    Johns Spirit

Johns Spirit was really well backed for the two-and-a-half-mile handicap chase at Cheltenham on Saturday, from 12/1 in the morning and again on course into 5/1, and he could have been called the winner from a long way out.

He travelled really well in rear in the hands of Richie McLernon, his jumping, which has failed in the past in the face of a stiff examination at Cheltenham, was generally very good on this occasion. Indeed, he made ground at several of his fences, his jump at the open ditch at the top of the hill in particular was spectacular. He cruised down the hill, McLernon was still motionless turning for home, he eased to the front going to the final fence and he cleared away up the hill to win by three and a half lengths. He probably won with more in hand than the winning margin, and the time was fast, the fastest by far on the day and 0.12secs/furlong faster than Racing Post par.

Jonjo O’Neill’s horse is still only six, and he remains highly progressive judged on this performance. He won a good three-mile handicap chase on Tingle Creek weekend at Sandown last December, and he ran a couple of big races in defeat after that, finishing second to Katenko back at Sandown and third to Battle Group at Aintree, both over three miles.

He started this season on a good handicap mark, 4lb lower than he was for those two placed runs last season. If he can continue to jump like he jumped on Saturday, a 10lb hike for his win may not be enough to stop him progressing further. He is only 6lb higher than he was for his peak last season, and he is a young horse who still has bundles of scope for progression. Also, given how well he was backed here, it is logical to conclude that his trainer has been happy with his progress at home.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup is a legitimate target now, as long as the ground is not too soft. No winner of this race has won the Paddy Power in 12 years, but winners of this have run well in the race since then, which makes sense given that it is over the same course and distance. There is a chance that AP McCoy would ride him if he did take his chance in the Paddy Power – JP McManus does not appear to have a more obvious contender at this stage – and, if he did, the 16/1 that is currently available could look big. Interestingly, Shooting Light, the last horse to win both races, had gone up 14lb for winning the October race.

Tap Night is another possible for JP - must be more in Ireland too.

Russell said: "Tap Night will be entered for the Paddy Power Gold Cup. He runs this weekend at Carlisle and we will see how he gets on there before making a decision about Cheltenham.

"He has come back from his summer break in good form and has been schooling and working nicely. I was really pleased with how well he did last season and I thought his run at Aintree behind Captain Conan was especially good.

"Two and a half miles is his trip and he seems to handle any ground, so if he continues to improve, he should be competitive."

Nicky Henderson & Jonjo O'Neill talk about their Paddy Power Gold Cup hopes

49 entries revealed for The Open highlight

30th October 2013 - A total of 49 entries (up from 44 in 2012) are revealed today for the Paddy Power Gold Cup - the feature race of The Open which kick starts the 2013/2014 Jump season on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 15, 16 & 17.

The Grade Three handicap chase boasts prize money of £160,000 and takes place on the second day of The Open at Cheltenham, Saturday, November 16.

Reigning champion trainer Nicky Henderson has one Paddy Power Gold Cup victory to his name, with Fondmort taking the honours a decade ago.

He is responsible for seven entries this year, the most of any trainer, which are headed by 2012 Queen Mother Champion Chase victor Finian's Rainbow (14/1 with Paddy Power), Captain Conan (10/1), a triple Grade One winner in novice company last season, Rajdhani Express (10/1), successful in the Listed Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase at The Festival in 2013, and the mare Nadiya De La Vega (16/1), who was third last year. His three other entries are Kid Cassidy (16/1), Triolo d'Alene (14/1) and Ma Filleule (16/1).

Henderson said: "This weekend, we will find out where we are with the horses because the first of what I would call the main bunch will be running. I have no doubt that some of them will get tired, but there is still a bit of time between now and The Open.

"We have got seven in the Paddy Power and all of them are very possible runners at this stage, but it is just a case of assessing things nearer the time.

"Captain Conan could go, as could Nadiya De La Vega - she ran a very good race last year. Rajdhani Express is the horse we have always been pointing in that direction. He has done well over the summer and obviously there is no problem with jockey arrangements there because Sam (Waley-Cohen) will ride him.

"Finian's Rainbow would be the very interesting one because he has had a wind operation and I am very hopeful that he will come back to himself. He ran very well at Sandown on his final start last season and look what the winner (Sire De Grugy) did on Saturday - they are calling him the young pretender to Sprinter Sacre now. Finian's showed there that he is on his way back, but he does need good ground to be seen at his best."

Jonjo O'Neill has also won the Paddy Power Gold Cup once as a trainer, courtesy of Exotic Dancer in 2006. His entry this year is Johns Spirit (10/1), who warmed up perfectly for the Paddy Power Gold Cup with victory at Cheltenham in the two and a half-mile Equus-Fine Dining at The Festival Handicap Chase at The Showcase on October 19.

