    Nicholls

shocking race for nicholls so far

However, this has not been Paul Nicholls’s race so far with Chapoturgeon (fell first) and Al Ferof (beaten 12 lengths) failing as favourite and, for horses to be sent off as fancied as 100/30, 11/4 and 11/2, three of his other contenders, who all bypassed Cheltenham, were most disappointing beaten 33 lengths, 24 lengths and 26 lengths respectively. The stable’s Cristal Bonus ran well to finish second three years ago after pulling up in the JLT where he returned with an abscess on his withers but his sole contender last year finished a tailed-off last of five. His name was Dodging Bullets.

Poor enough turnout for a Grade 1 - on the basis that VV will be favourite Josses Hill is probably the stats pick - I wonder if AP was offered the ride ?

Trainer/Jockey: Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson have teamed up to win the last two of the last 4 renewals. Henderson and Geraghty have won 2 of the last 5.
Previous Race: The 6 winners to date all ran at Cheltenham (3 in the Arkle, 3 in the JLT) finishing 0 4 2 3 5 2 last time out.
      Starting Price: Just one winning favourite in the first 6 renewals with favourite finishing F 2 2 3 1 2. The winners market position was 3 3 2 2 1 2.
Ratings: all 6 winners were rated 147-155.

If Nico can get Josses Hill into a rythmn he can win this.

And it’s quite likely that one of my rides will win the opening 2m4f Grade 1 One Magnificent City Manifesto Novices' Chase, JOSSES HILL (1.40).

I’ve thought a lot of him since the season started but it’s taken him time to understand what’s required over fences.

He jumped much better with me at Cheltenham last time when we were third in the Arkle and on the day he’d have appreciated further than two.

The speed of that race helped his jumping and I’m sure he’s now much closer to the finished article.

The nicer ground will be in his favour and two and a half miles should be perfect.

I don't think there's a thread for it but Lac Fontana must be worth a few quid ew in the 5.15, Sean Bowen up, Paul Nichols trained, 16's at 365 with 4 places at quarter the odds

We got word before the Coral Cup that Au Ptit Sains had been working with Lac Fontana at home regularly and was cantering all over him, obviously APS won the Coral Cup but I got the impression they thought he was a long long way ahead of the handicapper before that race (had beaten a horse in France who was rated 150 here, APS got in with 139) and he won in a tight finish.
Not that any of that should put you off backing LF.
I may have a small interest in the other PN runner, Katgary who returned to form at Newbury latest and will love the better ground

                    Race Verdict

This looks between the quartet who clashed in the Racing Post Arkle, with neither Cash And Go or Val De Law (very closely matched on their Leicester meeting last month) looking good enough to mount a challenge. Josses Hill came out on top at Cheltenham but still looks anything but a natural over his fences, so preference is for VIBRATO VALTAT. Paul Nicholls' charge can be rated a fair bit better than his fourth-place Arkle finish having tried to go with the top-class winner Un De Sceaux from an early stage. He unsurprisingly ran out of steam, but expect him to be ridden with a lot more patience and Sam Twiston-Davies can get him up late. Clarcam is certainly a lot better than he showed last time and it is worth noting that he finished runner-up in the Grade 1 juvenile hurdle at this meeting 12 months ago.
Selection: Vibrato Valtat Danger: Josses Hill Alternative: Clarcam

THE CRABBIES GRAND NATIONAL FESTIVAL, AINTREE

                      FIRST RACE WINNING QUOTES

THE ONE MAGNIFICENT CITY MANIFESTO NOVICES' CHASE (GRADE 1)

                      CLARCAM STRIKES FOR IRELAND

The Gordon Elliott-trained Clarcam bounced back from a disappointing run at last month's Cheltenham Festival to win the opening One Magnificent City Manifesto Novices' Chase under Ruby Walsh at 5/1.

"It's great to get the week off to a good start. I wasn't happy with him at Cheltenham and you could see that he was never going after a couple of fences. We thought he was going to be placed at Cheltenham, but he just never got into the race - Un De Sceaux is such freak, he sickened everything," said Elliott.
"It was good to see him back and Ruby gave him a great ride today, Bryan (Cooper) is unlucky to be suspended. He does a lot of work with these horses at home and he will be on this horse again.

"He jumped great today. I think he got a bit close to one but this is what it is all about - Grade Ones and Aintree, all the big Festivals - so we are very happy.

"The way he travelled and jumped, we would definitely be staying at this trip or going further. I don't think that we will go back to two miles with him. I think we'll put him out in a field now and look forward to next season. I doubt he'll go to Punchestown but we never say never."

Looking ahead to the Crabbie's Grand National, Elliott added: "Cause Of Causes is in good form and schooling well so he's in great nick. We're looking forward to Saturday."

Winning rider Ruby Walsh added: "Clarcam travelled super and jumped brilliantly. He bounced out of Cheltenham, which was great.

"It's good ground and he probably appreciated it too - he ran well here last year."

OWNERS DELIGHTED WITH RUNNER-UP VIBRATO VALTAT

Second-placed Vibrato Valtat, trained by Paul Nicholls, may have a last outing of the season at Sandown.

Dan Downie, racing manager of owners Axom, said: "We're delighted, very happy with him. He had a hard race at Cheltenham [where he was fourth in the Arkle Chase] but came back here and ran as good as we could hope.

"We won't go to Punchestown - the only race we would consider would be at Sandown on the last day of the season, the Celebration Chase. He takes his races so well that he'll probably be fresh and bucking on Monday morning."

The Jamie Snowden-trained Val De Law finished third.

Snowden said: "What a run. What a fabulous run. That's only his third ever novice chase - he fell in his first one and was second in his next, so to step him in at the deep end in a Grade One, we thought win, lose or draw, if we win happy days, if we don't and get placed we've got a fabulous novice for next season.

"He's in at Punchestown, which is next season - he won't go to Sandown because it's this season - in the two-mile novice chase. He might have found two and a half miles a bit beyond him so we will drop him back to two miles."

                      GOING AFTER THE FIRST

Following the One Magnificent City Manifesto Novices' Chase (on the Mildmay Course), the jockeys reported the ground as follows:

Ruby Walsh, who rode Clarcam (1st), said "good ground".

Sam Twiston-Davies, on Vibrato Valtat (2nd), stated "lovely ground - it's beautiful".

Brendan Powell, who rode Val De Law (3rd), opined "good, good to soft - it couldn't be better out there".

Nico De Boinville, on board Josses Hill (4th), remarked "it's good, good to soft - lovely ground".

A P McCoy, on Three Kingdoms (5th), commented "good, good to soft - lovely ground".
