    Oscara Dara

Oscara Dara put up a most impressive performance in winning the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday. The Nicky Henderson-trained gelding travelled really well the whole way for Barry Geraghty, and he moved easily in behind the leaders as they neared the end of the back straight, despite the fact that he had forsaken ground by going wide the whole way. A mistake at the third last flight didn’t help, but he was still travelling like by far the most likely winner around the home turn. Once over the second last flight, Geraghty asked him to lengthen, and he picked up impressively, coming right away from his pursuers on the run to the last. A bad stumble on landing over the final flight halted his momentum, and he looked in trouble for a second or two as Romeo Americo and Buck Magic closer and his rider tried to kick-start him again, but he did get going again, and he came away to win well.

The fact that the son of Oscar was able to get going again on this dead ground, after he had lost all momentum on landing over the last, gives an indication of the amount that he had left to give. The handicapper has raised him 14lb to a mark of 154, which appears harsh on the face of it, given that he is eight years old. However, this was just his seventh race ever, and just his fourth over hurdles, so he still has loads of potential for progression over hurdles, now that his chasing career has been put on hold. He almost certainly won with a lot more in hand than the bare winning margin, and he can progress again. The Coral Cup is the obvious race for him at the Cheltenham Festival – he handles good ground as well – but he may not be that far off graded class.

"He's in this weekend at Exeter but I haven't spoken to JP McManus or (racing manager) Frank Berry yet. I think he might wait and go to Ascot the following week instead," Longsdon said.

"He's not entered in the novice races at Cheltenham but he might go for the Coral Cup."

The thorny subject of Irish-trained runners’ handicap marks in Britain has again reared its head after Paul Nolan expressed his disappointment with the assessment of his Coral Cup hope Noble Prince.
The Montjeu gelding provided the Co. Wexford handler with his second Festival winner at Prestbury Park two years ago when taking the Jewson Novices’ Chase but the discrepancy in ratings between the Irish and English handicapper has surprised Nolan.

The Enniscorthy trainer said, “He’s in good form and the plan is to go for the Coral Cup but I couldn’t believe he’s got an English mark over hurdles of 153. He was only 144 the last time he ran over hurdles in Ireland (three years ago).

“He’s only run once in a handicap hurdle and that was in the County Hurdle off a mark of 146 (when fifth to Thousand Stars in 2010).”

The nine-year-old, who has a definite preference for good ground, has just run once this season when down the field behind For Non Stop in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree in October.

However Nolan is not worried by the absence from the track saying, “He’ll go to Cheltenham now without another run but we will probably bring him to the Curragh for a day out.”

    Pendra: Charlie Longsdon

"Pendra worked in Lambourn (on Tuesday morning) and he went very well,"

"I hope he'll be spot-on for a handicap at the Festival.

"I'd like to go for the Coral Cup but it depends what else Mr McManus has for that race.

"All he does is stay - everything he has done over two miles has been a bonus, so two-five should suit.

"The ground has been slowing everything down this winter which has been a bonus.

"I think he's well handicapped on 139 as Melodic Rendezvous is now 150 and it wasn't as if he beat us by 10 lengths, it was just over four (lengths).

"He's only had three runs over hurdles and we decided against another run for him to save his mark.

"AP (McCoy) has been and ridden him and he likes him.

"I think he's my best chance of the week."

    Morning Glory
Mr Watson is another with few miles on the clock, and O'Neill again sounds disposed to go up in distance, for the Coral Cup, rather than stay at two miles in the County. "We have been trying to teach him to settle a bit," he said. "He's getting the hang of it now, and you don't usually have too much of a problem holding on to them round here."
