Change of plan for Kashmir Peak

Triumph Hurdle contender Kashmir Peak will bypass an engagement in Wednesday's 32Red.com Juvenile Hurdle at Doncaster and head straight to next month's Cheltenham Festival.
The four-year-old was last seen unseating Dougie Costello at Musselburgh's Cheltenham Trials Meeting when the horse seemed to stumble after clearing a flight in the back straight.
Winner of a Grade Two heat at Doncaster in December, Kashmir Peak had been set to shoulder top weight back on Town Moor this week, but trainer John Quinn has decided a final prep run is not necessary.
"It was clear that he didn't fall at Musselburgh, we all saw that. If he had then we may have needed to get a run into him," said Quinn.
"But he's a very straightforward horse and we've done plenty of schooling with him. His work is very good and we are happy enough to go straight to Cheltenham
"If there's nice ground, we would expect him to run a big race."
Kashmir Peak is as low as 12-1 for the Triumph with William Hill while Our Conor and Rolling Star lead the ante-post lists.

Henderson on Vasco Du Ronceray and Courtesy Call.

"I want to get a run into them both, and they are both in the Triumph,Courtesy Call is a good horse and just I haven't been able to run him. He isn't very big but he jumps very well. He had a busy Flat campaign and has to have good ground, so there was no point in asking him to do anything in that (soft) ground."

        Nicholls on Irish Saint.

"The idea was to go Kempton and then Aintree but if he won and was impressive, then he could still go (to Cheltenham),"

No pint in an adonis thread now...Barry G

My first of the day is VASCO DU RONCERAY (2.05). in the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle and I see him as being on something of a recovery mission. He hasn’t quite lived up to expectation in his last two runs when he was second then third at Cheltenham and Doncaster respectively.

He does have potential and I was pleased enough with him when we were second to Far West at Cheltenham in November. He didn’t get the greatest of runs when he was beaten last time at Doncaster and he’s certainly worth another chance.

But this is stiff opposition and I’d have respect for Paul Nicholls’ runner Irish Saint who was outpaced by our Triumph contender Rolling Star at Cheltenham last time and there's no disgrace in that because it rode a very good race, although he now has to give 3lb to my lad who I’m hopeful will produce the class we think he has.

^ more on this catching pigeons

Barry Geraghty chooses Vasco De Ronceray ahead of stablemate Courtesy Call in the Racing UK Subscribe For Cheltenham Adonis Juvenile Hurdle but there isn't much between them. The former wasn't right last time having given Far West a good race first time out for the yard, but the latter has schooled well.

"I would presume he'll go for the Triumph as he would have a lot of weight in the Fred Winter," Charles O'Brien after Stocktons Wing won at fairyhouse.

                    Mordin

IRISH SAINT (37) is a horse that's built and bred for at least two and a half miles. So he's not having an easy time of things in juvenile hurdles which are restricted to shorter distances. He showed this when under pressure from a long way out in the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton. He looked to have little chance turning in. But he eventually pulled himself into the race then used his stamina to wear away at a persistent rival to score.

If the photo hadn't gone against Well Chief seven of the last fifteen Adonis winners to run in the Triumph Hurdle would have scored. But I think trainer Paul Nicholls was right to suggest he'll probably be sidestepping Cheltenham with Irish Saint and saving him for the two and a half miler against older novices at Aintree. That will give him time to recover from a hard race and the right distance to race over.

Most likely we won't see the best of Irish Saint till he tackles fences next season. However he should improve over the longer trip at Aintree and must have some sort of shot there.

Runner up VASCO DU RONCERAY (37) travelled really well for a long way and looked the winner. He showed how much he'd been able to keep in reserve when quickly pulling clear of the rest in his efforts to hold off the winner. He's run big in all his seven starts to date and looks to be improving. He had an easier race than the winner here and I wouldn't discount his chances of taking the Triumph.

Third placed L'UNIQUE (33) had impressed when winning by eight lengths over the course and distance last time. But that was on soft ground. She's built for two and a half miles plus and fences. Here the fast ground seemed to find her out over two miles. After making the running she got badly outpaced by the first two and wasn't pushed that hard once they got away from her.

One impressive aspect of L'Unique's performance here was how well she jumped. She dragged her back legs through the first when the pace was really slow. But when she kicked on down the far side and had more momentum she was really flying the jumps. She will surely be switched to chasing next year when her stamina, size and jumping ability will stand her in good stead. Meanwhile it looks like she needs soft ground to be effective over the short distances juvenile hurdles are run.

Dreams of saddling a winner at next month’s Cheltenham Festival could soon turn into reality for Newmarket trainer John Ryan.

