  • 2014 Triumph Hurdle

Willie Mullins team for 2013-14 (so far)

Vautor was flagged in OJA same family as Sir Des Champs.

Analifet (f Califet - Viana) and Gitane Du Berlais, (f Balko - Boheme Du Berlais) both of whom won a hurdle race in France early in the season,

Abbyssial (g Beneficial - Mega D’Estruval), who was placed over hurdles on his only start in France and who will be racing for Archie and Violet O’Leary,

Florishwells D’Ete, a filly owned by JP McManus,

Long Dog (g Notnowcato - Latanazul) whom we bought off Andy Oliver after winning by eight lengths over 1m2f at Sligo.

Don Poli (g Poliglote -Dalamine), Vautour (g Robin Des Champs - Gazelle De Mai) and Valseur Lido (g Anzillero - Libido Rock) are three four-year-olds from France who will be hurdling for Gigginstown

Aklan, who won a couple of races including a Listed event for John Oxx last year, is another four-year-old for hurdling.

Urticaire (5m Mister Sacha - Opium Des Mottes) won a French bumper in March and is a nice prospect for mares’ hurdles.

Royal Irish Hussar runs again tomorrow at Wetherby. Could be the right sort if they get the jumping sorted.

Another one in Hendersons from Barrys blog

And I’ve got a very good chance of completing a good week for Simon when Nicky saddles KENTUCKY HYDEN (1.55) for the three-year-old hurdle.

Unless there’s something unforeseen lurking in the shadows this looks a very winnable contest to me because this horse ran in good company in Paris.

He was placed in his last three starts which means he has experience but is still a maiden which gives us plenty to work with,

He stayed two miles-plus in France so this stiff finish over two will suit him well and there are no worries about softer ground because that’s all he’s run on so far.

Anyone who witnessed the hurdling debut of the Nicky Henderson-trained Royal Irish Hussar would have been hard to convince that day that, come the middle of November, the colt would be demonstrably the most accomplished juvenile seen in Britain and Ireland so far, writes David Dickinson.

On that Market Rasen debut, Royal Irish Hussar didn’t jump a twig and it appeared to be his Flat class that got him home. An improved display followed at Wetherby under a more positive ride but Saturday’s Grade 2 JCB Triumph Trial Prestbury Hurdle at Cheltenham represented another step forward. In the first two throughout, his relentless galloping and unrecognisably slick jumping wore his rivals down one by one in a better time than the winner of a competitive handicap on the end of the previous day’s card.

I have settled on a rating of 147 for the winner with the Irish-trained Guitar Pete running to 141. The admirable Akdam, although in trouble some way from home, stuck to his guns and once again seems to have run his race. The disappointments Azza and Herod The Great looked to pay the price for trying to go with the winner. Royal Irish Hussar is now likely to steer clear of winter soft ground but given good health seems sure to be a major player in March’s Juvenile showpiece.

Been wondering about Ladbrokes standout 16s on royal Irish hussar. Aren't they the ones with line to Aidan O'Brien yard ? Is there a monster to be unleashed from Ballydoyle ?

First horse in the thread wins again

Gigginstown House Stud's first National Hunt filly Analifet confirmed the excellent impression she left on her Irish debut at Punchestown by impressively landing the Grade 3 Bar One Racing Juvenile 3-y-o Hurdle at Fairyhouse.
Backers of the 30/100 chance never had an anxious moment after Ruby Walsh's mount took the lead after Diesel Ten jumped left at the first.

The French-bred daughter of Califet extended away up the straight in tremendous fashion to account for her stable companion Noble Inn by six and a half lengths.

Clarcam, the other Gigginstown House Stud owned runner, the mount of Davy Russell, finished a further six lengths back in third.

Winning trainer Willie Mullins said: "It was a good performance and I was delighted with her. It was a quick time on quick ground and she's able to handle that.

"Soft ground won't be any barrier to her either.

"She did everything like a good mare and we'll probably look at Leopardstown at Christmas for her.

"It's going to be tough keeping the horses apart in the three-year-old department.

"I was particularly pleased with the runner-up (Noble Inn) who jumped a lot better today. He's going to improve more as he came from a flat yard.

"The ground was very quick for him and Paul (Townend) said he was going as fast as he could. As we move further into the winter the slower ground will suit him better."

Meanwhile Walsh reflected: "She is (a Triumph Hurdle horse) but I'd suppose the pity for me is that she won't have ten six every day which is just beyond Davy (Russell).

"You have to stay to win a Triumph and she does it the hard way – she gallops along in your hands but it seems there's loads left and stamina is not a problem for her.

"We went a real good gallop and she kept it up. She's a smashing filly and it's a good start to the day." (GC & EM)

Calipto made a highly proficient UK debut at Newbury, even if the second and third softened each other up by taking each other on. He fluffed the last but otherwise jumped well. Paul Nicholls sounded a word of warning about running horses without Flat experience in a race as demanding as the Triumph - a potential weakness that Nick Williams has cited with his past contenders. The upshot of this is: ante-post punters beware that the 2014 Chletenham Festival is not an overriding target.

