AINTREE festival bumper winner The New One could bid for a second Grade 2 victory at the Open meeting next month in the The Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle.

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies said: "It's certainly a race we are looking at for The New One. He has come out of his race on Friday brilliantly - he is very laid back and you wouldn't know he's had a race.

"I thought his performance at Cheltenham was very good. He was on the bridle coming to the last and just had to be shaken up on the run in and he went away well.

"He has all the right attributes and he travels well. His jumping wasn't too bad as he was quite quick over his hurdles. He wasn't spectacular, which we would like, but it was a very good performance overall. I think the form is very solid as the first two were miles clear of the rest.

"I think one day he will get three miles as he is stoutly bred but I think for the moment we will stick to two-and-a-half. He won on very soft ground at Newton Abbot - I know it wasn't much of a race - but at the moment we are not worried about the ground."

Always difficult figuring out what way horses are going to go between this and the Supreme. I thought this lad might be worth tracking ...

Henry de Bromhead looks to have another useful prospect on his hands in Sizing Rio (13-8), who put in an impressive round under Paul Carberry to see off the odds-on Cops And Robbers easily by 18 lengths in the Dine In The Bobbyjo Bistro Maiden Hurdle.

The trainer said: "He was very good in his point-to-point the day he won, but he was very disappointing when he ran in the bumper at Punchestown. We couldn't really put our finger on what went wrong, but he's put that behind him now.

"I was tempted to go for another bumper the way he's been working, but he jumps well so we decided to go over hurdles. His half-brother Sizing Mexico was a real out-and-out stayer, but this lad's a lot sharper. He'll probably go for a two-mile novice somewhere within the next month."

          Cheltenham

There were lots of interesting types in the 2m5f novice hurdle, which was won in good style by Coneygree. In theory this was part of a series of races building up to the Neptune but that requires a really fast horse and, like many winners of this sort of race, Coneygree might well be best aimed at the Albert Bartlett, (20/1 for both.) He looks a good prospect.

          Cork

Champion Bumper winner Champagne Fever began his hurdles campaign with a facile win from a poor field at Cork, (2m soft.) He shapes like a stayer and whilst he may try to make all in Ireland on soft ground over the winter at 2m, I’d expect to see him line up in the Neptune (14/1) rather than the Supreme (12/1), but that’s likely to depend on what else Willie Mullins has come March.

          Punchestown

The previous day at Punchestown, one of the hype horses from last season, Minsk, made his return to jumping. This 103 rated flat horse was a close 2nd on debut at Fairyhouse and brushed Glen’s Melody aside with the minimum of fuss (2m4f, heavy.) The runner up had won all 3 starts in bumpers but there was nothing else in the field so the form’s hard to assess. He’s best judged after another run, (14/1 for the Neptune.)

              BHA Handicapper

              GOOD FOR THE SEUIL

The staying novice division is shaping up nicely - I mentioned the exciting trio of Coneygree (currently 150), Pont Alexandre (would be 148) and Don Cossack (would be a minimum of 144) in my last article a couple of blogs ago, writes Martin Greenwood.

Now add to that mix Taquin du Seuil who justified favouritism in the Betfred Mobile Sports Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury in impressive fashion last Saturday.

Beaten only by the decent My Tent Or Yours from his three previous hurdle starts, Taquin du Seuil looks a good stayer in the making and waltzed clear having been waited with to beat the 140-rated Easter Day by nine lengths. Standards for this particular race over the last five years suggest somewhere in the region of the high 140’s so it was a relatively easy decision to put Taquin du Seuil to a new rating to 149, only 1lb behind Coneygree, who, if anything, looks an even stouter stayer. The staying novice races at both Cheltenham and Aintree already look races to savour!

Scintillating Naas scorer Rule The World is likely to head straight to the Cheltenham Festival should connections give a trip to Prestbury Park the green light.

The six-year-old appeared to have plenty on his plate stepping up to Grade Two level for the Slaney Novice Hurdle on Sunday, tackling two horses who had already proven their worth at the highest level in the Willie Mullins-trained Champagne Fever and Dessie Hughes' Minsk.

The former was subsequently found to be suffering from a respiratory tract infection, but there did not appear to be any excuses for Minsk, who was brushed aside by Rule The World in impressive fashion.

As a result of his weekend performance, Rule The World is prominent in ante-post lists for both the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle and the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham, but trainer Mouse Morris is in no rush to confirm his participation in either race.

Morris said: "It was a very good performance on the day. I know there were excuses for Willie's horse, but we still beat Dessie Hughes' horse 16 lengths and he'd shown some good form.

"I don't think the ground really matters to our horse, but he might be a bit better on better ground.

"We haven't made any definite plans. I'll talk to the owners (Gigginstown House Stud) and we'll see where we are in a couple of weeks. I wouldn't say at this stage he'll definitely go to Cheltenham, but if he does he'll be going straight there.

"He'll probably be entered for the two-and-a-half-mile race (Neptune) and the three-miler (Albert Bartlett), so we'll see. Two and a half miles might be as far as he'd want to go round Cheltenham at the moment.

"He is still quite an immature horse and if we decide not to go to Cheltenham, there is always Fairyhouse and Punchestown at home."

THE NEW ONE is arguably the most exciting horse under trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies' wing at present and the five-year-old has been giving out all the right signals ahead of his next Cheltenham Festival trial at Warwick on Saturday.

The gelded son of King's Theatre is set to take in a Grade Two novices' hurdle sponsored by Neptune Investments, who are also backing the race in March which The New One is being primed for.

Always a more than willing worker, The New One looked in sparkling form in his latest strong spin up the steep Fibresand gallop.

Winner of all but one of his six races under Rules, he finished just out of the money in the Cheltenham Bumper last year but made amends in handsome style when capturing the Aintree equivalent on the last of his four starts.

This season, with his attention switched to novice hurdles, he could hardly have been more impressive in two winning outings and with his penchant for going left-handed, Warwick should suit him perfectly.

                            GOB

Wednesday – Neptune Novice Hurdle: RULE THE WORLD (12/1 general)
Don Cossack was originally my number one hope (and probably that of owners Gigginstown House Stud) for this race but following his heavy tumble when already beaten in the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle won by Pont Alexandre before Christmas it’s quite possible this half-brother to 2008 runner-up Venalmar has now assumed that status.

He may have been slightly flattered by how the race panned out when landing the Grade 2 Slaney Novice Hurdle at Naas earlier this month but I think it would be unwise to underestimate the merit of that performance. He travelled and jumped superbly throughout, and while Champagne Agent was well below his best I’m not sure the same could be said of runner-up Minsk.

Having apparently failed to quite see out three miles when tried over that trip at Cork earlier in the season, hopefully connections will aim for the 2m5f contest rather than the Albert Bartlett.

Rule the World - Graham Richards

Rule The World is a fast improving hurdler. His most recent win may have been overshadowed by Champagne Fever’s below-par run and Minsk chasing the pace too hard in the early stages. Nevertheless, there can be no argument with the way he stamped his class on the race. Winning easily, he stayed on strongly all the way to the line. A fine big horse, his physique and breeding suggests he will stay three-miles when required.