The Moulton Road handler, who is better known for his exploits on the Flat, has confirmed that both Somemothersdohavem and Masters Blazing are to be aimed at the JCB Triumph Hurdle after the pair opened their accounts over hurdles last week.

“For a small yard like ours it is difficult enough to get one runner into a race like the Triumph Hurdle, so to have two is fantastic,” said Ryan.

“Both sets of owners are very keen for their horses to go there and now it is all systems go.”

While it was a case of going one better for Somemothersdohavem at Doncaster on Wednesday, Masters Blazing’s victory 48 hours later came at the first time of asking with the four year old making the perfect debut at Warwick.

“Somemothersdohavem was a fair second first time out at Market Rasen where the track was probably a bit too tight for him,” said Ryan.

“During his win last week he managed to turn over a good one from Tim Vaughan’s yard which was a good effort.

“The quicker surface at Doncaster probably done him some good last time as it just helped get his jumping in order,

“As for Masters Blazing we gave him a run at Lingfield on the all-weather earlier in the month just to see where he was fitness-wise. He needed that run to put him straight.

“We were confident of a good run at Warwick and in the end he won quite impressively.”

Two elements that Ryan believes will not inconvenience either of the four year olds, should they make the line-up for the prestigious Grade One contest next month, is the big field they are likely to encounter and the state of the ground.

“Both horses won’t mind the big field as they have had plenty of experience from racing in them on the Flat,” said Ryan. “They have both run on all types of ground so it shouldn’t matter what it is as Cheltenham.

“The only thing I would say though is that Masters Blazing would probably prefer it if it remained on the soft side.”

Despite Somemothersdohavem trading at around the 50/1-mark and Masters Blazing the 100/1-mark with many leading betting firms for the two-mile contest, the Cadland Stables handler feels that there is not much to choose between the pair.

“They are both pretty similar horses and they are hard to split,” said Ryan.

“If anything Somemothersdohavem probably has more stamina having won over two miles on the Flat, while Masters Blazing would probably have that bit more speed and turn of foot being he is a winning miler.

“On the day the one who will succeed will be which ever one can manage to get that little bit of luck in running and put in the clearest round.”

PRICE After 4 years when none of the first four home started bigger than 20/1, bookies strike back with Countrywide Flame, a 33/1 winner. However only 10 placed horses in past 16 races to have started at greater than 20/1. C Flame, the firstrst winner over 20/1 since Duke Of Monmouth ‘92. Before that and since introduction of the Fred Winter all seven winners came from the first four in the betting.

TRAINERS N Henderson has won 5 of these and had a 3rd place in 2011. (no runner 2012). A King, two winners, two seconds and two thirds in the last 7 (Grumeti 5/1 fav 3rd 2012). P. Hobbs - two winners in last 9. Pipe stable - This race provided Martin with his first Festival winner in Baron Blakeney 1981 at 66/1. Only Kissair '95 has given success since. Only three runners in the last 8 all unplaced. Have tended recently to aim at the 4 yr old handicap.

FORM RACES Katchit broke the big stat in this completing the first Wragge & Co. Finesse Hurdle (now known as JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial)/Triumph double since former’s inception in 1985. Franchoek won the Wragge '08 but beaten by Celestial Halo in the big one. This year's incumbent - Rolling Star won from Irish Saint the pair a mile clear. Last Haydock Victor Ludorum winner to be involved in the finish was Ninja, 2nd at 50/1 in ’90. But Une Artiste doubled up with the 4 yr old handicap last year. Only Orsenfoolsies

Last to do Chepstow Finale G1 double Mysilv '94 Ruacana Some might say lucky. Swnymor fell at the last hampering Megalypsos

Well fancied mares’ decent record with 5lb allowance. (Shawiya, Mysilv and Snowdrop). 16 have started 14/1 and under. Above 3 won and 6 others were placed (Unaccompanied 2nd in 2011). 37 others 14/1 and greater, none placed. No mares last year. L'Unique
6 from last 12 won Adonis Hurdle at Kempton (including Zarkandar and Soldatino). 6 didn’t. Irish Saint

Winner of Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham in November has provided a placed horse in this in 4 of the past 7 seasons. Grandouet placed in both in 2011. 'Pistolet Noir NR in '10 but Barizan was second in both races. Hinterland NR last year. Far West

Countrywide Flame and Katchit both broke another long term stat in that they have been the only two of the last 17 to have run over hurdles in Britain or Ireland before October 20th. Flame had actually been out twice by that date. Zarkardar followed Soldatino in that their first run in UK was the Kempton Adonis at the end of February. This broke the stat that, all 37 in the previous 11 races who made their hurdle debut later than January did not win. But both had ran in France.

