2014 Gold Cup

Yeah he very well could be. Be interesting to see what sort of race he's entered in next -- whether it be a hurdle or chase. Personally I'd stick him to hurdles and go down the World Hurdle route as At Fishers Cross has been shown up and Big Bucks is still to race this year. If Annie Power goes for the Champion Hurdle then he must have a squeak. Tiday Bay and also On His Own and Prince de Beauchene could be two others for Wylie.

Wylie has a lot of the same types. National weights are Feb some time so maybe they could keep powder dry until then and switch Boston Bob afterwards but cant see it myself.

Back in Focus is a loss as surely he would have been a national contender this year for Wylie

Jockey Barry Geraghty believes the state of the going on Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup day will have a big bearing on whether Bobs Worth can retain his crown on 14 March.

Last year's winner got his season back on track when he showed a devastating turn of foot to win the Lexus at Leopardstown over Christmas after a lifeless reappearance in the Betfair Chase at Haydock.

Despite winning last March, Geraghty felt that ground was as soft as Nicky Henderson's charge would have liked and is hoping for slightly quicker conditions this time around.

"The Lexus was a top-class race with all the form horses there, so it was a really good race," Geraghty told Betfred TV.

"It was a good performance. He picked up well going to the last and quickened really well off the back of it.

"I think the ground in the Gold Cup was on the softer side for him. He was very much workmanlike in the Gold Cup, whereas in Leopardstown he showed his pace.

"I'd imagine it's straight to the Gold Cup. There's the Argento at Cheltenham in a few weeks but the ground is likely to be very soft and there aren't many options for horses like him.

"He's better with space between his races as he does take a while to recover as he takes a lot out of himself.

"I'd be very hopeful (he can win again). The ground will be a big factor on the day. The better the ground, the better for him."

Bobs Worth is one of 36 entries for the Gold Cup along with stablemates Long Run, the 2011 winner, and Hennessy hero Triolo D'Alene.

Henderson claimed the trainers' championship last year from Paul Nicholls, and his great rival looks set to pose the biggest threat to Bobs Worth with King George winner Silviniaco Conti, who was travelling well last year before falling three fences from home.

Having finished third in the Betfair Chase at Haydock behind Cue Card, he then outstayed Colin Tizzard's stable star at Kempton on Boxing Day.

The two could clash again, although Cue Card is also likely to have other options at the Festival.

Nicholls could also run Al Ferof, third in the King George, Unioniste, Rocky Creek and Tidal Bay.

First Lieutenant is a horse who comes to life in the spring and he has run well at the last three Festivals, including when behind Cue Card in the Ryanair last year.

Having returned to his best in the Lexus, when second to Bobs Worth, he may step up in trip for the Gold Cup this year for trainer Mouse Morris.

Owners Gigginstown House Stud have also entered Bog Warrior, Last Instalment, Dedigout and Roi Du Mee.

Last Instalment was one of the leading lights in the staying novice chase ranks around two years ago before being sidelined by injury.

Trainer Philip Fenton said: "It's a bit too early to talk about Cheltenham for Last Instalment, but he will have his first run back in the Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles (16 January).

"He has been pleasing in his work so far and everything has gone very satisfactorily with him, but I'm sure he will improve for his first run as we haven't pushed him at home.

"He seems versatile in regards to trip and ground, so we will get his first couple of runs out of the way and see how he progresses. We have got him in the Ryanair as well just to keep all bases covered."

Other Irish entries include last year's RSA winner Lord Windermere, Dessie Hughes' Lyreen Legend and Mount Benbulben.

IWillie Mullins has also given Arvika Ligeonniere, Boston Bob and Rubi Ball the option.

Venetia Williams has entered Katenko and Houblon Des Obeaux, while David Pipe has put in Dynaste.

Cloudy Too could run for Sue Smith, with The Giant Bolster, second and fourth in the last two Gold Cups, again in contention for David Bridgwater.

Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup Facts & Figures

Background Information

The Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most valuable non-handicap chase in Britain. The total prize money for the 2014 running will be £550,000.

The first Cheltenham Gold Cup was a three-mile Flat race in 1819, won by Mr Bodenham’s Spectre. The chase as we now know it was
introduced in 1924, with Red Splash successful. The winning prize money was £700.

Biggest Field
The joint biggest Gold Cup field ever was in 2006,when 22 runners went to post. Since the race was first run in 1924, there has onl
y been one other renewal with more than 18 runners - in 1982 when Silver Buck defeated 21 rivals. The current maximum field allowed is 24.