That is a very likely engagement for the Willie Mullins-trained filly, Analifet, who enhanced her reputation with victory at Fairyhouse on Sunday. She is a deft jumper when she gets her hurdles right, wasting no time in the air and clocked a good time. Her shortened Cheltenham odds look fully justified.

Activial's performance in finishing second to Calipto should not be overlooked; he might have put up even more of a fight had he not been locked in a duel with Chocala from so far out. This was his hurdling debut and he's worth monitoring with half a mind on the Fred Winter

Analifet was impressive in the Bar One Racing Juvenile 3-Y-O Hurdle at Fairyhouse. She jumped well on Sunday. We went a really good gallop and you would want her to settle a bit better and hopefully she will in time. She jumped, she galloped and kept at it to win quite handsomely. *
The second horse, Noble Inn, is not a bad horse for Willie Mullins and will improve when the ground gets softer, but it was a very good performance from Analifet and you would have to say she is the best juvenile in Ireland now. There’s nothing to dislike about her, and watching her work at home she doesn’t lack speed either.
She’ll be getting 7lbs on the day in the Triumph Hurdle, and you’d imagine she will run at Christmas and back at Leopardstwon in early February. She’s 10-1 now for the race and will probably be 7-1 on the day.

                    Lydia

It was a great weekend all round for Gary and Jamie Moore. Violet Dancer kicked off their Friday Sandown double with a convincing win in the opening juvenile hurdle. The margin of his superiority would have been greater had he not over-jumped the second last and buckled slightly. His positive response to that mishap reflects well on both his attitude and ability.

Connections' view that he ideally needs some cut in the ground is off-putting for a target such as the Triumph. However, it makes his intended next start - Chepstow's Finale Hurdle - an appealing proposition as that race tends to be staged in deep ground. This horse, a half-brother to the stable's decent and perpetually unheralded Chris Pea Green, might be underestimated in a race like that and he shouldn't be.

                      More from Lydia

The most serious shake-up in the Festival's ante-post betting came in the Triumph as a result of what happened to hitherto-favourite Royal Irish Hussar in Doncaster's BetVictor Summit Juvenile Hurdle last Saturday.

He was beaten fair and square, just as winning trainer Nick Williams predicted. With a flourish of forthrightness, he had asserted on Friday that he would be "disappointed" if Fox Norton did not reverse his Market Rasen form with Royal Irish Hussar given his 8lb pull at the weights.

He was not disappointed: his previous conqueror proved no competition. Instead, it was another of John Ferguson's talented Darley recruits who gave him a fight.

Fox Norton may not race again until the Triumph, for which he would need to improve - but not out of all recognition - to play an active part in most renewals. The upsides are that his lightly-raced profile and Williams' modus operandi strongly indicate he is likely to progress. The downside is that, as Williams has pointed out many times before, a juvenile without experience of the Flat is at a disadvantage in the rough and tumble of a Triumph.

That theoretically makes runner-up Broughton a very interesting proposition. He was receiving 7lb from Fox Norton and, not surprisingly on his debut, wasn't as confident at his hurdles as the winner.

He is hardened from a Flat campaign under Mark Johnston, but even that trainer admitted Broughton's profile was patchy. The way the horse hung left under pressure and flashed his tail at Doncaster, with Denis O'Regan having delayed resort to the whip as long as possible, suggests he may not be straightforward. Stamina might also be an issue at more testing tracks.

It would be foolish utterly to dismiss Ballyglasheen's defeat of Kentucky Hyden at Cheltenham as form not worthy of a Festival race. The time for a three-year-old was comparatively good and he clearly improved for test of stamina that had been lacking in his past visits to Ludlow. The runner-up was conceding 4lb on the quickest ground he would have yet encountered in his short career. This race might be under-rated as a good Fred Winter indicator.

The third, Commissioned, was making his hurdling debut and would have been closer had his relatively inexperienced rider not made the tactically naïve move of trying to rob Barry Geraghty of the stands' rail.

That forced him to check and his horse to jump the final flight blind. Watch the slightly timid-looking Commissioned to see whether he builds on this experience next time. He is lightly raced and an interesting addition to Team Ferguson.

The £120,000 JCB Triumph Hurdle over two miles and a furlong is the highlight of the season for four-year-old hurdlers and was won in devastating fashion last year by Our Conor.

Among the 65 entries is Grade One winner Le Rocher (Nick Williams), Ivan Grozny (Willie Mullins), one of 24 Irish-trained entries, impressive Newbury winner Calipto (Paul Nicholls).

Ireland's champion Flat trainer Aidan O'Brien, who sent out the mighty Istabraq to win three Stan James Champion Hurdles, could be represented by Leopardstown scorer Plinth.
