      Irish racing picked out these

Mullins, who won the race last year with On His Own, is responsible for nine entries which are Apt Approach (11-8), Lambro (11-2), Quiscover Fontaine (11-1), Deutschland (10-13) Bishopsfurze (10-12), Uncle Junior (10-11), Shakervilz (10-8) and Sweet My Lord (10-2).

Tullintan (9-13) and Jadanli (9-12), who finished second and third in the race last year, could return for another shot at the prestigious contest.

Charlie Swan’s Start Me Up (10-4) was well fancied for the race last year but was pulled out with a temperature. He could take his chance this time around while the Colm Murphy trained The Westener Boy (10-5), Paul Nolan’s Panther Claw (9-11) and Son Amix (10-9) for Tom Cooper are all interesting entries.[/I]

Robert Tyner believes Tullintain is coming to himself at just the right time as he aims to go one better than last year in Thursday's Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park.

The 10-year-old was second to On His Own 12 months ago and showed he was coming back to something approaching his best when second in a valuable handicap at Limerick last time out.

He also holds an entry in the Leopardstown Handicap Chase on Saturday, but Gowran will be his destination.

"He'll run in the Thyestes, where we'll hope to go one better than last year. You never know, it's a very competitive race," said Tyner.

"He was unlucky the last day, Jim Dreaper's horse (Harpsy Cord) fell and interfered badly with us, otherwise we would have won. Mind, if he hadn't fallen, we'd still only have been second.

"He's on a similar mark to last year and he seems to come to himself at this time of year.

"He seems to go through the heavy ground well enough, so that won't be a problem."

Paddy Power make Tullintain an 11-1 chance to avenge last year's defeat.

The Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase is one of the highlights on the Irish National Hunt calendar each year and takes place at Gowran Park on Thursday 24th January. The race can often throw up clues for the Irish and Aintree Grand Nationals later in the season with Hedgehunter and Numbersixvalverde featuring amongst the last 10 winners of the race. The last 6 winners ran in either the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown or the It Duggan Memorial at Limerick.

Below we take a look at the trends for the past 10 runnings:

                Age (Win-Place-Runners)

                7yo: 2-1-16

                8yo: 3-8-39

                9yo: 4-11-45

                10yo: 1-6-44

                11yo+: 0-2-20

Horses aged 7 to 9 have a combined record of 9-20-100, which compares well to horses aged 10+: 1-8-64.

                Weight (Win-Place-Runners)

Horses carrying 10-9 or more: 2-12-72

Horses carrying 10-8 or less: 8-16-92

Horses carrying less than 10-9 have won 8 of the last 10 runnings of this race. The 2 winners to carry 10-9+ to victory were Preists Leap in 2009 (won the race previous year) and Siegemaster in 2011 (3rd the previous year).

                Top Weight: 4744F42010 (1-3-10)

                Official Ratings

Horses rated 130 or higher: 3-14-76

Horses rated 129 or lower: 7-14-88

7 of 10 winners were officially rated 129 or lower, however in recent years the trends has pointed towards higher rated runners, with 5 of the last 6 winners being rated 125+.

                Recent/Past Form

10 of 10 winners had had a run since Christmas

9 of 10 winners had won or placed on one or both of last two completed starts

9 of 10 winners had won over at least 3 miles

8 of 10 winners had run in 11 or fewer chases

10 of 10 winners had run in 5 or less handicap chases

8 of 10 winners were first or second season chasers (2 exceptions finished in first 3 in previous year's race)

8 of 10 winners ran at Leopardstown or Limerick Christmas meetings

8 of 10 winners had won or placed in a class 2/grade C or higher chase

                Other Races

Highest placed finisher from previous year's race: 5P261090 (1-1-8)

Highest placed finisher from Tim Duggan Memorial H'cap Chase: 6P012 (1-1-5)

Highest placed finisher from Paddy Power Chase to run in this: 923P3P36 (0-4-8)

Previous season's Woodlands Park Club Novice Chase winner (Medical Card): 220F5 (0-2-5)

ComfyBed Novice Handicap Chase winner (Caduceus): 4 (0-1-1)

Batterstown Handicap Chase winner (Murchu): 43 (0-1-2)

Troytown Handicap Chase winner (Tofino Bay): 2885 (0-1-4)

4 of 10 winners (4 of last 6) ran in Paddy Power Chase last time, finishing FF8B

2 of 10 (2 of last 6) ran in Tim Duggan Memorial Handicap Chase, finishing 73

2 of 10 winners ran in Troytown Handicap Chase, finishing 04

2 of 10 winners ran in previous Irish Grand National, finishing 7F

                Trainers

Willie Mullins (3-6-23) has saddled 2 winner and 5 places in the past 6 years and has trained 4 winners since 2000.

