    Barry G

ROLLING STAR ATR Tracker left me with a very favourable impression after winning the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham on Saturday. I’d liked what he’d shown in work and although he was a bit novicey he still jumped well enough. Another run won’t do him any harm and although he coped with the ground he gave me the impression he’d be better suited by something better.

He’s definitely a horse for the future. I Like him.

This race on Hennessy day should sort the Irish out. Think both of Willies are very good,

Tanya tipped up one of John Quinns but which one ?

John Quinn is hopeful Kashmir Peak can further enhance his Triumph Hurdle claims by completing a hat-trick at Musselburgh on Sunday.

Triumph Hurdle. Click here to bet.

Kashmir Peak in winning form at Doncaster
A decent horse for Ger Lyons on the Flat, the four-year-old has made an excellent start to his career over obstacles, impressing on debut at Market Rasen before claiming a Grade Two prize at Doncaster.

Quinn saddled last year's Triumph Hurdle hero Countrywide Flame and believes Kashmir Peak measures up well ahead of his run in this weekend's John Smith's Scottish Triumph Hurdle Trial.

"He's in good fettle and he'll probably go to Musselburgh at the weekend I think," said the North Yorkshire-based trainer.

"We think he's a fair horse. There are a lot of good horses around and the Triumph Hurdle is a difficult race to win, but we like this lad a lot.

"I suppose he's comparable to Countrywide Flame last year in that they both have Graded form and they are two tough horses. We'll know more after he runs this weekend."

Kashmir Peak is not the only smart juvenile hurdler Quinn has in his care, with both Doncaster scorer Calculated Risk and runaway Wetherby winner Hidden Justice also held in high regard.

They too could come into the reckoning for the Triumph, depending how they perform in the next week to 10 days.

"Calculated Risk is a nice horse as well and the plan is for him to go to Huntingdon next week. Hidden Justice will run at either Catterick or Sandown this week," said Quinn.

"They'll all be entered in the Triumph Hurdle, I think they're all fair horses who should win their fair share of races."

Kashmir Peak is a best priced 16-1 for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, with Calculated Risk and Hidden Justice both available at 33-1.

              JCB Triumph Hurdle – Analysis

The JCB Triumph Hurdle is the highlight of the season for four-year-old hurdlers and 58 entries have been received for the two-mile contest which takes place on Gold Cup Day, Friday, March 15.

Nicky Henderson has the best record of any trainer, saddling five winners since 1985, and this year the Lambourn handler has five contenders headed by Rolling Star. The French import made an exciting British debut when readily dispatching of Irish Saint in the Grade Two JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham on Festival Trials Day, January 26. Henderson’s other possibles are Alexandre Six, Courtesy Call, Megalypos and Vasco Du Ronceray.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has assembled a good team of juveniles this term headed by dual Cheltenham winner Far West and Irish Saint. The former has won his three starts in Britain by an aggregate of just under 13 lengths. Nicholls is also responsible for Listed scored Sametegal, Brinestine, Caid Du Berlais and Lac Fontana.

John Quinn captured last season’s JCB Triumph Hurdle with Countrywide Flame and the Malton handler’s three possibles this year are Kashmir Peak, who won a Grade Two contest a Doncaster decisively on December 15, Calculated Risk and impressive
Wetherby winner Hidden Justice. Swnymor could be Tim Vaughan’s best chance of a Festival winner yet after making an
eye-catching start to his hurdling career. Formerly trained by William Haggas, he won nicely on his hurdling debut at Newbury before crashing out at the last when looking the likely winner of the Grade One Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow.
That race went the way of John Ferguson’s Ruacana, who had also scored comfortably on debut at Catterick.

Alan King has done well with his juvenile hurdlers in the past and has four JCB Triumph Hurdle contenders this year with the most accomplished of his quartet being the filly, L’Unique. She won a Listed race by 12 lengths her British debut before an equally
comfortable success at Kempton Park on January 12, while stable companions King Of Dudes and Seventh Sign have won juvenile hurdles at Ludlow and Newbury respectively.

