Aintree Preview Night – Newton Le Willows (5th April, 2017)

    Panel

NEALE DOUGHTY (ND) - Grand National winning jockey aboard Hallo Dandy
KEITH MCHUGH (KM) - Racing Post journalist
GORDON ARMISTEAD (GA) - NRC Racing Diary author.

    Thursday Races

    1.45

GA – Top Notch, had hard race at the Festival and maybe would take on with Frodon or Cloudy Dream, plums for Frodon.
    ND – Likes Frodon
KM – Daryl Jacob divides opinion, blames him for not winning on Top Notch at Festival. ND disagrees and says sometimes the horse is to blame through various circumstances like hanging etc. KM says Top Notch is the form pick.

    2.20

KM – Defi Du Seuil odds on favourite and worthy one. Divin Bere small chance.
    ND – DDS wins
    GA – DDS wins

    2.50

GA – Doesn’t like Cue Card, Empire of Dirt best form in the race. Bristol de Mai has concerns over the ground. Silviniaco Conti hasn’t been at best all season. Thinks Cue Card and EoD prices are the wrong way round.
ND – EoD form with Sizing John Is the best in the race. SC is better round here than Cheltenham.
    KM – EoD should win.

    3.25

KM – Buveur D’Air should win. Rashaan decent form in Ireland, interesting bet without BD.
ND – Rashaan with BD, most horses exposed here.
GA – The New One will set the pace, BD will win.

    4.05

GA – Feels On the Fringe wasn’t really put in the race at Cheltenham, would think 4 or 5 could take him on here. Balnaslow good effort at the Festival. Dineur or Bears Affair could be EW value. Black Thunder is far too big and Sam Waley Cohen is good around Aintree. Mendip Express was third in this last year. Pacha Du Polder was given a great ride by Bryony Frost at Cheltenham.
ND – PDP will run a good race, champions up Bryony Frost. Also interested in Black Thunder, would rather go for jockey than horse in these races. Sizing Solution has a very capable jockey on board at a massive price.

    4.40

KM – Likes Gino Trail, very good jumper. Second behind Buveur D’Air at Warwick is good form. Double W’s dropped back in trip may suit.
GA – Alisier D’Ireland will tear off in front and make it a true test but has backed Gino Trial at 20s. Thought Double W’s was weak in finish at the Festival and wouldn’t trust Yorkist as he travels a dream but can’t finish off.
    ND – Likes Gino Trail.

    5.15

GA - Petticoat Tails has standout form. Irish Roe has listed form but crown got to her at Cheltenham. Likes Shearling and may back her.
KM – Agrees that Shearling may be the one. Horse out of Rail Link, good pedigree.
    ND – Says watching brief.

    Friday Races

    1.40

GA – Ice Cold Soul won at Leopardstown and is a bet for me. Missed cut at Cheltenham so is fresh for this. Noel Meade is fond of him.

    2.20

GA – Mount Mews is untested in this grade. Lough Derg Spirit the same. The Unit EW could be of interest but could run elsewhere.
ND – Why was Moon Racer a no show at Cheltenham? Maybe there was an issue early in the race, would love to know why he didn’t perform and may have had excuses. Interested that he runs here which indicates he is fit and well. Reivers Lad could be of interest EW and the Richards team have always done well at this meeting (going back to Gordon Richards’s days).
KM – If Moon Racer is ok he is the standout bet and should win. Likes Mount Mews and will back him wherever he shows up. Will like the ground and been saved for this meeting although expected a bigger price.

    2.50

KM – Might Bite very talented and should win if he stays up. Whisper good at Aintree. Balko Des Flos has bits and pieces of good form.
GA – Thinks field will diminish with horses going elsewhere. If Might Bite jumps he wins.
ND – MB is very useful and travels well, should win.

    3.25

KM – God’s Own likes course, won it last year. Sub Lieutenant has the best form though.
GA – New trip for Fox Norton, may stretch him, between GO and SL who has best form. Uxizandre was awful at the Festival.
ND – Winner will come from GO, SL and Uxi. Thinks the latter may be better here after the run at the Festival.