Dessie Hughes (1-3-6) has a very strong record in this, with his 6 four runners producing 1 winners (Siegemaster in 2011) and 3 places.

Paul Nolan (0-4-8) has seen 4 of his 8 runners make the places since 2003.

Fran Flood (0-1-1) has seen his one runner in this finish 3rd while Robert Tyner (0-1-3) and Paul Gilligan (0-1-1) saddled the 2nd and 3rd last year.

Noel Meade (0-0-11) has not had much luck in this, with his 11 runners since 2003 finishing unplaced.

                Running Style

                3 of 10 winners led/made all

3 of 10 winners tracked leaders

3 of 10 winners were settled in mid-division

1 of 10 winners were held up towards rear

                Price

No strong trends on the prices with 5 of the last 6 winners have gone off between 10/1 & 20/1 while the previous 4 winners all went off 8/1 or shorter.

Favourites (2-5-11) have gained just 2 wins in the past decade, giving a level stakes loss of 3.42.

                Summary:

Based on the trends from the past 10 years you are looking for a horse:

                · Aged 7 to 9

                · Carrying 10-9 or less (or placed in last year’s race)

                · Officially rated 125 or higher

                · Run since Christmas (ideally at Limerick or Leopardstown Festivals)

                · Won or placed on one or both of last 2 starts

                    Irish Racing Preview

I put a ring around nine names when having a look at this last week and five of them remain in the final field, namely Bishopsfurze, Son Amix, Sole Witness, The Westener Boy and TOON RIVER. Firstly, seeing as Bishopsfurze is locally owned and trained, this likely has been in mind for some time. Can he concede weight all round though – it's a tough ask and he hardly represents much in the way of value from a betting point of view. Son Amix had been touted by some good judges for the Paddy Power, and after being forced to miss that big-money Christmas event, the grey comes here with a solid chance. I certainly wouldn't put anyone off investing in this fellow each-way. The Westener Boy, like Son Amix, makes his handicap bow now and he has a massive chance with Tony McCoy in the plate. It'll be mightily interesting to see how he goes in the betting. Sole Witness was good at Navan last time and he'll justifiably have plenty of followers with local lad Ben Dalton in the plate. Wily old fox, David Casey is no stranger to winning this south eastern highlight with successes on On His Own, Hedgehunter and This Is Serious already under his belt and the County Waterford native could make his presence felt in his neighbouring county again, aboard Toon River. Plenty of horses have triumphed in this exciting spectacle in the past, that had shown a liking for Gowran before that, and Toon River certainly has that string to his bow. In two visits here he's won a maiden hurdle and finished second to the very classy Aupcharlie. The prominent racer can give his backers – at fancy odds – a good run for their money.

                      Timeform 1-2-3:
                      1. Panther Claw
                      2. Outlaw Pete
                      3. Bishopsfurze

Timeform Verdict: Panther Claw boasts an upwardly mobile profile as a staying chaser and gets the nod in what is another competitive renewal of this valuable handicap. Outlaw Pete is in the form of his life and looks a big threat, whilst Bishopsfurze would have to go close if putting in a clear round. Son Amix looks to have been laid out for this and could go well at a bigger price.

Colin McBratney feels Sole Witness has plenty in his favour when he goes for the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park today.

The County Down trainer has had this race in mind for the nine-year-old since he landed a two-and-a-half-mile handicap chase at Navan in mid-December.

"He won nicely in Navan. The plan was to go here after then and we’re very happy with him," said McBratney.

"He’ll love the ground and the distance shouldn’t be a problem. The weights have gone up a bit which is a bit of an inconvenience, but Ben Dalton takes 5lb off him. He knows him well which will help things.

"He won with 11st 6lb the last time so he can cope with it OK."

Willie Mullins expects Bishopsfurze to revel in the heavy conditions, but is less confident after his runner was left to give weight all round after the weights went up 9lb at the final declaration stage.

"He’ll love the ground but he’s got a lot of weight. It’s going to be a tough task with that amount of weight," said the County Carlow trainer.

Colm Murphy admits The Westener Boy faces a tough task in his first handicap.

The Westener Boy was pulled up at Leopardstown last time but had opened his account over the bigger obstacles by 25 lengths on his previous start.

"Touch wood, hopefully he runs well. We are probably throwing him in at the deep end first time in a handicap. We are well aware of that," said County Wexford trainer.

"He seems all right. We were a bit worried initially after he was pulled up at Leopardstown."

Tarquinius has plenty on his plate this afternoon, according to his trainer Gordon Elliott

"It’s a big step up in class and he’s gone up a lot in the weights, but if he could sneak into a place I’d be delighted," said the County Meath handler.

Bog Warrior meanwhile has an opportunity to pick up another decent prize over the small obstacles when he faces just four rivals in the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle.