Our Conor, trained by Dessie Hughes, heads 15 Irish entries after easy wins in a maiden hurdle at Navan and a Grade Three at Fairyhouse in early December. Irish champion Jump trainer Willie Mullins is responsible for seven entries including dual
              winners Diakali and Blood Cotil.

                Good write up Vic.

I'm totally sold on Far West he looks an awesome prospect and could be the best hurdler yet to come out of Ditchat.

He messed about in that 2/3 horse affair last time but you could still see he has it all. He'll get plenty of company at Cheltenham to keep his mind on the job and I reckon he'll win with his head in his chest.

Rolling Star wouldn't be the best novice to come out of Seven Barrows but he's still a very good horse. Irish Saint really made things easy for him though in what was really a match and I don't think he's anywhere near as good as Far West.

Welcome to The Judge. Think Nicholls got surprised by Rolling Star last week...bit about it here http://www.fatjockey.com/forum/showt...umph-favourite

This is a fascinating stat from Donn McClean

                  Aga Khan Triumph

Diakali was deservedly fast-tracked towards the top of the Triumph Hurdle market with a thoroughly impressive performance in winning the Grade 3 juvenile hurdle at Punchestown last Saturday.

The Willie Mullins-trained gelding’s jumping wasn’t flawless, and he was out to his right at one or two of his obstacles, but it can’t have been easy for him, making all the running on just his second run over hurdles. He only had three rivals to beat, but runner-up Flaxen Flare looked useful when he won the Paddy Power three-year-old maiden at Leoapardstown’s Christmas Festival, a race that is already working out well, and Diakali came away from him fairly easily around the home turn, clocking a useful time in winning, despite the fact that he was eased down late on.

Interestingly, Diakali is an Aga Khan-bred gelding, his dam was a Group 3 winner over a mile and a half and, as such, he is of automatic interest for the Triumph Hurdle, a race that habitually places high stamina demands on the juveniles, despite the fact that it is run over the minimum trip.

In the last four years, eight Aga Khan-bred horses have lined up in the Triumph Hurdle: Zaynar (who won), Mourad (who finished third behind Zaynar), Simarian (7th), Ebadiyan (ran out at the second last when still in front), Barizan (second), Alaivan (third), Zarkandar (won) and Darroun (13th).

So from just eight representatives among a total of 78 runners in the Triumph Hurdle in the last four years, HH The Aga Khan Studs have provided two winners, a second, two thirds, and one horse who would surely have been involved but for that mis-hap at the second last. That’s a fairly remarkable record.

                      ^ timeform on that

Our Conor maintained his unbeaten record over jumps to emerge as Ireland's leading Triumph Hurdle candidate with a convincing victory in the opening Spring Juvenile Hurdle. A straightforward sort, Our Conor loomed up to tackle the pace-setting Diakali early in the straight and was soon in command, only needing to be kept up to his work to win by five lengths. Diakali's jumping again left a bit to be desired, but he still managed to finish over four lengths clear of the third-placed Ruacana with Blood Cotil, who didn't really take the eye beforehand, a further half a length back in fourth.*

                        Mordin

OUR CONNOR JUST HAS TO WIN THE TRIUMPH AFTER THIS HUGE RUN

OUR CONNOR (41) earned the biggest speed rating I've given a juvenile hurdler since Detroit City when demolishing his rivals to take the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown by five lengths. The strong, good-bodied gelding was moving a lot better than his rivals from a long way out and cruised clear to win comfortably.

There aren't many juvenile hurdlers that have as good a physique for jumping as Our Connor has. And it's been a long time since we saw one run as fast.

For comparison Champagne Fever completed the last two miles of the Grade 1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle 2.26 seconds slower than Our Connor, and Champagne Fever was not running slow.

I have a hard time seeing how anything can beat Our Connor in the Triumph following this huge run. He's hosed up in all three of his starts over timber and had the juvenile who'd previously earned the biggest speed rating from me this season over nine lengths back in third.

Runner up DIAKALI (39) is fast enough to win almost any Triumph Hurdle on my ratings. But after setting a strong gallop he was easily outrun by the winner from the last. He had romped home in his previous two hurdles outings and looks well capable of winning a Grade 1 juvenile hurdle.

