    OLBG Mares Hurdle 2013

    Entries 2013

Quevega heads 36 entries for the £85,000 Grade 2 OLBG Mares' Hurdle on Champion Day, Tuesday, March 12. The Willlie Mullins-trained nine-year-old is bidding to become only the second horse to win a race at the Festival on five occasions following Golden Miller, who captured the Cheltenham Gold Cup five times between 1932 and 1936.

Her main dangers this year may come from her own stable, with Mullins also being responsible for Grade 3 scorers Tarla and Zuzka. Nicky Henderson has entered top-class French import Utopie Des Bordes and last season's Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle winner Une Artiste, who is unbeaten this term, while Emma Lavelle could be represented by Cleeve Hurdle third Kentford Grey Lady.

    Class 1, Grade 2, £85,000 Total prize fund, 4.40pm, Tuesday, March 12th, 2013. 2m. 4f. Fillies and Mares only.

    Once she doesnt duck out...

    Timeform 1-2-3
    1 Knockfierna (IRE)
    2 Kells Belle (IRE)
    3 Kaffie

    Timeform view

Kells Belle was on the up when last seen in the spring and is sure to go well, but she might just find the concession of 8 lb to former Grade 2 hurdle winner/smart chaser Knockfierna beyond her. Kaffie has the potential for better still this term and is another who should go well in what is a competitive race of its type.

    First time travelling too...

THE engimatic Knockfierna has her first start in Britain this afternoon at Kempton, with trainer Charles Byrnes hopeful the mare can return to form in the Listed OLB Mares' Hurdle.

The seven-year-old has won at Grade 2 level when previously hurdling, and switches back from fences having finished sixth on her last start at Clonmel.

However, Knockfierna has run out twice in her last six starts, both times at Limerick when in contention at the finish.

Byrnes acknowledged that she has become slightly quirky, as he said: "Knockfierna settled in well on Saturday evening at the track. She's become a small bit unpredictable and it all depends what side of the bed she got out of. I know she was badly hampered at Clonmel but she wasn't jumping at all before that. We decided then that she needs to go back over hurdles and this looks a nice enough race to do that in."

In a competitive race, Nicky Henderson is chasing a third straight victory, with Kells Belle favourite for the race.

    Well done gents.

Got to be an angle on this race now. Must be at least a 50 50 that Quevega goes to the World Hurdle so opens it up for a new winner. Voler La Vedette being redirected to this seems obvious but seem bits on twitter about Mullins having lost of other talented Mares...anyone got an insight into the yard ?

Emma Lavelle expects Kentford Grey Lady to revert to the mares' division come the Cheltenham Festival.

Good enough to finish second to Quevega in the last David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle, the sturdy seven-year-old took a Sandown handicap in December and was a respectable third behind Reve De Sivola and Oscar Whisky in Saturday's Cleeve Hurdle.

"She ran an absolute blinder," said the trainer.

"Although she would improve a bit on that, and on better ground, probably the same could be said for everyone else so I think she will probably go for the David Nicholson again.

"She might be chasing home Quevega again, although there's always hope she will beat her. I think we might have one more run in the Rendlesham at Haydock and then make a final decision."

The Mares race at the Festival is usually really uncompetitive and the news that Unaccompanied (7/1) runs is a pleasant surprise. I head to the bar when the silly cross country race is on and the prospect of Dermot Weld’s mare taking on Quevega will get me back out into the stands. Unaccompanied won an open Grade 1 hurdle over 2m (beating Thousand Stars in the Istabraq) last season and stays well enough on the flat (close 3rd on heavy ground in a 1m6f listed contest in the summer) to suggest the 2m4f trip, at a mares’ gallop, should be well within range.

Quevega is a top class mare but she’s 9 now and even Willie Mullins’ genius at getting her to win this without a run can’t go on forever. Quevega has only 4lb in hand on RPRs and with 6 year old Unaccompanied possessing the better turn of foot, 4/6 and 7/1 doesn’t reflect their chances in what’s close to a match on all known form.

    Unaccompanied a NR:

    Dermot Weld

"Unfortunately, she won't be going to Cheltenham,"

"She's pulled a muscle ever so slightly and it will mean a week to 10 days' rest. She'd been in great form and it (the setback) is only ever so slight.

"She may run next back on the Flat in Listed class in late March, early April."

The Mares' Hurdle can go to the Willie Mullins trained Quevega for the fifth time. She has won this race for the last four years and had the option of World Hurdle. She looks on course for a five-timer but isn't any sort of price. The best bet may be Kentford Grey Lady each-way. Emma Lavelle's runner was second in this race last year and is fancied to run well again.

Nicky Henderson will be hoping last year's Fred Winter winner Une Artiste can run a big race too. She comes here having won two Listed mares' races and is playing for minor honours here.
