I’m on J P McManus's second string in the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase (2.40), QUANTITATIVEEASING with A P going for Nadiya De La Vega but I’m hopeful of a decent performance.

I’d have been happier if the ground had been better because those conditions are suit him. But he does seem to be coming to himself and he has now dropped to 1lb lower than when we were last successful.

Like all the races here, this is extremely hard to call and I’d have respect for Our Mick who might be on a very handy mark.

A typically competitive Festival handicap chase, with Dessie Hughes’ White Star Line the more likely of our two raiders.

He remains a maiden over fences but he finished runner-up to Hunt Ball in a novice chase at this meeting in 2012 and looks quite well treated here.

Paul Gilligan’s Jadanli is 14lbs higher than when winning the Thyestes Chase at Gowran in January and may need to improve again to cope with the rise.

Best of the Irish: White Star Line

My other ride on the first day is Cloudy Too in the JLT Specialty Chase for Sue Smith.

He was very impressive when I won him last time at Haydock on soft ground when he defied an eight-pound penalty so again, the going will not be a problem for him.

He steps in trip to three miles and I think we will see more improvement as it will suit him better as he won at Haydock with a bit in hand.

He has gone up another nine pounds and that is pretty harsh on him from the handicapper so he does have to improve - but at the same time, he is an unexposed horse who looks on the upgrade.

He seemed a very straightforward ride and you just need some luck in running in a big field.

Only two winning favourites since 1977.
Since and including 1999 82 horses have tried to carry 11 stone or more, Bensalem broke the run in 2011 and became the only winner with such a burden. The others have achieved five seconds, six thirds and five fourth-placed finishes.
Seven of the last ten winners had finished in the first three on their previous start.
Horses aged 11 or older have failed to reach the frame from 40 runners since 1997.
Since 2000 only two winners were aged ten or over
The last six winners had had no more than four runs that season.
Paul Carberry has ridden the winner twice.