O'Neill reported: "Johns Spirit is in good form and the Paddy Power Gold Cup will hopefully be the next stop for him.

"You would have to be happy with his performance at Cheltenham last time. I don't know how strong the race was, but he travelled and jumped well and won nicely.

"It will probably be a bigger field in the Paddy Power and I don't know if that will suit him, but Richie McLernon gets a good tune out of him and rides him well.

"We will go there hopeful, but that's as confident as you could be because it is always a very hot race and you have got to have a lot of luck in running."

David Pipe sent out Great Endeavour to win the 2011 Paddy Power Gold Cup, while his father Martin trained a record eight winners of the race. There are four entries from Pond House this year, headed by Dynaste who is the 5/1 favourite with Paddy Power. The seven-year-old demonstrated high-class form in novice company last season, winning four of his five starts including the Grade One Feltham Novices' Chase at Kempton Park. He was also successful in Grade Two events at Newbury and Aintree, while he opened his chasing account with a victory at Cheltenham. His only reversal came at The Festival, when he was runner-up to Benefficient (12/1) in the Grade Two Jewson Novices' Chase.

Pipe is also responsible for the 8/1 second favourite Ballynagour, plus Grands Crus (16/1) and Salut Flo (12/1).

Benefficient is one of 11 Irish-trained entries, with other leading contenders from the Emerald Isle including Marito (14/1), one of four entries for Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins, and Realt Dubh (14/1), one of Noel Meade's two entries.

Paul Nicholls enjoyed his first Paddy Power Gold Cup victory in 2012 with Al Ferof and has six entries to choose from this year headed by Unioniste (14/1), successful in last season's December Gold Cup at Cheltenham, and Rolling Aces (12/1), who was a progressive novice last season.

Nigel Twiston-Davies is the most successful current trainer in the Paddy Power Gold Cup with three victories and he has made two entries - Astracad (20/1), who was runner-up to Conquisto (14/1) in the Grade Two Old Roan Chase at Aintree on October 26 and the useful novice Double Ross (20/1).

Another local trainer is Martin Keighley and he is likely to bid for the biggest success of his career so far with Champion Court (12/1), who has scored twice in Grade Two company at Cheltenham.

Weights for the Paddy Power Gold Cup will be revealed on Wednesday, November 6. The maximum field size is 20.

Paddy Power Gold Cup - Paddy Power Bet:

5/1 Dynaste; 8/1 Ballynagour; 10/1 Rajdhani Express, Captain Conan; Johns Spirit 12/1 Benefficient, Champion Court, Salut Flo, Rolling Aces; 14/1 Unioniste, Katenko, Colour Squadron, Marito, Finians Rainbow, Realt Dubh, Conquisto, Triolo DAlene; 16/1 Grands Crus, Hidden Cyclone, Third Intention, Walkon, Fago, Kid Cassidy, Ulck Du Lin, Nadiya de La Vega, Ma Filleule, Rupert Lamb; 20/1 Tap Night, Gift Of Dgab, Wishfull Thinking, Battle Group, Terminal, Texas Jack, Astracad, Easter Meteor, Bury Parade, Double Ross; 25/1 Vino Griego, Carrickboy, Woolcombe Folly, Colbert Station, Bless The Wings, Sweet My Lord; 33/1 Attaglance, Kumbeshwar, Hectors Choice, Duke of Lucca; 40/1 Tatenen; 50/1 Sean Airgead

The Open sees bookmaker Paddy Power renew its long association with the Home of Jump Racing which started in 2003.

In a three-year deal announced on October 1, the Irish bookmaker is the title sponsor of the second day, The Paddy Power Open Saturday. Paddy Power will continue to sponsor a race on the Friday, the paddypower.com Handicap Chase, and as well as the feature race on the Saturday, the Grade Three Paddy Power Gold Cup.

1st November 2013 - Irish handler Noel Meade is considering a tilt at the £160,000 Paddy Power Gold Cup for multiple Grade One-winning chaser Realt Dubh, after the nine-year-old was not declared for tomorrow's JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal.

The son of Beneficial was one of the leading novice chasers during the 2010/11 season, annexing three Grade One contests in Ireland and finishing a respectable third to Captain Chris in the Racing Post Arkle Chase at The Festival.

Derek Sharkey's gelding also finished runner-up to Sizing Europe in the two-mile Champion Chase at Punchestown in April, 2012, but was not able to run at any of the spring festivals last season after picking up an injury in the Grade Two paddypower.com Chase at Naas in February.

Meade reported: "Realt Dubh is in good form and is certainly a possible runner in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, but we will just see how things are looking when the weights come out.