Third placed RUACANA (37) was outrun by the first two and struggled to take third on the run in until his stamina seemed to kick in. He's more of a nippy Aintree sort than the first two so I don't see him as a serious threat in the Triumph. Seeing that he stayed two miles on the flat and kept on so strongly after undergoing a long hard drive I'd say he'll improve over two and a half miles plus when he gets the chance to go that far.

Fourth placed BLOOD COTIL (37) only just lost a lengthy duel for third with Ruacana. He'd won a Grade 2 on his previous start and is clearly useful. He'd have a shot in the Triumph in a normal year.

Rolling Star wouldn't be the best novice to come out of Seven Barrows but he's still a very good horse. Irish Saint really made things easy for him though in what was really a match and I don't think he's anywhere near as good as Far West.
Looks like you made a good call there The Judge. Thought he showed plenty of toe yesterday.

I’m not a big fan of the triumph hurdle. Just not enough form in the book to draw solid conclusions like there would be with older horses. In general when I see a 4yo race on a card I usually just skim through it without digging too deep for a bet but this is Cheltenham so there’ll be no skimming through anything!!

Let’s look at this from a stats/trends point of view so and see what we come up with.

Sixteen*of the last nineteen winners won the last time out before the festival.
Just*one of the last fifteen winners was rated lower than 80 on the flat.
The last fourteen winners have all been tested at one mile and four furlongs on the flat.
There have only been*seven placed Irish trained horses in the last*nine years, from a total of fifty-eight runners and 1 winner in 14years.
Sixteen mares have competed in the past 10years and have managed only 2 placed efforts.
Eighteen of the last twenty winners had their last prep run in the month of February.
Nineteen*of the last twenty-two winners had run at least three times over hurdles with seventeen of the last nineteen winning at least two races.
The last 7 winners were all rated 138+
Seven of the last*nine winners didn’t make their debut over hurdles until at least November.
Nicky Henderson, Willie Mullins and Alan King all have a good recent record in the race.
The Adonis Hurdle (statistically the best trial), Prestbury Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle and Finesse Hurdle are all good guides.
Only 1 favourite in the last 17 years has won.
8 out of the last 11 winners had posted their best RPR last time out.
10 of the last 11 winners were by a group1 winning sire. Most horses are these days I suppose!
Since the addition of the Fred Winter Hurdle to the Cheltenham Festival*six of the seven winners of this race have been in the first four in the betting, countrywide flame being the exception.
In summary: against the favourite but looking at the head of the market. Ignoring the Irish horses and any mares. Flat rating >80, jumps rating >140,* Ran 3+ times, winning 2+. Won a trial in Feb posting best RPR

In Soldaltino’s year 3 of the first four home were rated 146+ and were also the top rated. It was a similar story in Zarkanadar’s renewal although there was a few in that renewal rated 140+.* The first 3 home last year were also rated 140+ going into the Triumph.

It’s only the 17th February so there are still a few trials to be run. The following have ran their final preps already lets see how they fit the trends.

Our Conor – Irish trained is a negative but this guy deserves his place near the top of the market. Was very impressive in both Fairyhouse and Leopardstown. He makes a lovely shape over a hurdle, jumps brilliantly. Flat rating 84 (not tested at 12f though) , jumps rating 145, has had 3 runs, won em all, won a trial in Feb posting his best RPR. Loads of positives, any antepost value in 5/1? No. Won’t be much shorter on the day.

Far West – his Ascot win yesterday was a bit of a joke as it was a flat out sprint over 2furlongs but at least it showed his is very quick. Has had four runs and won them all, didn’t run on the flat. Made his debut in October.

Diakali – Impossible to see him turn around the form with Our Conor in my opinion. Hasn’t won last time out, trained in Ireland, didn’t post his best RPR last time, plenty of negatives

Chris Pea Green – has only had two runs over hurdles so hasn’t an official rating. Didn’t run on the flat either. Won his prep in February posting his best RPR.

Pistol – goes for the Fred Winter

The Adonis will tell alot more. L’Unique is due to run there. I’m not sure if the likes of Irish Saint, Hidden Justice, Rolling Star. Kashmir Peak will have another run.
