade One events in recent seasons. The co-founder of the Sage Group has purchased the twice-raced UP FOR REVIEW during the spring/summer and the gelded son of Presenting looks set to develop into a smart staying novice hurdler for Willie Mullins.

Previously handled by John Costello in County Clare, the hobdayed five-year-old won by six lengths at Knockanard in February. From the family of Turpin Green, he could be very good indeed over fences one day.

Donald McCain is another big supporter of Irish point-to-points and he has acquired a plethora of high-class recruits over the years, most notably the recently-retired Peddlers Cross. The Cheshire-based trainer has been active during the ‘off season’ buying fresh talent and arguably one of his most interesting acquisitions is the unbeaten MAHLER LAD. A length-and-a-half winner between the flags at Maralin in March, he beat a couple of Willie Mullins-bound opponents when in the care of Colin Bowe. Expect him to contest a bumper before being sent hurdling.

Finally, Jonjo O’Neill was also heavily involved in the spring and summer sales and he also purchased a number of former pointers privately. They included 10-lengths Tallow winner MONBEG GOLD, who will sport Martin Broughton’s green and red silks, which were carried to Festival glory last March by Taquin Du Seuil.

Formerly trained by Sean Doyle, he powered clear of his rivals and was snapped up soon afterwards by the master of Jackdaws Castle. Unfortunately, his sire Gold Well is no longer with us, having died following a bout of colic last November, but not before he produced Holywell and Johns Spirit for the same yard.

One Jump Ahead, which includes exclusive interviews with leading owners Rich Ricci and Graham Wylie, plus Harry Fry, Warren Greatrex, Nicky Henderson, Philip Hobbs, Alan King, Charlie Longsdon, Donald McCain, Paul Nicholls, David Pipe, John Quinn and Lucinda Russell, can be purchased for £8.99 (including postage) from www.mhpublications.co.uk

Respect to paz :). First out with this one

Nichols Canyon

The Grade 1 Royal Bond Hurdle at Fairyhouse on Sunday was not as strong a contest as it might have been. Erstwhile Supreme Novices’ Hurdle favourite Allez Colombieres was pulled up early on and the Dermot Weld-trained Tandem didn’t appear to run his race. That said, there was a lot to like about the performance that Nichols Canyon put up in winning the race, and he is an exciting novice now.

Two significant positives about this run. Firstly, he settled well, better than he had settled on his debut over hurdles at Cork four weeks previously. Secondly, his jumping was good, fast and sharp and accurate. The visual impression that he created could hardly have been better, he travelled well through the race, he moved up nicely on the outside on the run to the final flight and he came away impressively. Also, he handled this yielding ground well, for a horse who was at his best on soft ground on the flat.

The Authorized gelding was high class on the flat when with John Gosden. He won two listed races at the back-end of his three-year-old season in 2013, one at Ascot and one at Saint-Cloud, and he finished a close-up second behind Cubanita in the Group 3 St Simon Stakes in between those two runs. He rounded off his three-year-old season with a flat mark of 111, awarded after that listed race win at Saint-Cloud, when he had Inis Meain four lengths behind him in second place. Obviously, if he can translate his flat form to hurdles, he could be a really classy hurdler. Also, he stayed a mile and six furlongs well on the flat, so he could do even better stepped up to two and a half miles now.

Just bringing this to the top :)

Anyone know what plans are with Minella Rocco ?

Minella Rocco is owned by JP McManus and the Irish point winner clearly has a bright future, having cost #260,000.

McCoy was fulsome in his praise of the winner and said: "He was very professional. He's a big horse and cost a lot of money, and you can see why. I don't think he's mentally sharp enough for Cheltenham, but we'd know more about him after another run."

Updated his thread on jumps horses to follow G1. Will be serious chaser next season.

Fine Article another one I am looking forward to next year.

Had no idea where to post this so apologies if it's in the wrong place

Bay of freedom is making his hurdling debut in the first at Down Royal tomorrow night. Despite it only being two miles and having to carry a penalty we are pretty hopeful. Luke Dempsey rides.

Good luck BOF.
I'm fascinated why he hasn't been put away for the Summer - he is obviously a decent horse so presumably you're targeting some decent races next season, won't the horse need a decent break ?
And his debut over timber will obviously be a great education for the horse, if his break comes after tomorrow would that education be diluted if not seeing a racecourse for another 4/5 months ?
Forgive my ignorance BOF, I've never owned a horse so don't understand these things.
I wish you well

Great questions Istabraq and thank you for your very gratifying comments. Here's our thinking (Peter's and mine): we think he thrives at this time of year so the plan is to try and win a maiden hurdle and then aim for Galway in July (where's he's already won) and the 2 1/2 mile novice there. We wanted to run by the beginning of June so we could give him a bit of time off before Galway; after that, who knows, but would probably keep him going with a few short breaks through November/December. We would miss the real winter ground and, depending on if he's shown any hurdling ability, target a Spring campaign. Probably more detail than you wanted but, if you want more, the two latest blogs talk about this even more http://www.cheltenhamdream.com/blog-diary/

Thanks BOF, appreciate the response.
Great blog too !
That 11s you were hoping for turned out to be a little optimistic, Bet365 2s and P Power 5/4 !
Will have an interest, good evenings racing tomorrow with Stratford hunters too.
Good luck !

Interesting bumper in the last at D Royal tomorrow, Gordon Elliott, Irelands new king of bumpers, has Wellington Road up against an Aiden O'Brien shortie who couldn't win an average race last time.
Elliott has booked Jamie Codd which is interesting.....

At the risk of boring everyone I just wanted to let you know that Bay of Freedom is in the last at Roscommon on Monday night. It's not a great race and, if you ignored his hurdles runs, he would have a great chance; that's a difficult thing to do however. Since Galway (where he ran too bad to be true) he has been in great form, Davy Russell was down to school him on Friday and Peter was so excited about his jumping he called me from the gallops. The chiropractor has worked on a couple of things and we have slightly changed his medication and we will see if this all works. It's difficult to be confident but Peter felt we might beat Credo Star at Galway and she finished second so he definitely is underperforming; if all is right now it could be very different tomorrow. I just hope he jumps well and enjoys it all and we'll take it from there. There's a little more detail in the blog for anyone who is interested: http://www.cheltenhamdream.com/blog-diary/
