  • Boylesports Hurdle Leopardstown ( Old Pierse Hurdle) 2013

The much-improved flat race performer Inis Meain (pictured) is the early favourite for the Boylesports.com Hurdle, the always competitive and valuable handicap hurdle to be run at Leopardstown on Saturday week, January 26th.

Trained by Denis Hogan, Inis Meain has not raced over hurdle since last April when he finished down the field at Aintree off a BHA mark of 130. His Irish hurdling mark is 120. However, in the meantime the horse has won four flat races and his flat handicap mark has risen to 99.

The weights are jointly headed on 11st 10lb by Dermot Weld’s dual Grade 1 winner of last season, Hisaabaat, and Willie Mullins’ Rattan, one of six entries for the Closutton trainer with Abbey Lane (10st 7lbs) possibly the pick of his sextet having finished a close second at Fairyhouse recently after a break of nearly two years from the racecourse.

Last year’s winner, Citizenship (10st 9lbs), is likely to try and become the first horse since Redundant Pal in 1990 and 1991 to win the race in successive years while the runner up in 2012, Leah Claire (10st 5lbs), is another intended runner.

The Tom Mullins-trained King Of Queens (11st 5lbs) is likely to be a leading fancy having won his last two races in good style.

The Martin Brassil-trained Worldor (10st 4lbs) is another interesting contender having won twice at Naas this season while Gordon Elliott has four to choose from with last season’s smart juvenile, Shadow Catcher (11st 2lbs) and the prolific winner Discoteca (10st 13lbs), both likely to figure prominently.

Tony Martin sent out Xenophon to take this race in 2003 and he could be represented by Thomas Edison (11st 1lb) or the promising Ted Veale (10st 13lbs) while as a jockey Charlie Swan proved successful on Grinkov in 2001 and he has entered Hit The Headlines (10st 4lbs).

Noel Meade’s only success in this long established contest came with Glencloud in 1993 and he will be hoping that either Il Fenomeno (11st 2lbs), recent Navan winner Blissful Moment (10st 1lbs) or the four year old Hartside (8st 9lbs) can give him a second success while the most successful trainer in the history of the race is six time winner Arthur Moore whose Gentleman Duke (9st 11lbs) is his sole entry.

Leon Blanche of Boylesports said: "We are set for a fantastic day or racing at Leopardstown on the 26th, particularly the two Boylesports-sponsored feature races. And to make things even better for punters, we’re again industry-leading in our Non-Runner Money Back offer on the Boylesports.com Hurdle. If you have a bet in the race from 9am today (january 15th) and your horse does not line up you will get your money back. This is the latest in a line of high-profile races for which Boylesports has made this offer available to its customers”.

Pat Keogh of Leopardstown said: ‘"The line up for this year’s renewal of the Boylesports.com Hurdle is particularly strong. It has all the ingredients of being a cracking hurdle race. The commitment from Boylesports to the race and their Cheltenham Bonus Offer has resulted in a great entry. “

Boylesports pricing includes the following: Inis Meain is the early 4/1 favourite for the Hurdle with Thomas Mullins-trained King of Queens and Ted Veale both at 7/1.

The two feature races sponsored by Boylesports at the meeting, as in 2012, carry huge potential bonuses for the winner of each race. If the winner of the Boylesports.com Hurdle goes on to land any race at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival (excluding the charity race), Boylesports will pay winning connections a bonus of €100,000.

If the winner of the Boylesports.Com Bet On Your Mobile Novice Chase goes on to land any one of the Arkle Chase, Jewson Novices' Chase or RSA Chase at Cheltenham, winning connections will receive a bonus of €50,000 from Boylesports.

Last year, Sir Des Champs won the Leopardstown novice chase and went on to land the €50,000 by landing the 'Jewson'. He is a leading player for this year's Cheltenham Gold Cup. Sir Des Champs' owner Michael O'Leary donated the bonus to the Dublin hospital that had treated and cared for his father when ill with cancer.

Based on the trends from the past 10 years you are looking for a horse:

        Aged 5 to 8
Won or placed last time (ideally at Leopardstown, Fairyhouse or Punchestown)
Posted an RPR of 119+ last time out
        Run in past 35 days
Run no more than 4 times this season
Run 3 to 9 times over hurdles
Run in 5 or fewer handicap hurdles (winning 0 or 1)
        Second season hurdler
        Carrying less than 10-12
        Officially rated 116 to 126
Placed in a hurdles race at Leopardstown Christmas meeting
Finished in first 5 in the Bar One Handicap Hurdle
Finished in first 3 in a 2M H'cap Hurdle at Punchestown Winter Festival
Trained by Jessica Harrington, Tony Martin or Willie Mullins
        Priced 16/1 or shorter

Trainer Denis Hogan is starting to tune up Inis Meain for his major assignment in the Boylesports.com Hurdle on Saturday.
Although also entered in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, the County Tipperary trainer says his prime objective is Leopardstown’s valuable handicap.

The sponsors have taken no chances about the six-year-old, who was a laughably easy winner on the Flat on his most recent outing at Listowel in September and make him their ante-post favourite.

Inis Meain had scored on three other occasions on the Flat during the summer since a moderate run in a conditional riders’ handicap hurdle at Aintree.

"Leopardstown is Plan A, although there’s still a little time to go and I have a bit of work to do with him yet," said Hogan.

"He had been running all summer and hadn’t had a long time off after Aintree, so I wanted to give him a break."

Inis Meain has recently been purchased by powerful Irish owner Barry Connell, and Hogan said: "It’s great to have Barry involved in the yard and hopefully we can be lucky for him."