Multiple Winners
In the Gold Cup's history only seven horses have won more than once, the most recent of them is Kauto Star, who took the spoils in 2007 and 2009 and is the only horse to regain the Gold Cup. The others were Best Mate (2002/03/04), L'Escargot (1970/71), Arkle (1964/65/66), Cottage Rake (1948/49/50), Golden Miller (1932/33/34/35/36) and Easter Hero (1929/30). Golden Miller holds the record for the most Gold Cup victories, with five consecutive wins from 1932-36.

Most Successful Owner
Golden Miller’s owner, Dorothy Paget, is also the most successful owner in the race with an amazing seven victories, with Roman Hackle (1940) a nd Mont Tremblant (1952) adding to Golden Miller’s five wins.

Most Successful Trainer
The most successful trainer is Tom Dreaper, who won five Gold Cups with three separate horses, namely Prince Regent (1946), Arkle (1964, 1965 and 1966) and Fort Leney (1968).

Paul Nicholls is the most successful current handle trainer with four wins from three separate horses -
See More Business (1999), Kauto Star (2007 & 2009) and Denman (2008).

What a phenomenal period this was for Paul.

History beckons this year. Think with Silvi or Rocky will allow him to equal Tom Dreaper's record.

Well we’ve had the 2 big key trials for the Gold Cup now and it’s clear the two at the head of the Market deserve their places. Bobs Worth bounced back to form on a track that suits him, left handed galloping tracks are exactly what he needs. He won the Lexus with quite a surprising burst of speed at the end, I had thought he was slower and a strong stayer but he looks to have oodles of class and a top class attitude. All horses can be forgiven a run and it’s easy to just write off that Haydock run completely. He’s rightfully back at the head of the betting for the Gold Cup and will take a world of beating.

Over at Kempton on much softer ground Cue Card gamely tried to front run again, but Sil Conti never let him have any rope and eventually managed to stay on strongly and get by him after the last. It was an impressive performance from the horse. A horse I’ve never managed to warm to and have been critical of, I’ll hold my hands up and say I was impressed and have been wrong about him. Who knows what would have happened had he not fallen in the Gold Cup. But it remains a worry that he’s only ever won on flat tracks and sometimes horses remember falls so although I wouldn’t be overly concerned about him at Cheltenham it’s still worth considering and I’d want a little more in the price to offset that worry.

If I was a Cue Card backer I wouldn’t be as worried as some people are about him being in a Gold Cup. There is a world away from trying to make all end to end around Kempton on soft ground. You never get a chance to fill up like you do coming down the hill at Cheltenham. Also I don’t think he visually emptied. I’d said prior to Kempton that I’m qute sure he is a better horse going left handed and given he’s by Kings theatre he’d prefer better ground. He also has a superb record around Cheltenham and he could be covered up early on before taking it up on the final circuit. I think he’s most certainly a Gold Cup horse and he’ll have to be run and find out on the day if he stays the trip.

Al Ferof was back in 3rd and thoughts of him running in the Ryanair made me a tad confused, he was so damn slow he never got into the race, he jumped left too at times and yet kept plugging on at the end to take 3rd. From my reading of how he ran I’d be running him left handed next and over further than 3 miles. He needs a stamina test and he needs to avoid being outpaced so a switch to a galloping tack like Newbury for the Denman Chase is a good call. If he wins that he’ll surely go for the Gold Cup and if he doesn’t they’ll head for the Ryanair. I think he will be seen at his best in a Gold Cup tbh, whether he’s good enough I don’t know, but Ryanair talk is only there as Nicholls already has his Gold Cup horse. 16/1 nrnb could appear value as should he win the Denman Chase over 3m1f that 16/1 would be long gone and should he lose he’d not run so you could get your money back.

Back to Leopardstown and First Lieutenant again found one better in this race and it was the 3rd time he’s had to look at Bobs Worths behind. First things first with this horse, he is much better going left handed, he’s posted all his worst runs going right handed. Also he’d prefer better ground as he’s by Presenting and it’s no doubt his best has been seen in spring. I’m also totally in the belief he is an out and out stayer, he was outpaced by Bobs worth at the end in this yet he kept on. I think with the injury to Sir Des Champs we’ll finally get to see this horse run at his favourite track over what I believe is his trip, the Gold Cup trip. He’s not as good as Bobs Worth of that I’ve no doubt, but his form is so close to that horse there is every reason to believe he could be next best. This race is falling to pieces a bit and FL has never been unplaced going left handed over 3m+ with his record being 223212 (3 of those defeats to bobs Worth) and his Cheltenham record is 122. Given he’s available non runner no bet at 12/1 he looks to me the e/w banker in this, in all likelihood he’ll be 2nd or 3rd. But if anything were to happen to Bobs Worth before or during the race it could fall into First Lieutenants lap.

