  • Not for public circulation Q but I have come across a couple of useful contacts close to Hendo and the Donnelly's in recent months, below is extract from an email I was sent about 10 days ago but please don't share:

As things stand the golden rule will be not to run any D horse against another one.
Hence, assuming they all stay fit -
Gaillard Du Mesnil - National Hunt Chase
Ramillies - Browns Advisory (but could transfer if anything happens to GDM)
    Shishkin - Ryanair
City Chief - National Hunt Chase (but unlikely to run unless anything happens to GDM, the theory being he needs a flat track and will be kept for Aintree)
    State Man - Champion Hurdle
Haut En Couleurs - Plate (first option) / Coral Cup (if reverting to hurdles)
Asterion Forlonge - Stayers Hurdle (if at all)
Brandy Love - Coral Cup / Mares Hurdle (could go for either but CC more likely currently if Honeysuckle, Marie’s Rock & Love Envoi all run,

The Coral Cup was very much on their radar and still is, if MAries Rock heads to the Stayers I suspect it still is, if Honeysuckle or Love Envoi get pulled it is much less likely...

Thanks for this Ista, most of it makes sense, but I do not believe the Brandy Love part. She;s a grade one mare and only aged 7 and willie will only have one thing in mind. And the Donnelly's have no other mare in contention. She'd need to run to at least 157 to even break par in the coral cup, which is probably good enough to win the mares.
    Q,

I know you like a lot of NRNB darts at the early prices offered on the handicaps.

You often spot a good one early, so I have a good regard for your opinion.

Could I ask which ones are your main picks in each of them?

Now we know a lot more but still changes to come I'd say the following...

Ultima - Cloudy Glen & Death Duty
Grand Annual - Buddy Rich, Embittered, Ciel de Neige

Pertemps - Winter Fog, Dallas des pictons
Kim Muir - first four in the betting, plus janika

To be honest the hurdles I've no strong opinion on other than the obviously well handicapped types, but if you see from my diary page 1 - looking at the ones I've backed since NRNB came in, it's simply a focus on JP runners, Elliott, Mullins and any Irish really, Henderson in the Coral and Skelton's, and anything that looks well in, based on form. A lot of these will clearly not run given the information we've had since, so I expect them to thin out.

I will probably have around 5/6 runners in each of the races except the boodles which I'm likely to leave to the 3 this year. Although I think I may have overdone the Team for the Ultima and might have more declared than I'd like. I can cope with 7/8 but anymore is a mistake that'll be hard to correct.

As in my assessment/review of last year the stakes for the county and coral cup and pipe will be lower than on the other races where I think the likely winners can be found a little easier. Although the plate has been tricky this year.
