  • Before I place this bet ... help me?

When I first joined this forum, I used it as a sounding board to validate bets I was going to make ... debating, drawing on others experience and ultimately working together, made better bets...

Now, (and I'm guilty of this) the culture seems to be, posting our bets then arguing the case for them no matter what.

In my opinion, fear of being mocked for 'not having your own opinion' is detrimental to us all working together to pick winners and find value.

    Thoughts?

Open to criticism here too, don't hold back!

Ultimately I want this forum to thrive and all opinions are welcome in here.

Kev, this is an interesting point, and I must admit that each time that I post in favour of a horse, and give my reasoning, I am reticent at what the response will be, in case someone has a particularly forceful way of responding against my own choice/reasoning.

I would hope we all come on here to share our thoughts, and ideas, and to gain from others thoughts and opinions, in a safe environment.

I welcome the other people’s news on horses (race targets, selections, reasoning etc) as it often drives me into researching previous form and videos of horses being debated, so I end up with a more informed opinion than I had before.

When we each post out our thoughts online, just like any other human contact we should be aware of the impact of what we are saying/writing and try and get the tone right. Otherwise forum members could tune out.

I want an inclusive and growing forum and to avoid being one where half-a-dozen people preach and rant at each other, and think their words are gospel and everyone else is on here as a target to be put in their place.

I think generally we have a pretty good place here but we shouldn’t be complacent about the tone of how we post or respond to posts.

Thank you for the thread, it’s a good idea to have this debate.

It a good idea, I tend to read opinions of people who have backed horses on here and think, thats a good idea and then back it myself or I dont like that and I might give a reason why the bet wouldnt be for me. I do find this site a really valuable tool for betting Cheltenham and giving me angles that i hadnt thought of.

I love putting my opinion forward, and in turn being shot down if it's wrong.

I, like many I'm sure, have held back from a bet because of good reasoning on here, but also put one on after a good argument. Think it's the nature of the beast.

I joined the forum for good chat and humour, I could never have imagined I would have listened to the many on here for opinions as I'm usually set in my ways.

I don't get as much time to argue as many potential bets at the moment, and it's so early on (season hasn't even started) I'm not sure I would right now anyway.

Most of my cash bets right now are of my strong opinion, where I have done my research or feel they need to be backed now.

I think this is a great site and most, of not all posters, are respectful and helpful.

Forums need opinions, so reasoning is actually a good thing to justify and explain them. New perspectives, etc. Obviously the sharing of any inside quotes from key sources is great to help us all beat the market. But you can’t expect those to be everyday.

As long as everyone has the mentality of sharing opinions to help each other rather than defeat each other in a debate, i’m happy to hear them!

I actually think this is one of the best sites in sport for that.

Intonation is very difficult to get across in this format so skill is required when communicating to project the intended tone.
              A little care is required.
It’s also important to be constructive and provide reasoning where possible.
I’d say it’s very good in both regards.
I can personally take any criticism and welcome it, as I can choose to take it on board or not.
Any feedback can be of use, either to educate or ultimately ignore.
And if someone says something on here that doesn’t quite stack up then I’ll question it so that clarity can hopefully ensue.

              On the subject of intonation.
Has anyone heard that blonde haired Irish lad from PP on the racing post cast.?
Now his verbal intonation needs some serious auto tuning

We’ve attracted very few idiots over the years with the vast majority of posters, and posts, being informative and respectful, no-one should have to think about potential abuse before posting their thoughts.

I think this is key. I mean we shouldn't be taking every word wrote as gospel anyway, but I have no doubt some might, without doing the relevant research of their own.

There's no point having incorrect information plastered over the forum, as that's no help to anyone, and I know not one person does it intentionally, hell, I've had my goes in the past. Correction should not be taken personally though.

Excellent post and something I can be guilty of too.

I think the standards and general views on here are very high which can sometimes lead to the culture of arguing the case no matter what. Nobody should fear having their own opinion, particularly people who are new to the forum - we were all new once.

I find myself giving far more thought to what I post here than I do other places because I respect the views of the people reading them more! I think that sums up what sort of place the FJF is so long may it continue!

I stumbled across this forum a couple of years ago and have always been impressed by the quality of the posts on here, very few wums and most put across valid and fair arguments for and against certain horses. I've certainly read some vital information at times regarding a horses well being or potential target that has saved me from wasting a few quid.

Slightly off topic but one thing that is perfectly innocent yet bugs me ,when someone rights full chapter and verse regarding a case for said horse . Then someone replies quoting the whole article to just say thanks great post etc adds few more pages of essentially the same stuff . Just quote the username or reference surely .

It's a fair point if you're quoting a complete post just to answer a few words in that post. Some may not know that you can delete the unwanted portion of the quoted material.

On the main issue, I'm always happy to be the resident wet blanket. There's no silver lining that I can't match with a cloud but I'll try to do it constructively.

Spot on lads on the quoting the long posts, i've had to stop myself a few times from commenting about it so i'm glad others have noticed. Fills the threads needlessly and makes the good stuff take longer to get to.
Coming out of hibernation now myself, have been an avid reader though the last few months will start posting more.

Imo this is the best forum about for sharing information and good reasoned debate. Plenty with different opinions which makes things all the more interesting too.