Boston Bob is another who could be interesting nrnb at a price of 25/1. It's quite possible that with the injury to Sire Des Champs they might pitch Bob into the Irish Hennessy and see how he aquits himself. Ruby Walsh has no ride in the Gold Cup from what I can see and if Bob runs well he could line up in the Gold cup and there is no chance 25/1 will be available if he does so given the Mullins/Walsh combination.

1pt e/w - First Lieutenant 12/1 nrnb - B365
1pt - Al Ferof 16/1 nrnb - Betfred
1pt e/w Boston Bob 25/1 nrnb - B365

Timeform
Following the initial entries for the Gold Cup on the 14th of March, Keith Melrose selects Timeform's idea of the likeliest winner as well as a couple of wild cards...

It's all very different from 10 months ago. Following the 2013 Gold Cup, it was tempting to herald a new era of staying chasers- perhaps silver to Kauto Star and Denman's golden one- with Bobs Worth, Sir des Champs, Long Run and other, smaller players set to compete for top honours time and again over the coming seasons.

As 2014 starts we find ourselves in quite different times. Long Run seems long gone, Sir des Champs has suffered a non-starter of a season and Bobs Worth's mask of unerring reliability has slipped, if only just a little.

There are also Gold Cup challenges which have come and gone in the space of just the last few weeks. Cue Card emerged as a genuine contender when storming home in the Betfair Chase before faltering close home in the King George. Irrespective of the trigger for that collapse, it doesn't bode well for the Gold Cup which famously takes so much more getting than the King George- just ask One Man or Florida Pearl. As it stands with doubts over Sprinter Sacre's wellbeing, Cue Card's connections would probably be better advised to go the One Man route and tackle the Champion Chase.

Al Ferof, like One Man owned by John Hales, also has his participation in doubt after a somewhat disappointing showing at Kempton. Al Ferof most likely wasn't beaten by the trip, though it was his first serious test following an extended lay-off through injury so much will rest on his next start, mooted to be the Denman Chase at Newbury.

Silviniaco Conti, the tragic hero of last year's Gold Cup, gained partial compensation when benefiting from Cue Card's Kempton stutter and is now second favourite (behind Bobs Worth) for full redemption. We can now be confident that he'll stay, a view that wasn't held universally when he came down three out last March, though did the King George tell us all that much more?

Visual impressions suggest that, all other things being equal, Silviniaco Conti is still inferior to Cue Card: greater stamina and a guileful ride from Noel Fehily were the difference on Boxing Day. Before the King George, with his stamina not generally perceived to be a problem and Bobs Worth's wellbeing still in the balance, Cue Card could be backed at not much below 9.0, so why should Silviniaco Conti be 4.7 now?

This is all a roundabout way of saying that Bobs Worth still provides the best option among the market leaders. The bare form of his recent Lexus Chase win was far removed from what will be required to win the Gold Cup, but that race was an away fixture for the champion in every sense of the word: a steadily-run three miles at a track with a relatively short straight for him to unwind on.

Bobs Worth's Leopardstown win, no matter how workmanlike and irrespective of what finished uncomfortably close up, can be taken as a fairly positive indication that he is as strong as last year. Should that hold true, anything above 3.0 for the Gold Cup is fair.

Tipping the favourite is easy. The point made right at the top of the article still stands, though: the top bracket isn't as impermeable as it once looked. We can therefore look a bit further down the betting for a couple of long-priced types that may yet have a say.

Bare form is a less-than-pressing consideration here too, as it really ought to be when looking beyond the obvious. For example, those skimming results would see Boston Bob as a Festival flop, being a beaten favourite in 2012 and a faller in last year's RSA; of course, there's more to it than that. Boston Bob was the likeliest winner when he came down at the last in the RSA and had beaten eventual victor Lord Windermere under less suitable conditions the time before.

Talking of unsuitable conditions, Boston Bob made his reappearance over Christmas, in a hurdle race over two and a half miles. He dotted up, admittedly against inferior opposition but showing more than enough zest to suggest reported problems earlier in the campaign won't have a lasting effect. Untried over the Gold Cup trip but bound to thrive over it, Boston Bob can be expected to show high-class form given the chance.

We should deal with the Thursday question before we finish with Boston Bob. It has been reported that he would be aimed at the World Hurdle. However, with Sir des Champs now out there is no obvious Gold Cup challenge from the Willie Mullins yard, while indications at the time of writing nominate Annie Power's most likely target as the World Hurdle. It's not at all difficult to see thoughts graduating towards a Gold Cup tilt for Boston Bob.