PRICE 18 of last 20 were favourite or second favourite last time out (not Snowdrop or Zarkandar).

Only 4 from the last 25 Triumph Hurdle favourites have won (Last 2 to do so Detroit City '06, Katarino '99).

FORM Zarkandar, Made In Japan ’04 and Celestial Halo '08 only winners since ‘90 not to have won twice that season over hurdles. Latter pair were no worse than 2nd last time out.

16 from last 19 won previous race. Three were second and Countrywide Flame finished 3rd in G1 at Leopardstown.

19 from last 20 either unbeaten in UK and Ire or ran at least 3 times previous (Not Celestial who had only ran twice was 2nd last time in an all age novice). 24 from last 28 had between 2 and 6 previous runs that season. (Zarkandar had 3 flat runs in France, Countrywide Flame had 6 hurdle outings before Cheltenham)

18 of past 19 had passed the post first in at least half their hurdle starts in UK and Ire. (Not Made In Japan, one from three, Scolardy had been disqualified from 1st last time).

The last 15 winners to have run on the flat all tried at distances of 1m 4f plus (including Zarkandar). 14 of last 20 were placed over 1 1/2 miles or further on the flat (including six from the last seven).

14 of past 18 had won on a 'fast flat' track e.g. Kempton. Countrywide Flame at Market Rasen Irish Saint

All bar Katchit and Zaynar of last 19 had previous run in February. They both last ran in January. Last 14 all ran between 19 and 55 days before.

Irish trained - 4 out of first 5 home in 2002 (Scolardy) but little since. Irish trained have only ever won 4 Triumph Hurdles. '07 Won In The Dark first to be placed for 4 then Mourad 3rd in '09. '10 Alavain 3rd and Carlito Brigante 4th, the market leaders. 2011 Unaccompanied 3rd at 11/2. 2012 Hisabbaat 2nd for DK Weld at 20s from 5 triers. Our Conor

Three Irish trained winners since ’93. Scolardy ’02 and Commanche Court ‘97 both in first two of the Grade 3 event at Punchestown in January. Diakali finished miles ahead.
BREEDING - 13 from last 16 bred by a Group 1 winning sire including all of last eleven bar Soldatino. His sire Graveron never won a race.

RATING 55 of last 64 win and placed rated at least 70 on the flat. All last year over 80. Five recently were French NH and Flat without a rating, but Unaccompanied was rated 98, '10 Barizan was rated 86 and Alavan 110. '09 Mourad 3rd was 104. ’08 all three passed this one, '07 lowest rated of the first four home was Punjabi at 75. One winner since '96 (Spectroscope) rated less than 80 on the flat.

HEADGEAR - Only Zaynar (cheekpieces) and Detroit City (visor) of the last 25 to try over 10 years have won. Both were wearing headgear in NH races for the first time although Detroit City had won in a visor on the flat as a three yr old.

Paul Nicholls' prospects have been well documented elsewhere, but the Pigeon will only add that those at the yard believe they have Rolling Star well covered with Far West in the Triumph Hurdle on a line through Irish Saint.

Far West brings a similarly convincing set of credentials to the Triumph Hurdle. Unbeaten since joining Paul Nicholls, he has won twice around Cheltenham and last time out showed a surprising turn of foot off a slow pace at Ascot.

River Maigue didn’t advertise the bare form in the Supreme and Irish hopes of Triumph success were boosted by Flaxen Flare’s Fred Winter success on Wednesday.

Our Conor has been the outstanding Irish four-year-old so far and represents a serious chance, although whether or not Diakali deserves to be three times Our Conor’s price is another matter.

Ruby Walsh, though, hasn’t hesitated and has plumped for Far West. That’s no bad recommendation.

Our Conor outclassed his rivals with a scintillating display in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
The Dessie Hughes-trained son of Jeremy had headed the market ever since recording an impressive victory in the Spring Hurdle at Leopardstown but was easy to back on the day as the money poured in for favourite Rolling Star.
Diakali, second to Our Conor last time, set out to make the running, in front of the eventual winner, Far West and Rolling Star with the market leaders all towards the head of affairs.
David Casey stretched his advantage on the rising ground but the field had closed right up by the time they started to come down the hill with none going more easily than Bryan Cooper and Our Conor.
A flick of the reins took him to the front to and left his rivals immediately floundering in his wake as he eased clear to record a remarkable 15-length success without being asked for maximum effort.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Far West was the horse to chase him home from stablemate Sametegal with Diakali rallying to gain fourth as Rolling Star had no more to offer on the climb to the line.
Cooper said: "I've never had a feeling like that before in my life, I was there a mile too soon. I sat for as long as I could but nothing could come with me.
