West Wizard: Henderson Horse to follow

    West Wizard (FR)
    Age: 4 (Foaled February 16th, 2009)
    Sex: Bay Gelding
    Breeding: King's Theatre - Queen's Diamond (Konigsstuhl)
    Trainer: N J Henderson
    Owner: Walters Plant Hire Ltd

    Before winning Kempton Bumper yesterday..

I get good messages for my final ride of the day, WEST WIZARD in the 32Red Casino Maiden NH Flat Race (5.40). Nicky often runs a nice horse in this race and won it a year ago with Minella Forfitness.

WEST WIZARD is a horse I’m mad about, a gorgeous one for the future that showed a glimpse of what he’s capable of winning the bumper.

West Wizard is one of the nice ones and we think a lot of him at home so it was nice to see him come to the track and do it. Hes a very exciting prospect and we might look at the Aintree bumper or something similar.

Nicky Henderson's string are in fantastic shape at the moment - a fact underlined by his four winners at the Cheltenham Festival - and he introduced another promising recruit when West Wizard made a successful debut in the bumper that closed Kempton's card on 16 March. This son of King's Theatre scored by six lengths from The Pirate's Queen, travelling beautifully before easing into the lead with two furlongs left, and must have a bright future. He is bred to stay more than two miles over hurdles.

“Is a nice type who seems to be improving all the time and is well worth his place in the bumper at the end of the card on Saturday.”

    Makes Howard's six to follow

    West Wizard - Nicky Henderson:
He was very well backed on debut and he didn’t disappoint. Time will tell how good a race it was but the second and the third have won since.
Nicky Henderson’s yard had 23 bumper winners last season and to my eye this looks the pick of the crop.
Presumably he will go novice hurdling and looks a really good prospect.
Of the six I have suggested he would probably be the one I would pick out.

Bought for €55,000 as a yearling, this son of King’s Theatre comes from a smart German family on his dam’s side. He is a half-brother to Grade 3 winning hurdler in Italy Quirino, dual Listed winner/Group 2 placed flat horse Quadrupa and to Listed bumper winner Quartano, who is also a dual hurdle winner. He was a very impressive winner on his only start to date when bolting up in soft ground at Kempton, travelling noticeably well throughout before easing clear in the final furlong. The second and third have won since and the manner in which he brushed them aside bodes well. Henderson usually has plenty of strength in the novice hurdle division and this one could well find himself near the top of the pecking order judged on that effort.

“Precocious for a horse of his build and seriously impressive. Has returned looking even bigger and better. Exciting for novice hurdles.”
