    Twirling Magnet

Twirling Magnet looked good in winning the three-mile novices’ chase on Friday at Cheltenham. The Jonjo O’Neill-trained gelding was given a lovely ride by AP McCoy, held up out the back off what was quite a decent pace and creeping into the race steadily. Also, crucially, he impressed with his jumping, which he hasn’t always done in the past.

Travelling well setting off down the hill, the Imperial Ballet gelding improved between horses coming to the bottom of the hill, clearly going best. He was helped by Pantxoa’s mistake at the second last but, while he was still a couple of lengths down at the time, he was going better and probably would have come out on top anyway. He went on after the final fence and drew a few lengths clear, and he pricked his ears when he got to the front and looked around him a little up the hill, leaving the impression that he had at least a little more left to give. And the winning time was good, the fastest of the three chases run on the day by some way, and nearly nine seconds faster than the amateur riders’ handicap chase run over the same distance later on the card, in which admittedly the pace did collapse.

This was Twirling Magnet’s 10th chase, but he is only seven and he still has plenty of scope for progression. He can be quirky, he was tailed off on his previous run at Market Rasen, just three weeks earlier, but he is also talented when things drop his way. In that context, it is significant that he put up this performance, probably the best of his life, at Cheltenham on his first visit there. He goes well on good ground and he has been on the go through the summer, so, now that he has experience of Cheltenham and the ground is starting to change, it would not be surprising if Jonjo put him away before too long and trained him for the spring festivals. The JLT Specialty Handicap Chase back at Cheltenham in March is an obvious target. Interestingly, that is a race that the trainer has won twice in the last five years.

A 1lb hike for this looks lenient, it leaves him on a mark of 143, actually 1lb lower than the mark off which he raced in a good handicap chase at Newton Abbot during the summer. He may just be under-rated a little because he has been running through the summer, and he is one to keep in the back of your mind now for the spring.

                4. Cause Of Causes (Gordon Elliott)

Cause Of Causes holds no fewer than seven entries at the Festival, and he will be of interest in whichever race he contests.

JP McManus' horse was a seriously progressive hurdler throughout last season, and he is a similarly progressive chaser this term. Raised 4lb for going down narrowly to Sraid Padraig over two miles at Fairyhouse in November, he proved that he stayed three miles when he went down by a short head to Rockyaboya in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas Festival off a mark of 133.

He was raised 7lb for that, but that still leaves him on a mark of just 140, which is still 2lb lower than the mark off which he won the Ladbroke Hurdle at Ascot 14 months ago as a novice hurdler, and 7lb lower than his current mark over hurdles.

There is no reason to presume that he will not be as good over fences as over hurdles, so he could be a well-handicapped horse over fences. Also, as a six-year-old who has raced just seven times over fences, he still has scope for progression. He hasn't run since Christmas, he should be fresher than most going to the Festival, and he proved with his run in the Greatwood Hurdle at last season's November meeting that he could handle Cheltenham's undulations well.

                  Beverley Babe confirmed

Trainer Robert Tyner believes the likely fast pace will bring out the best in Byerley Babe as she prepares to line up in the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
A winner at Limerick and Thurles this season, the seven-year-old carries the colours of leading owner JP McManus and is bound for Prestbury Park.

She was narrowly beaten by Avondhu Lady in a valuable mares' prize at Naas in early February, but Tyner feels his charge deserves her place at the Festival.

He said: "We're looking forward to seeing her run and she's a mare who travels well in her races, so the good gallop they go in Cheltenham will suit her.

"The ground in Cheltenham does dry up quickly, which will be good for our mare as we'd like to see her run on a bit nicer ground.

"She just got a bit bogged down in Naas the last day, but she's been in good form since and we're happy with her."

Hopefully he's my best chance," said Longsdon.

"Going up to two and a half miles will be the best for him, he has an entry over three miles but the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase is the obvious chance for him."