"He had an OK campaign last season, but it was just a shame he didn't get to finish it out. He picked up a knock and I suppose it happened when he made a bad mistake at the last in Naas, but hopefully he will find his form again.

"He is in at Thurles (John Meagher Memorial Chase, November 7) next week and we will see what is going to turn up, but I would say he will probably start there.

"We are on the back foot a bit with him now. He is a bit older and is not going to be improving, so we have to lower out sights a little bit. I think two and a half miles is his optimum trip. We have tried him over three miles once, but we found it was just a little bit too far for him."

Realt Dubh is a 14/1 chance with the sponsor to become only the second Irish-trained winner of the Grade Three Paddy Power Gold Cup since Bright Highway triumphed for Michael O'Brien in 1980. Tranquil Sea has been the only winner trained across the Irish Sea during that period, justifying favouritism for Edward O'Grady in 2009.

Weights for the Paddy Power Gold Cup, run on Saturday, November 16, are revealed on Wednesday, November 6.

18 runners and nearly bottom of ratings. Would be of interest if it stayed goodish though.

Gollings could aim Conquisto at Paddy Power Gold Cup as weights are revealed
                        *
6th November 2013 - Finian's Rainbow (11st 12lb - 14/1 with Paddy Power) heads the weights for the £160,000 Paddy Power Gold Cup, the highlight of The Open at Cheltenham on Saturday, November 16.
                        *
The 10-year-old won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at The Festival in 2012 and is one of seven entries for champion trainer Nicky Henderson. Among the septet is Grade One-winning novice Captain Conan (11st 8lb - 10/1), Rajdhani Express (11st 4lb -** 10/1), winner of the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase at The Festival in March, and last year's third Nadiya De La Vega (10st 3lb - 16/1).
                        *
Dynaste enjoyed a fantastic first season over fences, the highlight being an impressive nine-length success in the Grade One Feltham Novices' Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, and has been allotted 11st 8lb. David Pipe's grey is the 5/1 favourite with Paddy Power, but missed his intended reappearance at Wetherby on Saturday, November 2.
                        *
Pipe could also be represented by the Allan Stennett-owned pair of Ballynagour (10st 6lb -8/1), a well-beaten eighth when favourite for the Byrne Group Plate at The Festival, and Salut Flo (10st 7lb - 12/1), who has not been seen since landing the corresponding race in 2012.
                        *
Trainer Steve Gollings is considering running Conquisto (11st 3lb, 14/1) in the prestigious contest following a gallant length and a quarter victory over Astracad (10st 5lb - 20/1) in the Grade Two Betfred Monet's Garden Old Roan Chase at Aintree on October 26.
                        *
The eight-year-old took well to chasing last season and has made the frame in all eight of his starts over fences. He was in fine form during the spring, annexing a two-mile Listed Handicap Chase at Ayr on April 20, and placing in valuable handicap chases either side of that at Ascot and Haydock Park.
                        *
Gollings revealed: "Conquisto has come out of the Old Roan 100 per cent and I could not be happier with him.
                        *
"He is in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, but nothing is certain yet. We will assess the race at the next stage and take it from there, but other possibilities include the Amlin Chase at Ascot and the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon. It's exciting stuff.
                        *
"He went up four pounds for winning at Aintree and I don't know if it is a guilt thing with the handicapper, but he has been badly treated in the past and maybe it is evening itself out now.
                        *
"Conquisto still seems to be improving and I have said many times before that he lacks a bit of size, but he doesn't think he is small and is a tremendous horse to train. For his diminutive size, he has so much scope but, for any horse of that stature, it is that much more difficult.
                        *
"He is a real tough, genuine horse and I don't think we would be able to replace him. I think if he was a hand bigger, he would be a world beater."
                        *
Other notable contenders include the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Johns Spirit (10st 2lb - 7/1), who scored impressively at The Showcase, recent Down Royal Grade Two victor Rolling Aces (11st 5lb - 12/1) from the stable of last year's winning trainer Paul Nicholls and Martin Keighley's course winner Champion Court (11st 6lb - 12/1).
                        *
The Irish challenge is led by Benefficient (11st 6lb - 12/1), who landed the Grade Two Jewson Novices' Chase at The Festival in March and reappeared this season when fourth in the Grade Two Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday, November 2 and the Shark Hanlon-trained Hidden Cyclone (11st 1lb - 12/1). Ireland's champion Jump trainer Willie Mullins has four entries - Marito (10st 10lb - 14/1), Terminal (10st7lb - 20/1), Rupert Lamb (10st 2lb - 16/1) and Sweet My Lord (9st 8lb - 25/1).
                        *