'Which Festival race?' is less of a concern with Katenko. He was given a seemingly ambitious entry in last year's Gold Cup before colic ended his season. On two ostensibly disappointing starts this winter he has gone some of the way to justifying the faith. First up in the Hennessy off a BHA mark of 157 (Bobs Worth won the 2012 renewal rated 160, incidentally), Katenko tanked through the race until coming down at the fourteenth and he still seemed in need of the run when finishing a tired fourth at Aintree a week later. The feeling is that Katenko is yet to reveal the full extent of his ability. Depending on where and when he turns up next, he's capable of the sort of trial that would see current odds of 80.0 dry up very quickly.

We should have known last March not to get carried away with the new breed of staying chasers- the course of the Gold Cup rarely does run smooth. Only greats like Best Mate and Kauto Star hang around and Bobs Worth has all the attributes to one day be mentioned in the same breath. However very few can continually produce their best: see the repeated attempts to get a satisfactory match-up between Kauto Star and Denman, two of the most reliable stayers of their day. For that reason, we're advising you add a bit of kick to your ante-post portfolio by including Boston Bob and Katenko, both good examples of the sort of horses that can take an unexpectedly prominent role in the climax of the Festival's feature race.

Recommendations:

2pts win Bobs Worth @ 3.25 in the Cheltenham Gold Cup
1pt win Boston Bob @ 30.0 & Katenko @ 80.0 in the Cheltenham Gold Cup

Bobs Worth Lexus got a low 160s RPR. Silvi over 170. walofs.

Al Ferof the pricewise tip. Also gives thought to Katenko, Rocky Creek and Triolo of ones at bigger prices.

10/10 grade 1 winner
9/10 aged between 7 & 9
9/10 between 2 and 5 runs that season
9/10 won graded Chase that season
9/10 between 5 & 12 runs over fences
8/10 won or placed at festival
8/10 finished 1st or 2nd in a race at cheltenham
8/10 won over at least 3 miles

I've come to the conclusion that Bobs Worth is most likely going to win this race (shocking I know!!!). However with Bet365 and Paddypower going non runner no bet in the championship races, I've decided to back Firts Liuetenant at 8/1. He has a good record at Cheltenham, will appreciate the good ground if they get it and will 100% be aimed for this race with SDC out for the year. One horse that I'd love to see come back to form is Last Installment. Probably too late for him to be a gold cup horse this year but hopefully he rediscovers some of his old form.

First Lieutenant is a cracking ew bet.

I have a general worry about the Lexus form though. For all that it looked a good race I wonder how good it was. Bobs Worth gave a low to mid 160s performance rated through Lord Windermere or Foildubh.

COLIN Tizzard this week gave the clearest indication yet about Cue Card's target for the Cheltenham Festival. "It's 85 per cent certain we will go for the Gold Cup," said the Milborne Port trainer on Monday.
The King's Theatre eight-year-old is entered for the Gold Cup and the shorter Ryanair Chase at the March jamboree and connections were expected to wait until the last possible moment before deciding which to go for.
But for Tizzard, it seems no contest - and not even defeat by market rival Silviniaco Conti in the King George VI Chase at Christmas has dampened his enthusiasm for a tilt at jumping's supreme prize on March 14 for which Cue Card is 8-1 third favourite behind reigning champion Bobs Worth (2-1) and Silviniaco Conti (7-2).

He said: "Cue Card ran a brilliant race in the King George and the first two were well clear of the rest. You can't tell me there is anything easy about the 3m at Kempton Park because they go flat out. I watched re-runs of the 10 previous King Georges and they all finished knackered - it's a track that is as stamina-sapping as Cheltenham.
"Anyway, Cue Card is a better horse going left-handed - just look at his wins at Cheltenham and Haydock Park - and his best form has been at Cheltenham where he has won three times, two of those being at the Festival in the Champion Bumper and last season the Ryanair.
"The only thing that might possibly influence us is the going - if it came up really heavy we might get jumpy and revisit the Ryanair."

Gutted,I had him as a good thing for the Ryanair.I understand them wanting to win the big-un but for me it's a case of the Tizzards hearts ruling their heads. He gets outstayed by a stayer in the KG but they expect to reverse the result over an extra 2f,Not to mention a bloody big hill and of course the reigning champ BW who looks the banker of the meeting to me,I'm struggling to see the logic and if he makes the frame i'll be amazed,The bookies must be laughing their tats off.

Yep....and what distance was the Betfair run over ? On better ground he might get 3 miles but hard to see the Gold Cup playing to his strengths.

I thought the Betfair Chase thing got resolved - was it not the 2012 race that was slow ? Surprised they ruled champion Chase out so soon for cue card too,
