Ryanair Chase 2012
Thu, Mar 15th, 2012

Riverside Theatre was given an inspired ride by Barry Geraghty to deny the gallant Albertas Run a fourth Cheltenham Festival victory. Medermit ran well in third and is likely to be targeted at the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Our pre race musings are below :

We have added a listing of entries ranked by official rating to our Ryanair Chase guide and are more confused than ever. The thirteen top rated horses are split by just six pounds on official rating. Tony McCoy has won this on Albertas Run for the past two seasons can he get the hat trick up ? It looked doubtful earlier in the season when Albertas picked up an injury but it seems he is now back on track. Riverside Theatre and Somersby have both put in eyecatching winning performances at Ascot and Rubi Light looks like the best of the Irish. Noble Prince won the novice equivalent of this race in 2011 and looks like the back up for the Champion Jockey if Albertas doesn't make it.

Starting Price: Only one favourite has won since the race was introduced in 2005. Four of the six beaten favourites had won agrade 1 chase on their previous start. Don't stray too far from the top of the betting though. The winner has come from the first three in the betting in all but one renewal.

Last Run: 5 of the 7 winners won or were placed on their prep run. The last 4 winners ran (we are tempted to say poorly) in the King George VI Chase at Kempton. Previous Cheltenham form is a big plus - all seven winners ( and five of the runners up) have previously won on the course.

Age: 9 and 10 year olds have won 5 from 7.

Jockeys/ Trainers : Ruby Walsh/ Paul Nicholls and AP McCoy/Johnjo O'Neill have each won the race twice. Irish trained horses are 0-19 in the race.

Ryanair Chase 2012 Jockey Tips

Four leading National hunt jockeys, Barry Geraghty, Jason Maguire, Richard Johnson and Choc Thornton are taking the Cheltenham Festival Tips challenge. We expect Barry to ride Riverside Theatre in this race. Last years Arkle winner Captain Chris has an entry and could be Richard Johnson's mount but is more likely to head to the Gold Cup. If Wishful Thinking also heads to the Queen Mother Champion Chase we dont see an obvious ride for Richard. Medermit is the only Alan King entry and recent betting moves suggest this will be the target rather than the Gold Cup. It looks like Jason will also be on the lookout for a spare ride.
