When Dodging Bullets broke his duck at Galway last July off a mark of 79, trainer Andrew Oliver said: "It took a while for the penny to drop with Dodging Bullets but it has now and he is an improving horse." He won his next race, ended the season on 93 and was sold to Nicholls. Delaying his hurdling debut until Kempton in February, he came up against Triumph Hurdle favourite Grumeti. He was particularly green there, suggesting there was plenty of improvement, and Nicholls was left in two minds whether to run in the Triumph or wait until Aintree.

As it happened, he ran a blinder at Cheltenham, where he didn't get the best of rides, making his ground up too quickly around the outside and then getting to the front too soon. He will be wiser and more street-smart at Aintree, the sharper track will play more to his strengths and he will have the addition of Ruby Walsh in the saddle. I expect him to emerge best of his generation by campaign-end.

Nicholls also expects to be strrongly represented in the novice hurdles and novice chases at the showpiece event.

"Elsewhere, we have Prospect Wells for the 2m novice, and Pearl Swan and Dodging Bullets for the juvenile. Pearl Swan could go for the 2m4f race, though; I haven't decided," he added.

Countrywide Flame will attempt to prove his Triumph Hurdle win was no fluke in the Matalan Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree on Thursday.

John Quinn's diminutive battler won the Cheltenham event as an unconsidered 33-1 outsider, but appeared to win on merit. With Grumeti, Pearl Swan and Dodging Bullets likely to be in opposition again, there would be no argument about the champion juvenile if he scores again for the Malton team.

Speaking on Racing UK, Quinn's son and assistant Sean said: "The plan is to run at Aintree on Thursday. He came out of the Triumph in good shape and he lost no weight at all. Since Cheltenham his work has been very good and we're hoping for a big run."

Not sure I'd have gone with the other of PFN's

Nicholls, though, may have even more winners on day one with DODGING BULLETS another in the Matalan Anniversary 4-Y-O Anniversary Juvenile Hurdle (2.30pm).

It will only be the third run of the Dubawi gelding’s career and he is still a maiden. But he will have learned a lot from his fast-finishing fourth in the JCB Triumph Hurdle. He is another who will be better suited by Aintree and can give Nicholls a second successive win in the race following Zarkander’s success 12 months ago.

    The case for Grumeti

The other Grade One prize on the opening day of Aintree's Grand National meeting is the Matalan Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle. There did not appear to be any fluke about Countrywide Flame's victory in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham but with less of an emphasis on stamina round here, Alan King's Grumeti could well turn the tables. The four-year-old showed a potent mixture of class, guts and sound hurdling technique to win at Cheltenham and Kempton earlier this year, earning him the tag of Triumph Hurdle favourite. He looked set to deliver approaching the final flight, but he was just outstayed up the hill, beaten a little less than four lengths into third. This track should suit him much better and he looks certain to be involved in the finish.