    4.05

GA – Alechi Inois is overpriced in this, being going over much further and drop back in trip will help. Irish Cavalier could pop in here, looked a warm up at Cheltenham. Bouvreuil runs well but can’t seem to win, well handicapped. As de Mee every chance, jumps well here. Mr Diablo well weighted. Asks why is Go Conquer favourite? Eastlake either wins or is pulled up. ND calls him a job horse and it depends what the trainer wants from him.
ND – Irish Cavalier one of better horses in this. Would be interested if Eastlake was ‘off’ or not. Imjoeking big EW price.
KM – Bouvreuil bit soft but could easy go in here, well handicapped. Nicholls horse traditionally run well in April.

    4.40

GA - Constantine Bay was hampered LTO and should go well. Gayebury big price EW dropped back into Novice Company. West Approach is top rated but appears to have had a wasted season. Stable out of form though.
ND – Says West Approach should win in this company and of interest.
KM – Le Breuil EW price and has a line of form with Cheltenham winner Willoughby Court. West Approach half-brother to Thistlecrack and this is a track that Thistlecrack likes.

    5.15

KM – Black Op looks a good horse and of interest,
GA – Bumper looks poor but probably would go for Black Op. If the Cap Fits could be decent.
ND – Would look in Paddock before the race.

    Saturday Races

    1.45

KM – Fortunate George looks a stayed and on a good weight.
GA – What a Knight on a good weight and ready for this. Joe Farrell could be of interest on Handicap debut.
    ND – Nothing of interest.

    2.25

GA – Finian’s Oscar missed Cheltenham but stable in poor form. Brio Conti too short, one at odds is Messire Des Obeaux.
ND – Likes MDO and King horses at Aintree.
KM – Keep an eye on Captain Forez if he goes here, if not then for the future, trained like a good horse.

    3.00

KM – Charbel fell at Festival and probably would have finished second.
GA – Politilogue will probably lead them round. No real opinion
    ND – Nothing of interest.

    3.40

GA - Emerging Force favourite, anything can pop up here though. Been following Mystical Knight and may back EW. Bearly Legal could be of interest EW off bottom weight.
KM – Briefly mentions Henri Parry Morgan if he is back to form.
ND – No bet for him

    4.20

KM – Interesting who Barry Geraghty rides. Cole Harden ran ok here last year. Yanworth is the class horse here.
    GA – Snow Falcon EW.

    5.15 – GRAND NATIONAL

KM & GA basically went through every horse and a few were mentioned to have chances.
ND would ride One for Arthur if given the choice.
KM – Wouldn’t rule out Roi Des Francs of Tenor Nivernais.
GA – Thinks Wounded Warrior has a big race in him.
KM – Likes Sam Waley Cohen here and The Young Master will go well and could be laid out. Cause of Causes only seems to have one race per year in him and that is at Cheltenham.
GA – Stats against Vieux Lion Rouge and Definitely Red may not stay and jumping may not be up to scratch.
KM – Ballynagour well handicapped and pulled up last 3 starts. Was going well last year but got distracted on the second circuit by a loose horse.
GA – Highland Lodge too big a price, form is good. Vincente will stay and if in contention on second circuit must have a chance.
KM – Likes Rogue Angel if Cooper rides and Bless the Wings if he gets in.

    Selections

KM – Rogue Angel (Win), Houblon Des Obeaux (EW)
GA – Pleasant Company (Win), Measureofmydreams (EW)
ND – One for Arthur (Win), Pendra (EW)

    6.15

GA – Tommy Silver if Stan Sheppard rides. Intense Tango of interest.
KM – Multicultural looks a nice horse for the future.
    ND - Nothing

    Naps of Meeting

    ND – Didn’t select one
    KM – Mount Mews
    GA – Ice Cold Soul

All in all an enjoyable evening and nice to hear ND’s stories about horses he has ridden and trainers he had ridden for.
