There was disagreement over Far West's performance in the opener at Cheltenham.

Nicholls' hopeful made it three wins out of three in the JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial with a comfortable win after being sent off at 2/9.

But while William Hill and Coral saw fit to cut their Triumph Hurdle price to 6/1, both Ladbrokes and Betfred/totesport left their price unchanged at 10/1.

Kashmir Peak was also cut - into a best of 20s - after a win at Doncaster.

Irish Saint skipped 18 lengths clear of his rivals, headed by McVicar, to make a winning British debut in the William Hill - iPad App Now Available Juvenile Hurdle.

Sent off the 10/11 favourite to follow up his victory on his only previous appearance in France, Irish Saint earned a 14/1 quote with Sky Bet for the Triumph Hurdle.

"He's a horse I want to look after as we view him as a chaser but he deserves a chance to go for something better now," said Nicholls.

"I suppose he could come out again at the end of January at either Cheltenham or Haydock."

However the reigning champion trainer stressed that he still has other bullets still to fire with well over two months still to go before the Triumph.

"At the moment, Far West is very much my number one, but there are others still to come out, a couple of ex-Flat horses and another horse from France called Caid du Berlais," he said. "He would have run at Chepstow on Welsh National day in the Finale and might wait for the rescheduled meeting there in a week's time."

Kashmir Peak is Quinn's hope for the Triumph this spring after the former Ger Lyons inmate has shown his aptitude for jumps with solid victories at Market Rasen and Doncaster.

The trainer is also looking to give him another run ahead of the juvenile championship.

"He's in good fettle. He might go for the Trial race at Musselburgh early in February and there's a race in Leopardstown that month as well," said Quinn.

CAID DU BERLAIS LOOKS A SOLID TRIUMPH PROSPECT

The Grade 1 Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow was a bit of a mess. Swynmor failed to rise and capsized on landing after leading and looking sure to win at the last. He fell right underneath the pursuing Megalypos and brought that one to a standstill, leaving RUACANA (38) to win.

My impression from replaying the video several times is that Ruacana still had a fair bit of run left in him whereas Megalypos was beginning to tire. So I reckon he'd have finished second by a length, perhaps less but for the melee at the last.

Ruacana has now won both his hurdles starts and was a decent performer on the flat. However he was the smallest horse in the line up and doesn't look likely to be suited to the rough and tumble of the Triumph Hurdle. So, fast as he is, I'd be inclined to favour him for Aintree rather than Cheltenham.

If there was a Triumph Hurdle winner in the line up I reckon it was the runner up CAID DU BERLAIS (38).

Caid Du Berlais was a useful performer over fixed brush hurdles in France. On his final outing over there he got outpaced as the initially slow gallop picked up in the backstraight at Auteuil but worked his way back into contention to challenge at the last before the winner did him for a turn of foot. The third went on to win G2 and G1 events on his subsequent two starts, so it was clearly a red hot contest.

At Chepstow the early pace was strong but Caid Du Berlais was cutting back nearly a quarter of a mile in distance and switching from fixed brush hurdles which are basically baby fences. So it's not that surprising he had to be niggled along to keep up while racing in last until entering the straight. From there he began to make up ground. He ballooned three out, as horses switching from bigger jumps are apt to do (he'd jumped a bit big at the second and third too). But he picked up really strongly from the last and was closing the gap quite rapidly on the winner close home.

If he'd been used to jumping standard British hurdles I think Caid Du Berlais would have won this.

Caid Du Berlais is a strong, classy looking sort that has the build of a two and a half or three mile steeplechaser. His connections now face the choice of sticking to juvenile hurdles and going for the Triumph or stepping him up to two and a half miles, which will involve taking on older horses.

If he were mine I'd be going the Triumph route with Caid Du Berlais in the hope that the stiff uphill finish at Cheltenham will bring his stamina into play. I think the 33-1 the bookies are offering about him for that race is way too big.

SWYNMOR (38) would almost certainly have won had he stood up. He'd hosed up at Newbury on his only previous hurdles start and is clearly one of the best juvenile hurdlers. However I want to see him prove his trainer's assertion that he can handle faster ground. The fact that he turned in his worst performance by far the one time he encountered a quick surface has me concerned about his prospects for the Spring Festivals.

What’s better than having one live prospect for the Triumph Hurdle? Having two – or even three – is the obvious answer.

Norton trainer John Quinn is now in that enviable position after Hidden Justice had displayed his burgeoning talents on his hurdling debut at Wetherby’s Christmas meeting and Cockney Sparrow had won by 27 lengths last Saturday at Doncaster.

A couple of weeks earlier, stable companion Kashmir Peak had proved himself one of the best juvenile hurdlers in the country with a Grade 2 success at the same track, showcasing his Triumph Hurdle chances.

Quinn is the first to acknowledge that “we’ve got a good bunch this year,” as he heads into 2013 with an enviable group of young hurdlers, an area in which the Highfield handler has few peers.