The Tony Martin-trained nine-year-old was won both his races since being switched to hurdles after falling in the Ladbrokes Chase at Down Royal in November.

He was a Grade One novice chase winner last winter, and showed he is also a smart performer over timber when beating the high-class Solwhit at Punchestown on his latest start.

"He runs tomorrow and we will see where we go after that," said Eddie O’Leary, racing manager to owners Gigginstown House Stud.

"This is a good opportunity and we will see how he goes before we make future plans."

Tullintain can collar the Bishop in Thyestes

Willie Mullins relies solely on the top-weighted Bishopsfurze in his quest for a record-equalling fifth triumph in today's Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park.

Although it is a competitive edition of the prestigious three-mile handicap with a maximum field of 18 due to start, on paper it is one of the weaker renewals in recent years. Bishopsfurze's rating of 138 is the lowest to merit the top spot since 2006.

As such, despite a burden of 11st 7lb, the unexposed eight-year-old may have a big say under Ruby Walsh, who still seeks his first victory in the €80,000 event.

Twice a winner over fences as a novice, including in the sort of testing going he will get here, Bishopsfurze scored in game style on his seasonal bow over hurdles at Thurles.

He will be spot-on for this now, but the suspicion is that he might lack the class to give weight away all round. John Halley's Outlaw Pete, which ran out at the last fence in the Cork National when bang in contention, could have as little as 9st 9lb to carry if the trainer's son Josh can claim his full 7lb allowance.

A cross-country winner at Cheltenham in December, the JP McManus-owned nine-year-old relishes a stamina test. Gordon Elliott's Davy Condon-ridden Tarquinius falls into a similar bracket, but may be on the wrong side of the handicapper by now.

                            steering

Off 10st 6lb, which precludes Davy Russell from doing the steering, Paul Nolan's Gigginstown Stud-owned Panther Claw, a dour recent winner at Punchestown, is an improver worth considering.

Toon River, representing Mary Louise Hallahan and last year's successful rider David Casey, is another novice that appeals, but the 2012 runner-up Tullintain gets the nod for the win. Last term, Robert Tyner's 10-year-old was second to Seabass at Limerick prior to this, and he filled the same spot in the same race this time.

Harpsy Cord would have won that day had he not fallen at the last fence, when he hampered Tullintain into the bargain. That may have cost Tullintain the win but, either way, it was a fine prep over what was an inadequate two-and-a-half-mile trip.

In 2012, only On His Own, which turned out to be in a different league, bettered the staying-on Tullintain here. Off just a 2lb higher mark now for 10st 8lb, and with first-time blinkers and conditions to suit, Tyner's charge looks primed to go one better in the absence of anything as remotely precocious as last year's hero.

Should Tullintain prevail, Tralee native Philip Enright would match Casey's three wins in the race following back-to-back triumphs on Preist's Leap in 2008 and 2009.

Tyner's shrewd Kinsale stable might also take the bumper with Kandinski, while Bog Warrior is napped to account for Zaidpour in the Grade Two Galmoy Hurdle.

                              Jadanli wins the Thyestes
Jadanli just held on in a driving finish to the Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park this afternoon.

An action packed feature event turned into a duel in the closing stages as Jadanli clung on grimly from a last gasp lunge by Tarquinius in the €80,000 contest.

Paul Gilligan's charge was hitting the headlines again having been a Grade One winner as a novice when landing the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in 2010.

The 11-year-old was sent off a 25/1 shot today having been pulled up in the Welsh National on his last outing.

Andrew Lynch got a great tune from his mount as he travelled sweetly into contention before the home turn.

He hit the front approaching the third last and was pressed by Tarquinius, who pecked on landing.

Gordon Elliott's charge, also sent off at 25/1, looked booked for second heading to the last but knuckled down gamely on the run-in and just failed by a head to grab the spoils.

It was a welcome big race win for Galway handler Gilligan who admitted afterwards that his stable had been through some rough times.

“He's run 29 times and been in the money 18. His run in the Welsh National was absolutely super. I think better fancied horses than him pulled up before him. He deserved a win,” said the trainer, who handles the gelding for his father Eamon.

“He'll get an entry for the Irish National and I'll aim him towards that more so than Aintree. He'll also be entered there but the ground might be too good for him.

“We've had a rough time of it but it's a game that me, my wife Natalie and the kids love.

“We had some very good owners but also some bad ones and thankfully the very good ones have stuck with us through the years and I can't thank them enough.”

The Westener Boy was the gamble of the race, backed from 10/1 in the morning, and sent of 4/1 joint favourite. He was an early casualty under Tony McCoy while the other market leader Outlaw Pete (also owned by JP McManus) was never involved in a moderate sixth.
