Wow massive news! Is it wrong for my brain to be thinking who is going to ride the mcmanus horses? But hell of a career from Barry.

        Barry Geraghty - Retired

Leading jockey Barry Geraghty, who won the Grand National and rode 43 Cheltenham Festival winners, announces his retirement aged 40.

I didn’t see that coming. Wise move by Geraghty. I really thought he was a brilliant jockey and an all time great. He had it all and I’m so glad he had a brilliant festival just gone. Another a big gun retiring but I wise him the best, I won a lot of money thanks to Barry

          Needs its own thread!

I'll move to NH forum tomorrow ...

Who gets the gig in the UK?

          Coleman?

            Cheers Kev

I was genuinely surprised by this announcement, I didn’t see it coming but glad he got out safe & well. JP needs a number one both in Ireland & GB. I think Jonjo Jr will get the gig personally

Jonjo Jnr to be the next retained jockey? It wouldn't surprise me.

....great insight into his injury toll on the current TV series of ‘Ambulance’. Filmed in Liverpool, one edition covered the National meeting and saw him being treated after a serious fall. His first thoughts were to ring his wife.

We all know it’s such a hazardous occupation for the jockey’s but it’s also a daily concern for their loved ones. Good on him, he deserves a long and happy retirement.

One of his critics here as I thought for a period he had lost his bottle after a couple of bad injuries.
I think it made him more careful on approach to obstacles. Which wasn't always what I wanted to see.

But he certainly rode some great rides over the years and this last season I had very few reasons to ever crab his rides.

I think that's right Q. He's a top, top jockey, but there were definitely a couple of spells after injury where he was cautious. I remember Dickie going through a similar spell too. All that said I've been a fan, and there were times where he was every bit as good as AP and Ruby.

The timing is a bit odd in the middle of summer, but it's good he's getting out on top after a stellar Festival. I do wonder whether JP wanted him riding more for his retainer, and at 40 Barry wasn't up for it. Anyway I'm sure there's a plan for what comes next, and whatever it is I wish him well. Even if there isn't, he's had a long and successful career, and I'm sure he has the time and money to figure it out.

As for who replaces him, I suspect nobody does for now. Dickie will ride the Hobbs horses, Nico will ride the Henderson horses, etc and most likely Jonjo Jnr and Coleman will pick up the rides for the stables where they don't have a top jock retained. JP will surely bide his time and see if Jonjo Jnr steps up to the plate or whether he needs to do something else?

Barry rode for me just the once.
13/11/2004 3rd on Lord Noelie to Stormez
A perfectly respectable ride and, as far as I remember, he gave a decent post race report. I do remember hearing that he tried to get connections of all his rides to each pay all his travel expenses. I believe that we knocked him down to a fair figure.

Happy that he's gone out on his own terms.

He went out with a bang though. His performance at this years festival was the best I've ever seen from him and ranks up there as the best from any jockey.

My favourite ever Barry ride... Riverside Theatre. (A lot to pick from but this sticks out for me)

....and for different reasons, the ride I'm most thankful for....