While Countrywide Flame, Quinn’s 2012 Triumph Hurdle winner, may not have enhanced his Champion Hurdle claims when a beaten favourite in Kempton’s Christmas Hurdle, the lack of an end-to-end gallop in that Grade 1 contest counted firmly against him.

None the worse for his fourth-placed effort behind Darlan, Countrywide Flame, previously a wide-margin winner of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, will aim to bounce back to winning form before a return to the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The clear signs are that he will have some company on his journey to Gloucestershire. While Kashmir Peak appears to have booked his Triumph Hurdle place, Hidden Justice planted a marker at Wetherby with a professional display on his hurdling bow.

Making light of the heavy ground, the three-year-old, bought for 30,000gns at Newmarket’s October Sales after failing to win in 10 starts on the Flat on turf and with one win to his credit from two all-weather outings, forged clear to win by 15 lengths under Dougie Costello.

“We liked him, but we did think we were starting him off in a hot race,” said Quinn, after the 10-1 success. “We’ll get him out again in about three weeks under a penalty and then see where we go. He’ll be entered in the Triumph Hurdle, and because he revelled in the ground, we’ve got one for soft and one for good ground now.”

Cockney Sparrow, a former Peter Chapple-Hyam Flat-racer with two wins on the level, cost 35,000gns at the same Newmarket Sales where Hidden Justice was recruited.

A creditable runner-up on her hurdling bow at Aintree, the daughter of Cockney Rebel had little to beat at Doncaster and was sent off the 1-3 favourite, but she could hardly have scored with more authority, making all the running under Costello and cruising home by a wide margin.

“She ran a great race at Aintree but had never encountered heavy ground before,” recalled Quinn. “She has come on for that run. We bought her with mares’ races in mind, but she’ll also be entered in the Triumph.”

One more outing will also earn her a rating for the Fred Winter Novices’ Hurdle, a handicap.

Friday – Triumph Hurdle: SURE REEF (40/1, Stan James, William Hill)

Easily the most speculative of my five picks, Sure Reef has yet to even jump a hurdle in public so is clearly not one for anything other than small stakes.

However he was a highly progressive type on the level last year, scoring three times for Michael Halford, and has now joined the most powerful national hunt yard in the country after changing hands for 150,000 guineas in November.

Willie Mullins already has a couple of strong contenders for the Triumph but if this fellow were to appear in the near future and win impressively I could easily see him becoming the stable’s number one hope.

                      Timeform ...

Diakali looked yet another exciting prospect from the Willie Mullins yard, putting himself firmly in contention for the Triumph Hurdle with a facile success in the Grade 3 juvenile at Punchestown on Saturday, making all and in command a long way out when beating Flaxen Flare by 28 lengths. He's open to further improvement, though his form isn't the easiest to pin down and current ante-post prices of around 8/1 for the Triumph make little appeal at this stage. * * * * * *

                        On Saturdays trial

And another interesting horse ready to make their debut for the Henderson team, Rolling Star. The winner of his only start over hurdles in France, he has been nibbled at in the ante-post betting for the Triumph but the strength of that Auteuil form is open to question. He's 12/1 with Sky Bet for the Festival but could easily be twice those odds if he fails to make a winning debut.

A good run from Roc D'Apsis wouldn't come as a surprise with Tom George in such fine form, but it would also be a boost for Triumph favourite Far West who had him comfortably in his wake last time out. However Far West's trainer still has other bullets to fire for the Triumph and two of them, Sametegal and Irish Saint are both possible runners here.

However, John Quinn's northern raider Hidden Justice shouldn't be ruled out of a big run. He travelled well and jumped tidily to win at Doncaster on his first start for the stable and wasn't a bad sort on the Flat for Amanda Perrett - probably at least the equal of any of these in that sphere.

The JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial will give me the first chance in public on ROLLING STAR (12.10) who won his only hurdle in France.

He’s been pleasing the Seven Barrows team and although I only gave him a light spin up the all-weather gallop last week, he gave me a very pleasant feel.

This is a serious trial, though, and I have plenty of respect for another ex-Frenchman, Irish Saint, who couldn’t have been any more impressive when he won at Kempton over Christmas.

To my mind it will between the pair of us and I’m going into this with a positive view for the future because this will be my lad’s first run since October and he’s sure to improve.

I was tickled by Paul Nicholls' insistence that Irish Saint was more of a long-term chasing prospect than Rolling Star after his defeat in the opening Triumph Hurdle Trial. My moles tell me that Nicholls had been remarkably bullish about his horse's chances before racing in the Timeform hospitality suite - perhaps accounting for the solid market support behind Irish Saint in the final minutes before the race.

This might well have been very decent form and I wouldn't be in a rush - as Nicholls seemed to be - to play it down. But Rolling Star probably wants more cut in the ground than he will get back at the Festival in six weeks' time.
