  • Another restricted account ?

When PP and Betfair merged it was within a matter of days before those with restricted accounts on one of these were informed it applied on both, so how long before we get the dreaded message from Skybet.

I came very close to putting a thread up on this earlier Redbridge now the merger has completed.
I’m not sure they can/will do this whilst there’s no racing on but there has to be a big danger those of us with Sky accs are one winner away from losing the account.
Just the way supposed bookmakers behave these days sadly...

Istabraq, those of us that have seen most aspects of racing pre betting shops and when they came along the gradual decline of being able to get on with the shop manager on the phone for 20 mins enquiring if he should accept the bet and then offering a tenth of the wager with the offering of the rest at SP.
It made me go racing a lot more to see the differing prices available on-course 100/8 100/7 100/6 and general 4-1 shots being available at 5s or even 11/2 on the back of the line.

And so I frequented the shops less and less and the best time of all came along with modern media and the shops and the rails becoming obsolete and now we can hardly get on, not just backing winners but being on the right side of the eventual SP.

I remember backing one at 7s on the Tuesday and it went off at less than 3s if I remember rightly, this was the Newmarket July meeting run on the Thursday, just my own opinion and it came 3rd and I did my money, but next day I got the dreaded email, Sorry but no more concessions, OK I can live without best odds but little did I realise this meant restricted wagers also without them spelling this out in the email.

My mate is part of a fairly successful golf syndicate, yes Golf, 160 runners and he is restricted to 87p instead of the intended 40-60 quid he wanted, now horses and dogs could be hiding their true handicap mark but Golfers !!!

And so we are reduced to just enjoying our sports because refusing to be restricted and referred to the idiots that posted the book in the first place are now getting punter opinion for free.

I suffered a moderate loss at Cheltenham without getting a run for my money only the second time in ten years and they had all the bankers onside in their favour and the Triumph book was a punter wipe-out and then they want to restrict accounts when punters take a few quid back.

There has been a sad decline in bookmaking over the years but in many respects it’s the concessions that cost them money so removing them I don’t have an issue with, but, like you no doubt, being told you can only have 90p on a 10/1 shot is where they embarrass themselves and the likes of 365, Fred, Sportsbook, Paddys etc should all be ashamed of themselves.

Until the lockdown I was going racing 4/5 times a month and if you’re sensible by splitting your bets across a couple of bookies you can get what you want on without restriction, of course you don’t get BOG and you can’t have multiples, but you get on (singles) and it’s a great day out.

I hoped when the crackhead machines got restricted bookies would start behaving like proper bookies again, not sure this is happening but racecourse (until the lockdown) were very much open for business...
