    Listowel Notebook

2014 Listowel race thread at http://www.fatjockey.com/forum/showt...wel-Races-2014

PATRICK Prendergast is enjoying an excellent season with his juveniles, mostly due to the patronage of Grangecon Stud’s Richard Barnes.

This track has been lucky for him this season too and that was kept going by the front-running victory of the Chris Hayes-ridden Sugar Boy in the valuable nursery, the son of Authorized staying on strongly to account for favourite Designs On Rome by two lengths.

“He’s a half-brother to Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx and he’s going to be a 1m 4f horse next year,” said Prendergast afterwards.

He added: “He probably didn’t like that ground but he has buckets of stamina, I’m actually looking forward to running him over 1m 4f on good ground next year. He could go for the good mile nursery at Listowel and the 1m 1f Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown at the end of the season will be his job.”

Baily Green will head to the Listowel Festival later this month after recording his fourth successive victory at Killarney on Saturday.

The Mouse Morris-trained six-year-old was competing in Grade One novice chases last winter and a subsequent breathing operation has seen him raise his game.

Having notched a hat-trick of wins over fences since late May, Baily Green reverted to the smaller obstacles for the valuable K.W.D. Handicap Hurdle and got the better of Domination by a nose in a thrilling finish.

"I was delighted with him. He's a chaser really but there weren't any races for him coming up over fences, so we switched him back to hurdles and it was a nice pot for him to win," said Morris.

"He's always been a good horse and has run in some good races, but he wasn't getting home so he had a wind operation and that seems to have helped.

"He'll probably go to Listowel next and go back over fences, then we'll probably give him a break.

"He's crying out for better ground so we'll probably leave him off during the winter and then bring him back in the spring."

Noticed Ryanair have some cheap enough flights about 100 over Wed Morning back on Saturday from Luton to Kerry.

Anyone know if you would you make the Kerry National with a 13:30 scheduled landing ? Any room pub food recommendations ?

It is about an hour in a taxi ...probably about 50 -60 euro to listowel ....fine if a few of you. Wednesday and Friday are biggest days for crowds. Fridays ladies day is going down the aintree route but without the good races. The beauty of listowel is track being right in town. The racing is of poorer quality than most festivals but it is a good fun meeting. Listowel arms, John bs , christys , jet carrolls will all have racing crowds in them.

I'd say most people staying over in Listowel end up in rented houses in Ballybunion ...the arms hotel is virtually on the racecourse but i'd say they charge well. Allo's is the probably best known restaurant in Listowel but you wouldnt be going to Listowel Races for grub. The Thatch was a fairly lively spot half way between Listowel and BallyB but not sure if its still going.

The meeting only gets going from Wednesday on. They have bands under stands after racing and a lot of the crowd will hang around there until about 7.

Tuesdays declarations havent a lot to get excited about

^ Think that is Mondays Decs ... Tuesday is Lartigue Hurdle as feature.

Valid point about atmosphere building from Wednesday on though. I think they get 30000+ there on Wednesday & Friday and less than 100k in total so maybe only 6000 on average on the other days. Still decent crowds though.

Saturday evening's Gain Horse Feeds Irish St Leger is shaping up to be a cracking contest, but Ken Condon has revealed that he will not rush his improving filly Montebell up in class for a tilt at the Curragh Group One.

A ready winner of the €55,000 fillies' handicap at headquarters on Sunday, Montebell finished second to John Oxx's Hartani -- a leading contender for the one-mile, six-furlong feature -- on her previous outing at Tipperary in May.

Successful in a Cork maiden prior to that, the Roma Syndicate-owned three-year-old confirmed herself an immensely progressive sort with that authoritative reappearance triumph over 12 furlongs four days ago.

However, the handicapper has been lenient -- raising Montebell just 3lb to a mark of 95, seemingly leaving the door open for Condon to have a stab at another big handicap.

"We'll give her an entry for the Listed race at Listowel on Wednesday," the Maynooth handler reported yesterday, "but, by giving her just 3lb, the handicapper has tempted me to maybe go for another handicap; to be fair, 3lb certainly didn't strike me as being harsh.

    Pat keane ....

Ruby Walsh returns to action at Listowel tomorrow and can make the perfect start by guiding Rattan to victory in the Kerrymaid Hurdle.

Third to Baily Green and Domination in a competitive Killarney handicap on his latest appearance, the ground won’t be ideal for Rattan, but he has plenty in hand of the opposition.

Noel Meade’s Top Man Michael gets the nap in the Kerry Ingredients And Flavours three-year-old Hurdle.

A useful sort on the level, he created a favourable impression first time over jumps when easily beating Everything Zain at Roscommon.

Castle Wings is surely the best horse in the Cheestrings Beginners Chase, but is coming back off a long break and making his debut over fences, so is reluctantly passed over.H

The nod falls on the race-fit Cavita Beta, who made a decent start to this game when runner-up behind Ballyadam Brook at Killarney.

Ruby returns with a win. Inspection on flat track tomorrow.
