TRAINER Gordon Elliott will be keeping a close eye on the weather before deciding if he runs Mala Beach, 10-1 co-second favourite with the sponsors, in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Monday. The eight-year-old, who was in front and travelling well when he fell two out in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on his most recent start last month, will work this morning.
He said yesterday: “Mala Beach is an intended runner although I hope the rain that is forecast arrives. He needs it. He’ll do a bit in the morning and then we’ll see what happens with the weather.”
The ground at Fairyhouse dried to ‘good to yielding’ yesterday but rain was forecast for last night and again for Saturday. Speaking yesterday afternoon, racecourse manager Peter Roe said: “We’re expecting about 5mm overnight and Saturday is expected to be wet. After that we could get showers.”
Elliott added: “Bless The Wings, who finished third in the cross-country at Cheltenham last week, will run, as will Captain Von Trappe, while Unic De Bersy and Nickname Exit will probably run. “However, Killer Crow is doubtful and I’m not sure about Cause Of Causes or Lord Scoundrel. We also have Definite Ruby and Riverside City and if they make the cut they’ll probably run.”
Cause Of Causes would have to carry a 12lb penalty for his 12-length win in the Kim Muir Chase at Cheltenham a week ago and Frank Berry, racing manager to the eight-year-old’s owner JP McManus, said yesterday: “We probably won’t decide until Friday morning whether to run him or wait and hope he gets into the Crabbie’s Grand National.”
Berry confirmed the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Another Hero, winner of both his starts over fences, will be in the line-up. “He lacks a bit of experience but Jonjo is happy with him and the plan is to run,” said Berry. O’Neill has trained two of McManus’s four winners of the event – Butler’s Cabin (2007) and Shutthefrontdoor (2014).
Ted Walsh, trainer of Foxrock, the highest-weighted acceptor, said yesterday: “It’s most unlikely he’ll run as he’s going to end up with 11st 12lb on his back. We’ll make a final decision on Friday morning.”
Kerry Lee, trainer of Russe Blanc, winner of the Betfred Classic Chase at Warwick in January, is one of those hoping the rain arrives. She said yesterday: “We’ve left Russe Blanc in and the plan is to run him. “He’s ground dependent – he’s better when it’s soft – but I’ve been in contact with Peter Roe at Fairyhouse and there is a lot of rain forecast.
Have had a small ew bet on Russe Blanc.Kerry Lee places her horses well.
Also covered Wrath of Titans. Nice weight and the Hughes have a good record in this race,
