  • Double up winners

Well Gents I'm not quite on suicide watch but it's fair to say that once the festival is over I become overwhelmed with a massive sense of depression.
It's not quite 11 months of 5f handicaps of course but you get my point.

So I got thinking, every year throws up horses who double up the following year, 2016 saw Douvan, Vatour, Cause of Causes and On the Fringe, of this years 28 winners who do we think will win in 2017 ?

Obviously we have to second guess the Mullins army targets, any of this year winners could double up.
One thing I was told before last week was that Mall Dini woudl be a better horse over fences and that chasing was the plan for next year, given his progress this year he could be a serious horse next year and the RSA looks to be an obvious target.

    Any thoughts ?

yep true, there's a decent Newbury card coming up too and Perth not far away.
I always do Sandown for Whitbread Day, great day out.
Then of course there's the Summer meets at the Rasen and Stratford with occasional clues to the Triumph.....

I might do Fairyhouse next Monday but struggling for motivation.

I'll hopefully make Aintree but think that will be it.

Whitbread day is a cracker but not around.

Perth, Ayr and the Rasen are on my bucket list.

I actually love the next six weeks of racing but was still struggling yesterday.

Need to get to the gym.

Id say 4 is par for returning winners.

            Yorkhill
            Douvan
            Thistlecrack
            Ivanovich Gorbatov

            are my guesses.

I'd say Altior and Yorkhill have big chances of being 2017 winners. Douvan and Thistlecrack would be my picks of the older brigade.

              Nothing too original from me......

I can see a fourth win on the bounce for Vautour, and I think it will be the Champion chase

Will you be on ante-post ?

I'm surprised there's so little love for Altior, I made that a proper performance and once that puts him bang up there for the champion hurdle next year in my book, of those we saw last week he looks the most likely winner to me, of course the absent Mullins horses could still be a force next year.

I get the Ivanovic Gorbatov hype, could be a very good horse, but he looked to need every yard of that Triumph trip to me and I think will be better (as most Triumph horses are) over further as they get older.
Can he win a World hurdle at 5, never been done in the modern festival era, otherwise he could be thrown into a Champion Hurdle he's unlikely to have sufficient speed to win.

I will back Vautour ante post definitely, he has made the last 2 festivals for me, along with Faugheen last year, so he owes me nothing, I backed him for the QM this year, it took a couple of seasons for them to get Annie in the right race I' m hoping they will have learned from that. I'll also be building a decent posi on Djakadam, fast forward to next season and a snagless prep for him, instead of a fall followed by a couple of dozen stitches then injections to stave off infection leaving him too drained to do his normal work for 2 weeks, then a little more juice in the ground on the Friday and you could be looking at a proven horse with a huge chance, with a generous ew voucher

Well said Iain - a week beforehand it was still impossible to know where a lot of his runners were going. However, once they are there they take some beating.

                            You have convinced me.

Thinking about chances Mullins winners ran in the races they did. Id say -

Douvan - 75% Predictable Arkle was target this time last year
                            Annie Power - 10% Chance
                            VVM - 33% Chance
                            Yorkhill - 40% Chance
                            Black H - 10% Chance
                            Vautour - 50% Chance
Limini - 80% Chance ( if he knew about her at all)

You would need 3/4 times the on the day price for that risk ?

Only thing I'd say about VVM is that I heard from a very reliable source on the Thursday to smash into Limini, Ruby said that she was a better mare than VVM running in a worse race and that the evens was a gift from the gods.
Given Limini is 2 years younger I'd expect her to step up to the Mares which means VVM will be re-routed elsewhere, she has jumped fences so perhaps she will be the Ricci's Ryanair horse ?
