Here are are pre race comments :

Choc Thornton won this last year on Bensalem and has three wins in this race in the last decade. Have Choc and Alan King got this years races sorted too ? Hold on Julio heads the betting. December meeting winner Quantatitiveeasing and are The Package next two in the betting.

Choc is one of the  four top jockeys taking the Fat Jockey Cheltenham Festival Tips challenge. With almost sixty Cheltenham Festival winners between them and the inside track on four of the leading yards in England, we expect Barry Geraghty, Jason Maguire, Richard Johnson and Choc Thornton to be tipping winners. To check free jockey tips for this race and other races on Champion Hurdle Day click here

Barry Geraghty rides Mossley and told his ATR blog:

MOSSLEY needs to get his jumping right to have a chance in the JLT Speciality Handicap Chase (2.40) because that's what's been letting him down of late. If the session he had recently with Yogi Breisner has sorted him out than I expect a forward showing in a very tough race. I am sure that once he gets it together he is well capable of taking a race of this calibre. The pace and trip are fine, the jumping is the thing and if that's ok then it wouldn't be the shock of the season for him to run a big one. Hold On Julio is definitely the one to beat for all of us. Alan King's horse won well at Sandown the last two outings and there could still be mileage in his mark of 145. Quantitativeesing has class but a rating to go with it and I'm interested in The Package despite the long layoff.

Tony McCoy writing in the Telegraph commented on his mount Quantitativeeasing :

I am hopeful Quantitativeeasing (2.40) can run a big race despite being burdened with top weight in the JLT Specialty Chase. The last horse to win it off that mark was Charter Party the year before he won the Gold Cup. He was second in the Paddy Power here in November and won the Spinal Research three weeks later. He loves the place and the trip will be fine and even with the weight he should finish in the top three. The Package and Hold On Julio, though his inexperience showed a bit at Sandown, are the main dangers.

Starting Price  8 of the last ten winners have come from the first four in the betting but just one favourite has won. Favourites have finished 6 3/0 8 9 P 2/3/6 3 1 2 F in the last decade.

Last Run: 6 out of last 10 winners have won last time out with only one winner (Joes Edge at 50/1 in 2007) out of the first three. 7 of the last ten winners has a run within seven weeks of the race. Previous festival form is a plus. 7 of the last 14 winners had previously finished in the first four at the festival.

Ratings and Weights: 9 of the last ten winners carried less than 11 stone. Last years winner Bensalem was the exception. The last four winners have been rated 142 or 143. The last ten winners feel into a 129-143 ratings band. The last 150+ rated horse to win was Scot Lane in 1983.

Trainers/ Jockeys:  Paul Nicholls has a poor record in the race with just two places and no wins from fifteen runners. On the other hand, Alan King/ Choc Thornton do well in this. King has had two wins and one place in the last seven years. Choc has won it three times in that period. Nicky Henderson runners should be respected. In the last decade he has had one winner and five places from eleven runners.
